In this review, we have made a selection of both types of these vehicles, so no matter what you are looking for, you will find it here.

Subcompact class

#1 Honda HR-V

The 2017 Honda XP-B is one of the top contenders for the best in class. What does she have for this? For those who have just moved from a car, there is plenty of trunk space, despite the car's size, thanks to the "Magic Seats" that fold down. There's also plenty of room for four tall passengers, something you won't find in this class. We wished for a simpler technical interface, but overall the HR-V is a very comfortable passenger car with more space than the average subcompact sedan.

#2 Mazda CX-3

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 is one of the most attractive, fun to drive and sporty cars in its class. It is smaller than other leading compacts, which means its space is very limited. But, if you are considering driving pleasure, then this is the best choice. The CX-3 also features one of the best interiors in the class, with superb seats, high quality materials and an easy-to-use infotainment system parodying those of more expensive cars like Audi and BMW.

#3 Subaru Crosstrek (Subaru XV)

Frame SUVs are usually the only cross-country, "go anywhere" cars, but some small crossovers like this 2017 Subaru Crosstrack are resisting the trend. It's basically an Impreza hatchback with extra ground clearance, different tires and some styling upgrades. The Crosstrek offers some level of off-roading without the downside of compromising fuel economy. And while the Subaru Crosstrek isn't the fastest car in its class, it still has adequate power for city use and modest fuel consumption.

Class Compact

#4 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-B is one of the smoothest, most streamlined cars in its class, and perhaps one of the best on the market today. The CR-V has plenty of room, offers excellent fuel economy (especially with the optional 1.5-litre turbo), and is relatively fast. Honda offers it at a very competitive price, so you'll likely find it fits within your budget. The car may not be the most delightful or sporty in its segment, but when it comes to comfort, quality and price, this is by far the best representative.

#5 Mazda CX-5

Since the old Mazda CX-5 was our favorite, it came as no surprise that the new, improved, redesigned CX-5 was also our choice. With its interior and driving dynamics that mimic luxury cars, the Mazda CX-5 feels like it's worth a lot more than it actually is. Add to that the fact that it's still a very economical, family-friendly crossover with plenty of space and modern technology in the interior, and you have a class-leading compact.

#6 Ford Escape

The 2017 Ford Escape is a strong all-rounder offering a wide range of options to meet the needs of different buyers. There are turbo engines, plenty of trunk space, and a much-improved technology interface with the latest infotainment software from Ford. Like its closest rival, the Mazda CX-5, the Getaway feels sporty to drive, more like a car than an SUV. Whether you choose an entry-level car or a loaded version with all the bells and whistles, the Ford Escape is worth considering.

#7 Subaru Forester

If you're looking for something basic to haul and want to avoid a lot of unnecessary bling, then the 2017 Subaru Forester is a great choice. It has a fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine, standard (base) all-wheel drive and solid reliability figures. The Forester also has many great technology and safety options available, such as lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert (sideway monitoring when reversing).

Midsize class 2-row

#8 2017 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge offers buyers a little of everything with its comfortable ride, ample cabin space and optional performance-oriented engines. The base motor is attractive for its solid economy, and the optional motors produce impressive power. The latest tech UI updates have also given Edge all the chips you could possibly need in this mid-sized class.

#9 Kia Sorento

The 2017 Kia Sorento is a good example of why we love midsizes so much. It has many technological features and all the necessary space that family trips may need. The Sorento is available with two or three rows of seats, so you can accommodate up to 7 passengers. A sleek, sleek design and comfortable seats add to the Sorento's appeal, and the car comes standard (in all trims) with an excellent warranty.

#10 Nissan Murano

This unique midsize crossover is distinguished by its eye-catching exterior design, high-tech interior and class-leading front seats. It also delivers solid performance, making it feel smaller than it actually is while driving. But don't worry, there's plenty of room in the back seat for adults or even the largest child seats, although the boot isn't as spacious as the Ford Edge.

Midsize class 3-row

#11 Honda Pilot

The 2017 Honda Pilot has made a lot of improvements since the debut of the first generation. Now it delivers one of the best combinations of performance, applicability and technology. The Pilot is comfortable on the road, mellow on rough city streets and well made, both inside and out. For those drivers who want to get rid of the minivan but still need three rows of seats, the Pilot will offer intelligent space solutions, state-of-the-art technology and impressive class-leading fuel efficiency. The Honda Pilot can even carry up to 2.2 tons of weight with the right equipment, making it a great alternative to bulky frame SUVs.

#12 Toyota Highlander

The 2017 Toyota Highlander has been one of the best cars in its class for some time, and for a lot of reasons. Not only does it offer an optional 3.5-liter V6 that's powerful and fuel-efficient, but a hybrid model is also available, which is a rarity in the class. The Highlander is capable of pulling up to 2.2 tons of cargo when properly equipped, and has an above-average cargo hold. The Toyota Highlander also has pleasantly heavy handling and near-luxury comfort levels in the interior.

#13 Mazda CX-9

One of the coolest looking and most modified cars in recent memory, the Mazda CX-9 has an unrivaled combination of size, style and class. She's big but agile. It's powerful yet fuel-efficient. It seems expensive, but the price is still not in the luxury stratosphere. And while 2,040 liters of trunk space isn't the most you'll find in the class, the CX-9's comfortable cargo area is respectable, and fuel economy (as well as actual performance) is impressive. It's a 3-row driver's crossover, so to speak, just what we love and expect from Mazda.

