High strength car protective coating. What is Raptor Coating? What is required for application

Operation in severe off-road conditions and Luzhkovo-Sobyanin's anti-icing reagents leaves a noticeable imprint on the car's paintwork. Moreover, the winter Moscow salt cocktail is much more detrimental to the painted parts. For a long time we had to touch up chips, scratches and corrosion every spring. But on a tip from a friend, we decided to try a new remedy ...

Our machine wears a large number of different metal body kit, which has rusted in just a couple of winters, despite the high-quality powder coating. As a protective agent, we decided to test in practice a special urethane coating from U-POL called RAPTOR, which is positioned as a particularly durable, scratch-resistant and mechanical impact-resistant coating for pickup truck bodies and other equipment.

The coating is two-component, mixed with a hardener in a standard ratio of 1:3. In Russia, RAPTOR is sold as a set of four liter bottles of product and a liter bottle of hardener. Apply to the surface with anything: roller, brush or anti-gravel gun. It's a shame that in America a special pistol is included. We have to buy it separately. I purchased a gun for applying anti-gravel mixtures in one of the auto parts stores of the Rus network for 450 rubles.

To begin with, they decided to paint an irresponsible element - the rear pipe protecting the bumper. The pipe was dismantled, cleaned with a brush and petal discs to an almost shiny state. In this state, she stood for a week in the garage and managed to go rusty spots from the moisture contained in the air.

It applies well and has a matte white-gray color. But it has a completely disgusting pungent smell. When working, I recommend using a respirator. After priming, the pipe began to look like this:

It was decided to paint directly with the Raptor in the open air. The contents of the coated bottles have the consistency and appearance of hot tar. After mixing with a hardener, it liquefies sharply. It is applied easily and naturally with an anti-gravel gun, the main thing is to keep a distance of at least 30 cm.

A good result is achieved when applying already one layer. Then, after half an hour of drying, it is enough to tint those places where the soil will appear. Multi-layer coating is not recommended, as this reduces its mechanical strength. The process of hardening to tack takes about an hour. The surface texture is grainy, hard and shiny.

The composition gains strength within 23 days. A day later, it was already difficult to scratch with a fingernail. A week later — weakly scratched with a key. Of course, traces remain, but much less noticeable than on ordinary paint. And they are much harder to put on. I hope that after complete hardening, the composition will allow for a long time to protect the pipe from the effects of an aggressive environment. If the test is successful, then the entire body kit of our car will be painted.

Preparing and applying to old coatings and metal. Painting a car with a Raptor is not a difficult process and is within the power of a car enthusiast, however, it requires preliminary thorough preparation. If painting will be carried out throughout the car body, then initially you need to remove all attachments from the body: bumpers, headlights, turns, mirrors, and so on. Contaminants, traces of rust, places of peeling paint are removed from the body using chemistry and cleaning materials.

Raptor is not applied to bare metal, plastic and gloss, abrasive preparation is required! We prepare the body for painting with P180 sandpaper, this abrasive removes the gloss. The surface to be painted with the Raptor must be matte. The body, if necessary, is straightened and putty in places of dents, we process the putty with an abrasive from P80 to P180. It is recommended to apply 1-2 coats of U-POL ACID#8 Etching Primer (sold in a can or aerosol) to exposed metal areas.

Primer U-POL ACID#8 - adheres to bare metal, aluminium, galvanized and galvanized steel. The putty can also be overcoated in one coat with ACID #8 Etch Primer and without sanding the primer after 20 minutes. apply Raptor. Hard-to-reach places where it is not possible to create a risk with P180 abrasive can be treated in 1-2 layers with a special compound GRIP # 4 U-POL (aerosol) - adhesion promoter. GRIP#4 U-POL is applied to a glossy surface and creates a tacky film that adheres well to any coating after 20 minutes. apply paint or Raptor.

Parts sanded with P180 should be cleaned of sanding dust and degreased with an anti-silicone cleaner (degreaser) S2001 U-Pol. All car parts that remain on the body and will not be painted should be covered with a protective material with a film or paper, using masking tape as a fastener. After that, we prepare the Raptor for application.

The instructions for use of the Raptor say that it has excellent adhesion to the surfaces to be painted, so the painting procedure can be carried out even on the street, without fear of the sun, wind and dust. However, it is better to carry out painting indoors in the absence of dust, on a clean and fat-free body.

Painting of plastic parts

Raptor is not applied to bare plastic, only through plastic primer PLAST X2 Adhesive primer! We degrease plastic parts without paintwork and apply a risk with a red scotch-brite, then degrease again and apply in 1-2 layers of Plast X2 U-POL primer (aerosol). Only then after 20 minutes, you can apply Raptor to the primed coat. If the plastic parts are varnished, then we mat the old coating with an abrasive sponge P180 or red scotch brite, prime the places with grinding to plastic with Plast X2 U-POL spray. After, let the primer dry for 20 minutes and apply Raptor.

Raptor application technology (black version BLACK) After all the preparatory work, you can proceed to painting the body. The instructions for use recommend mixing the material with the hardener in a ratio of 3:1. In the bank where the Raptor is located, there is a mark at which the hardener should be added - it will be exactly 250 grams. You can also use measuring cups for dosing. Seal the jar and shake the contents for a few minutes to mix the Raptor and the hardener.