Full Size Class

#14 Ford Expedition

There has been a big shift in the world of SUVs over the past few years, and it has been far from big, frame-based, truck-based family tractors. Crossovers with soft and smooth suspension are more common today. Despite this shift, the Ford Expedition has evolved to create a strong three-row SUV with truck-like traction and a serious road presence. The 2017 Ford Expedition has some of the softest and smoothest suspension in the segment, and there's more than enough room for adults in the third row of seats. And while fuel economy isn't as impressive, the Expedition is able to squeeze decent fuel consumption figures out of its turbo V6 - 13mpg mixed style. Add to this a maximum thrust rating of over 4 tons, and you have an impressive family machine.

Class Off Road

#15 Toyota Land Cruiser

Sometimes you may need an off-road vehicle with a very specific skill set, just taking your family to and from training will not be enough. This is where an off-road athlete like the Toyota Land Cruiser comes into play. Full-time all-wheel drive, ground clearance that puts most pickup trucks to shame, and Toyota's advanced KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System) make the Kruzak eminently off-road capable. Superb ride quality, a strong V8 and a simple, clean interior layout must be what makes this SUV more appealing to many than just off-road hangouts. Sure, you can own a Land Cruiser and never go off-road. Also you can own it and never drive on the road. This is the beauty of this car with smooth lines of the body.

#16 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeep has been making off-road vehicles for what seems like forever. And, of course, the comfortable, family-run Grand Cherokee is unlikely to be its most off-road model, but it can go far beyond most of its brethren—especially in the Trailhawk trim that debuted in 2017. More than just an SUV, the Grand Cherokee is quiet, almost luxurious inside, and extremely good at touring. Three powerplants are also available here to choose from, which should help when it's dragging something or just making more noise from your driving.

#17 Jeep Wrangler

There aren't many cars left on the planet that are as focused as the 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The Wrangler has two main objectives that it has served for decades: get as far off-road as possible and have a convertible roof. Everything else is secondary. This is not a comfortable, luxurious, well-finished family car. It's just an SUV that wants to go where no one else can. Overall finesse obviously suffers as a result, but that's part of what gives the Wrangler its charm. He doesn't care about backseat DVD players or massage seats. He'd rather pop the roof off and take a ride through the woods, which is probably what you want if you're eyeing a Wrangler. And that's why he's still our favorite.

#18 Toyota 4Runner

With off-road options and lots of useful features no matter where you take it, the Toyota 4Runner is a class leader. Huge ground clearance will get you through rocks and ruts, while the KDSS suspension system and available low-range transfer case can digest any road surface you throw at them. The forrunner is relatively capable and, as a tractor, too, can pull up to 2.2 tons. There are several 4Runner trims available for urban use, but we recommend one of the TRD models to get you off the beaten path.

Luxury Compact

#19 Acura RDX

If you're looking for a luxurious vibe without the teary price premium, then the Acura RDH is a great place to start. The richest RDX trims tend to compete with other luxury crossovers in their base trims without sacrificing comfort or mannerisms. The cabin is big enough for adults to sit comfortably in the back, and the standard V6 combines class-leading acceleration with ample fuel economy. All the luxury equipment you'd expect to find in this class is available from the RDH, and it's one of the easiest cars to drive, thanks to its size.

#20 BMW X3

Some SUV buyers expect their cars to feel massive to drive, but the BMW X3 feels more like a sports sedan than an SUV. Add to that a spacious and well-executed cabin and you have a winning recipe. The X3 is a tad overpriced than some of its similarly-equipped rivals, but if you want something that feels special no matter how you drive it, then the X3 is worth the money.

#21 Audi Q5

While it may not be particularly flashy or flashy on the outside, the 2017 Audi Q5 definitely has the right equipment where it counts. The base 4-cylinder turbo engine has enough power to keep it competitive in the class, while the optional V6 offers a bit more efficiency. The interior is assembled with top-of-the-line materials, with the sliding rear seat being a unique feature in the class. And the sporty nature of driving means you don't have to sacrifice practicality for pleasure.

#22 Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class

One of the newest vehicles in the segment, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC is a solid performer across the board. The cabin has plenty of room for adults, both front and rear. Style and finish meet all the criteria for luxury, and the standard 4-cylinder engine is one of the best in the class for acceleration and fuel economy. The available AMG model raises the bar with a turbo V6, and the all-wheel drive offered on all models means you can find the GLC suitable for any climate. The GLC doesn't skimp on options either - you can get them of every sort, from a 14-speaker Burmester audio system to surround view cameras.

#23 Porsche Macan

The 2017 Porsche Macan is probably one of the best handling SUVs on the market today. Porsche took the virtues of flamboyant handling and applied them to the small crossover class. Everything about the Macan's interior feels like it's been borrowed from the long, illustrious history of machines like the 911 Carrera, and you can take your bike with you if you fold down the rear seats. With its rounded design and compact size, the Macan is a bit limited overall in terms of cargo capacity, but if you're looking for a driver's car in this segment, then this is it.

Lux Midsize

#24 Acura MDX

Like the smaller RDH, the 2017 Acura MDX is a luxury SUV without the hefty price tag. The Acura MDX offers three rows of seats, all of which are comfortable and spacious, but be aware that the cargo area is very average. Excellent safety ratings, a quiet cabin, a smooth ride and impressive fuel economy round out the MDX's long list of practical virtues, but for a car this big, it's also very sporty.

#25 Audi Q7

No question, the updated 2017 Audi Q7 is one of our top recommendations in the class. Superb quality finishes and selection of materials make the interior inviting from the moment you step into the car, while the supremely quiet interior on the highway ensures it's a great long-distance car. The Q7 comes standard with a turbo 4-cylinder engine, but we recommend getting a better one - a charged V6 that accelerates the Q7 from zero to hundreds in 6 seconds - an impressive figure for this class. The V6 also increases the maximum thrust from 2 tons to 3.5 tons, which is definitely strong.

#26 BMW X5

BMW X5 2017 model year is one of the most expensive cars in the class, and its trunk volume is less than that of the class leaders. However, we still think it's worth it to be here. Here you can choose from several different engines, including a turbo six, turbo V8, six-cylinder diesel, and even a plug-in hybrid with the ability to travel 22 km on electric power alone. As you'd expect from a BMW, there's plenty of high-tech equipment available here, such as a night vision camera system and 4-zone climate control. The X5 also comes with four years of free standard service and enough standard options to satisfy just about any driver.

#27 Porsche Cayenne

Due to its hefty size, the 2017 Porsche Cayenne may seem too big to be sporty or nimble. But, don't be fooled by this big German SUV. It's really impressive - both in a straight line and in corners. Whether you're riding a standard V6 turbo or a powerful V8 turbo, the Cayenne has more than enough fire to satisfy anyone with a heavy right foot. Whether you're aiming for the city, or trying to get out of the city, or heading for a ride through the hills, the Cayenne remains easy to drive. All the luxury features are in order too, with exquisitely crafted interiors and comfortable enough seats for any long journey.

#28 Volvo XC90

With style and sophistication throughout, the 2017 Volvo XZ90 is unique in looks and superb in motion. A common theme among our top recommendations in this class is that the XC90 drives like a car that's much smaller, and it has an affordable plug-in hybrid version—two things that give it a wide range of appeal. The second and third rows of seats have plenty of room, and as expected from a Volvo, it has the best safety ratings, including an Excellent score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety due to its frontal collision avoidance system. The XC90 doesn't accelerate as fast as some of the competition and doesn't have the noise isolation of the class leaders, but it still has a lot to offer and sits high on our list.

Luxury Fullsize and Flagships

#29 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class

Formerly known as the GL, the 2017 Mercedes GLS is as big as you can get from Mercedes (cargo vans don't count). The GLS has plenty of adult space in all three rows of seats, and there's no shortage of affordable luxury equipment here. If you fold the second and third rows of seats in the GLS, then in total there will be a terrible 2650 liters under the cargo compartment, which is competitive even in this segment. Notable options include automatic parallel parking, ventilated front seats, adaptive suspension and even a dual-range transfer case for some extra off-road prowess. And no Mercedes is truly complete as long as it has a performance-oriented AMG variant, so the GLS offers the AMG GLS 63, which comes with a 5.5-liter V8 and 577bhp.

#30 Land Rover Range Rover

One of the most iconic luxury SUVs on the market, the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover combines extreme off-road capability with a rich interior. Even if he lived his entire life in the city, the Range Rover would be impressive based solely on its smooth 8-speed transmission, quiet cabin and impeccable finishes. But no Range Rover should be demoted solely for city driving. This top-of-the-line SUV can also tackle tough trails thanks to its intelligent road response system and plenty of ground clearance to get through big rocks.

Crossovers were created as cars for city driving and smooth asphalt roads. But sometimes you have to move off the well-worn and proven track. Especially for such cases - the rating of crossovers with enviable cross-country ability.

off-road crossover

The SUV, confidently behaving both on the city and on the country road, and beyond, is not at all a luxury for Russia. With such roads, you need to be sure that the car will go around the traffic jam on the side of the road or take the family to the campsite. The crossover is not a full-fledged SUV, in terms of a set of options it is far from SUVs, but not all of them are defenseless off-road. A cross-country vehicle with good cross-country ability should have the following characteristics:

  • · Four-wheel drive and suspension. On many models, it either doesn’t exist at all, or it’s almost decorative: the torque is distributed poorly, the connection of the second axle works with a delay, and there is no use for the adaptive suspension.
  • Clearance. If a car has less than 18 cm of ground clearance, it will be difficult for it even on city roads, to say nothing of the winter season and off-road.
  • · Powerful motor. The motor should pull, giving out the necessary traction even at low speeds.
  • · Reliability. The main components of the car must withstand a high load so as not to fail at an important moment.
  • Correct geometry. This item includes the angles of the exit and exit, the width of the wheels and the presence of protection of the main components.

The listed items are only the minimum set necessary for driving on bad roads or where there are no roads at all. Auto manufacturers add various additional options to their creations to conquer off-road, so the line between a crossover and a full-fledged SUV is becoming increasingly blurred.

Rating of crossovers by cross-country ability

A dozen crossovers that are least afraid of off-road and are distinguished by quality and a good price are as follows:

  • Suzuki Grand Vitara
  • · Nissan X-Tail;
  • · BMW X6;
  • · Toyota Higlander;
  • · Renault Duster;
  • · Land Rover Freelander;
  • Subaru Forester;
  • · Audi Q5;
  • · Toyota RAV4;
  • Mitsubishi Outlander.

Let's take a closer look at some particularly popular cars and briefly talk about the rest.

Suzuki Grand Vitara

They met this Japanese crossover in Russia twenty years ago. During this time, Vitara has become for many a model of an unpretentious, reliable and functional car.

The owners note the excellent handling of the Suzuki Grand Vitara, and the crossover steers pleasantly both on asphalt and beyond. Traditionally, it is available in three-door and full-size versions, both of which are equipped with all-wheel drive. For the shortened version, a standard 4x4 scheme is provided, the five-door car is equipped with an upgraded multifunctional transmission. It allows you to block the center differential and force a downshift.

The current generation Suzuki Grand Vitara has 195mm of ground clearance under the front axle and 215mm under the rear axle. In all trim levels, the car has all-wheel drive. So far, the manufacturer offers only 2 and 2.4-liter gasoline power units, delivering 140 and 169 horsepower, respectively. Engines are tuned, fuel consumption is one of the lowest in the class. The older engine consumes 9.7 liters of gasoline per 100 km with automatic transmission, 9 liters with mechanics. Junior - 8.4 liters with mechanics and 8.9 with an automatic in the combined cycle.

The car went through several restylings, but it retained its recognizable features and conservative design. There are still no bright details in the interior, it is quite ascetic and practical, without too much gloss. But with ergonomics and convenience, there is complete order here: the owners note that even long trips are easy on this car.

The crossover has been repeatedly recognized as one of the most reliable and safe in its class and price segment. The minimum cost with a manual transmission and a two-liter engine is $20,600. Already in the database there is a full power package, a multifunction steering wheel, an immobilizer, heated mirrors and airbags, including window blinds.

Nissan X-Trail

The designers of the Nissan X-Trail took into account the experience of the full-size Nissan Patrol SUV, so that the crossover feels quite comfortable on the roads. Unlike the Grand Vitara, Nissan looks much more thoughtful and stylish. The latest restyling made the car more modern: the lighting technology, false radiator grille and bumpers have changed. The changes also affected the interior space. The front seats have become even more comfortable, a few more adjustments have been added to the existing adjustments, the front panel has acquired a seven-inch screen.

With an off-road arsenal, there is also complete order. Ground clearance of 210 mm is complemented by all-wheel drive ALL Mode 4 × 4. It turns on in case of slipping or slipping of the wheels, by default only the front wheels are used. The distribution of torque occurs through the use of a friction clutch. There are three modes of operation: 2WD (with traction only on the front wheels), Auto and Lock, in which the clutches are blocked. The owners note that the automatic torque distribution system works almost flawlessly.

The line of power units offers two gasoline engines (2 and 2.5 liters for 144 and 171 hp) and a diesel engine for 1.6 liters and 130 horses. Gasoline engines are equipped with mechanics or a variator, but diesel engines are equipped with manual transmission only.

It consumes 5.3 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers in the combined cycle and pulls off the track much better than its counterparts.

The all-wheel drive Nissan X-Trail starts at $24,400. moreover, in addition to full power accessories, a multifunction steering wheel and airbags, there is also cruise control and an assistance system when starting uphill.

Renault Duster

Renault Duster survived the first restyling, it has freshened up and now looks much more expensive than its real value. The main advantage of the crossover is the price, which starts at $9650.

It is the most affordable on our list, but the price does not prevent it from having sufficient cross-country ability. Ground clearance of 20.5 cm, all-wheel drive and high-torque engines allow the Duster to overcome even small rivers. From the first generation, a solid suspension has remained here, which is quite problematic to break through even deliberately.

The owners say that even steep climbs do not frighten the updated crossover: Duster puffs up, but rides "like a small tank." In some cases, it is noted that the checkpoint is slowed down. It is not always possible to catch the right moment to shift gears, including on the mechanics. On the track, the car does not differ in enviable mechanics: it accelerates rather uncertainly, so you will have to deliberately overtake.
Renault Duster has improved sound insulation and appearance, but everything inside is still meager and boring. Needless to say, a budget-class car, which means there is a minimum of sophistication in it. But economical engines are installed here: petrol 1.6 and 2 liters (114 and 143 hp) and diesel 109 horses, which consumes 5.3 liters of fuel per hundred in the combined cycle. Gasoline engines consume 7.6 and 7.8 liters, respectively. The all-wheel-drive Duster costs $11,430, while the fully equipped one costs $16,070.

Audi Q5

The German crossover distinguishes itself from its competitors by its dynamics and excellent handling, which, together with its first-class design, makes Audi a good city car. However, he is not afraid to move off the intended path. Four-wheel drive, a clearance of 20 cm, adjusted motors and a mass of electronic assistants will allow you to drive with impunity where others fail.

There are no complaints about the appearance of the Q5: you can feel the work of designers and the thoughtfulness of every little thing. However, not all drivers are pleased with the seats: the front sports seats are too narrow, and the three of them are cramped in the back. Otherwise, there are no complaints about the crossover. Noise isolation, assembly, quality of finishing materials and ergonomics at a high level. The gearbox shifts at the right moment, Audi accelerates quickly, holds the trajectory well.

A significant plus for us is the engines. There are 6 types of engines to choose from: 3 petrol (2 liters, 180 hp; 2 liters, 225 hp; 3 liters, 272 hp), two diesel engines (2 liters, 177 hp). s.; 3 l., 245 hp) and even one hybrid for 245 horses. Even with a “weak” engine, the Audi accelerates to 100 in 8.5 seconds, so with such power, problems can be avoided even on forest roads. In addition to the traditional manual transmission and automatic transmission, we are offered a robotic gearbox. Already in the base there is cruise control, a start-stop system, heated front seats, automatic headlight range control and a lot of electronic assistants. This charm has one big minus: the price. The minimum cost of the Audi Q5 is $37,000, and with additional options, service and spare parts costs, the costs can be frightening. Even if you have enough money for this wonderful car with excellent off-road potential, you hardly want to muddy it on uncharted roads.

Briefly about the main

Having considered the bright representatives of off-road crossovers, let's say a few words about the rest of the cars from the rating.

bmw x6 with so many horses under the hood and torque, it will outperform many class competitors and even some SUVs off-road. It has the same minus as the Audi Q5 - the price, which starts at $62,800.

Toyota Higlander You can’t call an affordable crossover either ($43,930), but it is considered one of the most comfortable cars of the eminent Japanese manufacturer. You can frolic off-road due to the torque and power of the engines, but the geometry and overhangs spoil the pleasant experience.

Land Rover Freelander pleases owners with confident driving on country roads, convenience and thoughtful design. The sad thing is that the Terrain Response suspension adaptation system is inconvenient to use, and confident overtaking dynamics is only possible with top-end engines.

Subaru Forester is distinguished by its system of adaptation to the road surface - X-Mode. The crossover is capable of a lot, but the bulging exhaust pipe, which can easily be crushed, spoils the pleasant impression.
Toyota RAV4 is one of the most popular crossovers. It changes for the sake of time, becomes more modern and thoughtful, while maintaining reliability and build quality. The only sad thing is that with each restyling it becomes more of a city car.

Mitsubishi Outlander with the latest update, it has become more attractive in appearance, but its off-road component is slightly better than that of simple SUVs.

Outcome

Although crossovers are created for city roads, there are cars among them that are not afraid of moderate off-road. They are not full-fledged SUVs, but they are suitable for trips out of town, fishing or a picnic. The number of offers and the mass of trim levels will allow you to choose a crossover that is right for you.

Let's try to figure it out and find out which car is more suitable for city roads, and which one is for their absence. We have selected for you the ten most affordable crossovers and reviewed their characteristics.

Severe externally and internally UAZPATRIOT 2015

The new "Patriot" deservedly takes first place in our list of budget crossovers.

Let's start with the fact that this is the only frame SUV produced in Russia for the average layman.

Changes in the external and internal appearance

The updated PATRIOT has changed a lot in appearance:

  • The radiator grill has already become.
  • The headlights have acquired an elongated shape and improved optics.
  • Bumpers are now attached not to the frame structure, but directly to the body, which made it possible to reduce the gaps.
  • The side step does not protrude, but goes flush with the body, which does not underestimate the ground clearance, as it was before.

Inside the car is also prettier:

  • Instead of Korean "oak" seats, they put Russian ones.
  • There is much more information on the dashboard. The top version even has an on-board computer with navigation from NAVITEL.

As for the filling under the hood, everything is unchanged: a 2.7-liter gasoline engine and a 2.3-liter diesel engine. In the diesel version, a variant with a turbine from BOSCH is provided.

Let's upset fans of the machine - the Russian SUV is available only with a five-speed manual transmission.

The price for the economy option is approximately 8,300 euros.

What do you get for this money:

  • 5-speed manual transmission.
  • Two-stage razdatka with an electric drive.
  • Cardan (maintenance-free) shafts with increased resource.
  • Anti-roll bar (for rear suspension).
  • Bumpers, moldings and handles painted in body color.
  • Mirrors with repeaters, heated and electric.
  • Steering wheel height adjustment.
  • R16 iron rims.
  • Power steering.
  • Power windows for all windows.
  • 4 speakers, audio preparation. UAZ is popular because of its cross-country ability: high seating position, two-stage transfer case and four-wheel drive will cope with all obstacles in your path.

    Modest French RENAULT DUSTER 2015-2016

The new version of the old car is not too different. Slightly changed optics (dual headlights), a new grille with honeycombs and a couple of new features, such as cruise control, parking sensors and heated seats.

In the basic configuration, only a 102-horsepower gasoline engine with 1.6 MT 4x2 is offered. The price starts from 8100 euros.

In this configuration you will not see:

  • Power windows.
  • Fog lights.
  • Conditioner.
  • Chrome-plated interior elements.
  • Audio systems and on-board computer.

But you will have:

  • Black handles, bumpers and rear-view mirrors.
  • Power steering.
  • Immobilizer.
  • 1 airbag.
  • Folding seats.

A very modest set of almost 600 thousand Russian rubles.

Duster's cross-country ability is akin to its basic configuration - modest. He will drive along heavily overgrown roads in the field, cross shallow mud puddles, but he may not be able to cope with wet grass on a small slope. What can we say about the tracks on trophy raids.

LADA 4 × 4 UrbanNiva 2014-2015 - an old familiar fighter

"Urban" - sounds like a car made for the city. But at first glance it immediately becomes clear: nothing new. Still the same old trusted soldier in a slightly overhauled uniform.

There are few changes in the new Lada:

  • The new plastic grille is made in the form of three strips connecting and framing the headlights.
  • The front bumper is painted in body color and supplemented with wear-resistant plastic underneath.
  • Slightly modified "janitor" on the rear window.
  • Slightly larger mirrors.
  • There was an air conditioner, which is very nice. In the cabin, the central tunnel was slightly modified, cup holders appeared in it, the lighting control unit was slightly changed (now it is located above the mirror). Also between the seats is a control unit for electric side mirrors and power window pedals. As for the “insides”, nothing has changed here. Niva still eats ten liters per hundred. Accelerates to a hundred in 17 seconds. Under the hood, it has a standard four-cylinder, 1.7 liter volume, which produces 83 horsepower. This is paired with a good old five-speed manual transmission. All this, on 16-inch iron rims, you get for about 5900 euros.

The new LADA 4×4 Urban turned out to be the same standard Lada as it was. And, like the previous model, it is suitable for trips to nature, extreme fishing and hunting. This car feels great off-road and is not well suited for city or highway driving.

The second generation of semi-domestic crossoversChevroletNiva

The new ShNIVA is fundamentally different from the first Chevrolet Niva, both externally and internally.

The changes have completely affected the body: a double false radiator grille, a completely new, improved optics (both front and rear!). The car has become a little larger and noticeably higher.

But the best part is not that. The creators have eliminated the shortcomings that the owners of the previous version were dissatisfied with:

  • The new car has a more economical engine (sixteen-valve PSAEC8 from France of the RENAULT campaign) with a volume of 1.8 liters and an output of 135 hp.
  • Front-wheel drive has appeared, which is more convenient for city driving (all-wheel drive will also be available).
  • Due to the new chassis, comfort suffered a little, but patency and handling improved.
  • An automatic transmission option will be available in the future.
  • The presence of a snorkel (to keep your engine running while you drive on the lake).
  • In addition to the previous point: the air intake is brought to the roof level.

Shevik was very pleased with the price segment in which he is included. They want only about 6,150 euros for the basic equipment (even a fully packed crossover will cost one and a half thousand euros more, which fits well into the budget cars of this type).

For this little money you are waiting for:

  • Power windows in front.
  • One airbag.
  • Reinforced suspension.
  • Mechanical transmission.

The cross-country ability of the Chevrolet Niva - 2 2015-2016 is much better than that of the direct competitor of the Frenchman Duster, but still inferior to Patriot and Niva.

On this car, it is not a shame to drive to the city for shopping and take a campaign of friends to barbecue.

Chinese crossover with hawk eyes LIFAN X60 New

Looking at this miracle of the Asian auto industry, you understand that the crossover is strong, albeit pot-bellied. The front part is decorated with headlights called Hawk-Eye. But on the rounded forms of Lifan, the resemblance of the headlights to the eyes of a hawk is somehow lost.

Consider some technical details in this car (in its basic configuration):

  • The economical engine is a four-cylinder, 1.8-liter with a capacity of 128 hp.
  • Front-wheel drive.
  • Five-speed manual transmission.
  • Independent suspension.
  • Fog lights front and rear.
  • Smoker kit (ashtray and cigarette lighter).
  • Power steering.
  • Additional power connector.
  • Alarm, immobilizer and two airbags.
  • Air conditioner.
  • Audio preparation, MP3, USB and 4 speakers.

That's all, a few more pleasant things and good cross-country ability will get you for a price starting from 8500 euros. This is the most expensive car on our list.

Of course, outwardly it is more suitable for some Kisa's shopping trips, but the first impression is very deceptive. Although Lifan is not a full-fledged SUV, it also copes well with difficulties: it calmly overcomes mud puddles, copes with fairly deep and steep pits and adequately climbs uphill at a large angle of inclination.

The most unpretentious and passable UAZ Hunter

“Undeservedly forgotten”, “faithful, but not broken” - this is how this legendary domestic-made SUV has now begun to be called.

The UAZ company decided to stop the production of this model. It is not clear why: Hunter fans will never switch to a Patriot, which, in their opinion, is too urban. Now they only have to patch up their iron horses, and when they completely refuse (which will not happen very soon!), Look at options from the old foreign classics.

Truly, this car is one of the most enduring representatives of its type. On UAZ you can go anywhere and be sure that you will get out of there. He can dive half a meter into the water, and still take out!

The price of such a beast in the database is from 5800 euros. What is included, see below:

  • Spring front suspension.
  • Power steering.
  • Five-speed manual transmission DAYMOS.
  • Injection petrol engine ZMZ 40905.
  • Two stage dispenser.
  • Headlight hydrocorrector.
  • Comfortable seats (5 pcs) with washable cover.
  • Steel discs.
  • Well-known two fuel tanks of 35 liters.

Guest from China GreatWallM4 HOWER

More and more cars from China are becoming popular in our country. An example of this is the GreatWall brand. Last year, the sales of these cars exceeded even the wildest expectations of the campaign owners (112% of the sales target was achieved). This greatly raised the morale of the Chinese concern, and this year it plans to beat this figure.

Here is one of the representatives of the lineup with which the Chinese are going to conquer our country - GreatWallM4 HOWER.

The basic equipment of this machine is called Standard and includes:

  • Sixteen-valve engine with a volume of 1.5 liters and a power of 104 hp.
  • Five-speed manual transmission (in the future, automatic and CVT may be available).
  • Front-wheel drive.
  • Two airbags.
  • Alloy wheels 16'.
  • Combined upholstery.
  • Air conditioner.
  • On-board computer.
  • Four power windows.
  • Central locking with remote control.
  • Radio with MP3, USB, AUX, CD.

The price for the whole set is low - from 7.5 thousand euros.

Small and stylish crossover from China HaimaS5

The third representative of the Chinese auto industry on our list. He came to conquer us last year at an exhibition in Moscow. The Italian designers from the LDA studio did their best. The car has a semi-sporty look, complex headlight geometry and clear body lines. All this will certainly interest the younger generation of motorists.

Let's see what is under the hood of this version of the crossover from China:

  • Gasoline power plant - atmospheric engine GN16-VF1 with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 122 hp.
  • Five-speed manual transmission.
  • Front-wheel drive.
  • ABS+EBD and BAS.
  • Independent suspension.
  • Airbags front and sides.
  • Electric power steering.
  • Rear view camera and parking sensors.
  • Multiwheel.
  • Air conditioner.
  • Fabric salon.
  • On-board computer.
  • Multimedia system with large touch screen and DVD.
  • Electrically adjustable side mirrors.

Not bad for 8300 euros. It is from this mark that the prices for this crossover begin. The car is more like a city car, which does not prevent him from calmly driving where there are no roads. And yet, it is not recommended to go deep where the Hunter's wheel has not gone.

CHERYTIGGO 3 in Russia this autumn

The older brother of this model (Tiggo 5) appeared in our country in 2013. He gained some popularity, but did not fit into the budget cars. Therefore, having learned that 3 “tiger cubs” will start this fall, we could not ignore it.

By the way, they plan to assemble the crossover in Cherkessk at the Derways plant. So you can call the car "his own, dear."

Let's take a look at what awaits us this fall and whether it will fit into 600 thousand.

The manufacturer offers us a small, beautiful car with characteristic features, average cross-country ability and a good set of options already in the database:

  • Gasoline engine with a working volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 126 hp.
  • Five-speed manual transmission or continuously variable transmission CVT (variator).
  • Front-wheel drive.
  • Power steering.
  • Power windows for all 4 windows.
  • Air conditioner.
  • Parktronic.
  • Audio system with four speakers.
  • Fog lights.
  • Alloy wheels.
  • Two airbags in front.
  • Multifunctional steering wheel with the possibility of its height adjustment.

Beautiful car externally, let us down a bit in power. Therefore, you should not drive it on complete off-road. On rural dusty roads, she will show herself quite well, but rivers and deep ravines are beyond her power. This is a stylish car for the city, which you can drive to the city beach and leave in the parking lot.

The price for it is 98,000 yuan, which in euros will be approximately 5,700. It remains to be hoped that the price tag in Russia will not differ too much from the Chinese one.

The workhorse from Taganrog - Tager 2.3 MT STD (MT1)

The last car on our list is the brainchild of engineers from the Taganrog Automobile Plant (TagAZ).

This is a classic compact SUV for those who do not care about the appearance of the car. With its exterior, it resembles well-known military vehicles. And from any country.

The Tager package for 7100 European rubles includes such options as:

  • Fabric salon.
  • Driver's seat height adjustment.
  • Power windows for two windows.
  • Rear-view mirrors with electric drive and heating.
  • Six speakers and standard audio preparation.
  • Immobilizer and central locking.
  • Steering wheel height adjustable.
  • Airbag.

As for the insides, here the manufacturers offer us:

  • 2.3 liter petrol engine with 150 hp.
  • Mechanical five-speed gearbox.
  • Rear drive.
  • Tank for 70 l.
  • Independent double wishbone suspension with anti-roll bar.
  • Alloy wheels.

A suitable car for off-road driving, participation in trophy raids and just for trips to the country for potatoes. A faithful iron friend for those who need a working car that will not let you down.

Let's draw conclusions based on the considered models

All presented cars are good. You need to choose from them, based on your tastes and needs. If you like to go fishing every day to your favorite lake in the forest, it is better to take something from the Russian car industry.

And if you prefer to drive along city streets and highways and only occasionally get out into nature, try Renault or the “Chinese”. They look nice and are inferior to Russian cars in terms of cross-country ability.

There are also models that combine both qualities. The same SHNIVA - looks stylish and passable.

And do not forget: you can drive anywhere by any car, but not everyone will be able to get out later. Therefore, choose what you need, so as not to be disappointed later.

Initially, crossovers were considered all-wheel drive cars with increased ground clearance, outwardly similar to jeeps. However, the first condition the farther, the less it works: many cars of this class have lost modifications with four-wheel drive altogether. However, such a cut in no way led to a price reduction - it’s just that their already small off-road capabilities have become even more modest.

Due to a sharp and multiple rise in price at the beginning of this year, many crossovers that were previously considered budget ones have now registered in the “over a million” segment.

1. Toyota RAV4 2.0. (146 hp) CVT 2WD "Comfort Plus" - 1,463,000 rubles.

Engine: 1987 cm3; 146 hp; 187 Nm

Temperament: 180 km/h; 11.1 s

Consumption: 7.4 l/100 km (average)

In the past generation, Toyota offered a choice between a short and long version, but the new RAV4 has established a single standard - with a wheelbase increased to 2660 mm. At the same time, due to shortened overhangs and a deliberately aggressive appearance, the crossover has become more lean and athletic: the Japanese are diligently trying to bring the “rafik” out of the female rut, at least into unisex.

The only pity is that at the same time, deliberate brutality also seeped into the interior: the finishing materials seem smooth and unyielding, and the design is too straightforward. But there was an all-wheel drive modification with a 2.2-liter diesel engine. The “Comfort” package with a CVT can be considered optimal, which includes all the necessary options, including climate control, rear parking sensors and a camera.

Equipment. Airbags (7), ABS, ESP, hill start assist, fog lights, Isofix, remote central locking, climate and cruise control, on-board computer, tilt steering wheel with power, power windows (4), leather steering wheel trim, heated front seats, driver's seat height adjustment, electric and heated folding mirrors, LED running lights, xenon headlights, rear parking sensors, rain and light sensors, rear view camera, MP3 audio system with USB and Bluetooth, alloy wheels alloy

2. Hyundai ix35 2.0 AT 4WD Travel - 1,243,900 rubles.

Engine: 1998 cm3; 150 hp; 191 Nm

Temperament: 175 km/h; 11.7 s

Consumption: 7.0–11.7 l/100 km

The model debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the fall of 2009, and was restyled in 2013. The car looks modern, and the interior in terms of quality of finish and design is hardly inferior to the best Japanese and European counterparts. The Travel package should be chosen for the parking sensors and the combined interior trim.

Equipment. Airbags (6), ABS, ESP, hill start assist, fog lights, Isofix, center. remote control lock, climate and cruise control, on-board computer, power steering wheel adjustable in length and angle, power windows (4), fabric/leather seat trim, seat heating, steering wheel heating, driver's seat height adjustment, electric drive and heated folding mirrors, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights, rear view camera, parking sensors, rain and light sensors, MP3 audio system with USB and Bluetooth, alloy wheels

3. Nissan Qashqai 2.0 4WD CVT SE - 1,420,000 rubles.

Engine: 1997 cm3; 144 hp; 200 Nm

Temperament: 182 km/h, 10.1 s

Consumption: 6.0–9.6 l/100 km

The SE package, with which all-wheel drive modifications begin, is only the second in terms of equipment, but very rich. The LE version is even more attractive, the list of its equipment includes keyless entry, engine start with a button, a surround view system, and a leather interior. However, you will have to pay 10 percent more for it.

Equipment. Airbags (7), ABS, ESP, hill start assist, start-stop system, Isofix, fog lights, remote central locking, on-board computer, climate and cruise control, adjustable in length and angle power steering, power windows (4), heated front seats, driver's seat height adjustment, power and heated folding mirrors, leather steering wheel trim, rain and light sensors, MP3 audio system with USB and Bluetooth, alloy wheels

4. Kia Sportage 2.0 AT 4WD Luxe - 1,194,900 rubles.

Engine: 1999 cm3; 150 hp; 191 Nm

Temperament: 174 km/h; 11.7 s

Consumption: 6.7–11.2 l/100 km

Unlike its insipid predecessors, the third-generation Sportage looks spectacular and lives up to its "physical" name for the first time. And the quality of interior trim has reached a new level. In the optimal version, it is equipped quite well - there are even LED running lights and electric folding mirrors.

Equipment. Airbags (6), ABS, ESP, hill start assist, hill descent assist, fog. headlights, Isofix, alarm system, center. remote control lock, climate and cruise control, on-board computer, power steering wheel adjustable in length and angle, power windows (4), seat and steering wheel heating, driver adjustment. seat height, power and heated folding mirrors, LED daytime running lights and lights, rain and light sensors, rear parking sensors, MP3 audio system with USB and Bluetooth, alloy wheels

5. Mitsubishi Outlander 2.0 CVT 4WD Intence - 1,409,990 rubles.

Engine: 1998 cm3; 146 hp; 196 Nm

Temperament: 185 km/h; 12.0 s

Consumption: 6.7–9.8 l/100 km

The third-generation crossover, presented in 2012 in Geneva, now does not look as impressive as its predecessor. But with almost the same dimensions, it looks larger, more solid and more expensive. The interior of the car has been improved, and the steering wheel is finally adjustable in height. We chose the Intence package for an additional 5 airbags compared to the previous Invite version.

Equipment. Airbags (7), ABS, ESP, hill start assist, fog lights, Isofix, central locking with remote control, climate and cruise control, on-board computer, power steering wheel adjustable in length and angle, power windows (4 ), heated front seats, leather steering wheel, front seat height adjustment, power and heated mirrors, rain and light sensors, MP3 audio system with USB, alloy wheels

State "before" and "after"

The New Year's jump in prices mercilessly transferred some cars from the "before" state to the "after" state - meaning the border of a million rubles. Skoda Yeti was not lucky in this way in the optimal version of 1.4 DSG Ambition, the price of which is set at 1,014,000 rubles, and Suzuki New SX4, which has risen in price much more significantly - you will have to pay as much as 1,405,000 rubles.

In pursuit of cheapness

If you do not chase more or less well-equipped versions of crossovers, then many interesting cars in basic trim levels fit well into our price range. Among them are the Ford Kuga 2.5 AT 2WD Trend at a price of 1,349,000 rubles, the Honda CR-V 2.0 MT Elegance for 1,429,000 or, say, the Subaru Forester, whose price starts at 1,406,000 for the 2.0i-L VF version. Also, Hyundai Santa Fe and, finally, Suzuki Grand Vitara will cost you less than one and a half million.