Raptor application with fine texture. And in order to make the texture of the applied coating smaller, it is recommended to add 10-15% of the S2040 U-POL thinner to the bottle with the material and hardener, and then you can apply Raptor even through a primer spray gun with a nozzle from 1.6 - 2.5 mm. In this case, the texture will be fine and similar to regular matte paint. Also, the use of a spray gun with a nozzle from 1.6 - 2.5 mm will save Raptor and apply the first layer faster with perfect painting of hard-to-reach places. Moreover, a primer spray gun with a nozzle from 1.6 - 2.5 mm. has an adjustable fan unlike a stone chip gun that paints in dots, so U-POL recommends using two guns for a varied application of the Raptor, both fine texture and coarse texture. Painting starts from the roof of the car with uniform movements. The gun should be kept 20 - 30 centimeters from the surface to be painted. We set the pressure on the spray gun from 2.5 to 4 atm. The texture coating can be adjusted by pressure and distance to the surface. Apply Raptor with a primer gun with a 1.6 - 2.5 mm nozzle. in 2 layers, with an interlayer drying of 40 minutes. Do not dilute the entire volume of Raptor with hardener, because Raptor is diluted with hardener after 40 minutes. will thicken and coloring into a fine texture will be difficult. Dilute Raptor with hardener only before application!

Application of Raptor with coarse texture. If you have a primer gun with a nozzle between 1.6 - 2.5 mm, then for a quick and economical painting, you can apply 1 coat using the fine texture application method. This method will also allow you to paint over all hard-to-reach places and apply the first layer evenly to all body parts. Painting starts from the roof of the car with uniform movements. The gun should be kept 20 - 30 centimeters from the surface to be painted, pressure from 2.5 - 4 atm. After 40 min. apply 2nd layer. If you only have an anti-gravel spray gun, we wind it on a can of Raptor. You can apply the first layer of the Raptor on the car body. Painting starts from the roof of the car with uniform movements. The gun should be kept 40 - 50 centimeters from the surface to be painted, pressure from 3-4 atm. It is necessary to ensure that the layer lays down without overflow, evenly. The instructions say that the thickening of the layer leads to a violation of its mechanical strength. To dry the first layer, a temperature of +20 and 40-60 minutes of time is required. Then you can apply the second layer, it is applied with the same recommendations as the first layer. Upon completion of the car body coating with the second layer, Raptor should polymerize within 14 days at above zero temperatures. The car can be operated after 12 hours, however, without serious loads on the coating.

Painting a car in the desired color (tintable version of TINTABLE) In order to paint the body of the car with the Raptor in the desired color, you need to purchase a Raptor Tintable tinting kit with a dull whitish material. You can add base, acrylic or custom pigments to your Raptor in your desired color. Next, you need to mix Raptor with a hardener in a ratio of 3: 1 and add up to 10% of the base pigment to the finished mixture. So for a bottle of Raptor, you add 100 ml. paint or pigment. Use measuring cups for dosage. If there are difficulties with the selection of the desired color scheme, then you can contact the colorist and use the selection system to determine the desired component. In the case when the color of the car is light, and the owner wants to keep it, you need to consider that the Raptor itself is milky - this can give a peculiar shade and slightly change the original color. The recommendations for applying the tinted version are the same as for the black version. Good luck in job!

Paints for coating modern car bodies have excellent characteristics and a glossy appearance. However, on jeeps, pickups, trucks operating in harsh environments, when transporting goods, ordinary paint can very soon become covered with scratches from branches or scuffs from transported goods. As a result, rust appears in place of scratches, and the car loses its attractive appearance.

There are many car body repair products on the market. We offer you to opt for products of the U-POL trademark, which has more than 60 years of experience in this field. U-POL's raptor polyurethane coating and consumables are specifically designed for use as a protective coating on pickups, SUVs and trucks.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Raptor

ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

Raptor polyurethane coating, when applied to a car body, forms a protective film, which has a number of advantages over conventional car paint, namely:

  • high strength of the material;
  • friction resistance;
  • resistance to most chemical elements;
  • easy to clean;
  • does not fade in the sun;
  • reliable surface protection against corrosion.

With all the positive aspects of the coating, the raptor is not without drawbacks. Of these, the following points can be distinguished:

  • the coating cannot be varnished, so it will always be matte;
  • the surface has the appearance of shagreen leather, which does not always look aesthetically pleasing;
  • if the technology of painting with a raptor is not followed, it may be chipped.

Packing and completeness of "Raptor"

The raptor is sold in a package containing four bottles of base material, each 750 grams, and one liter container with a hardener. The kit also includes a special anti-gravel gun, calibrated for optimal work with the raptor.

  • The coating is not afraid of moisture, salt, extreme temperatures, does not fade in the sun.
  • Protects the coating from rust.
  • Reduces noise and vibration levels.
  • It has high adhesion to body metal.
  • Does not require meticulous preparation of the surface for painting.
  • It can be applied not only with a spray gun, but also with a conventional roller or brush.
  • Painting can be done outside the garage, even on the street, at a temperature of +20. An awning is desirable - it can protect from rain.
  • Preparation for painting does not take much time.
  • The coating retains its protective properties for a long time.
  • There is no need to cover the raptor with an additional layer of varnish.

Disadvantages of painting a car with a raptor

  • Relatively long time for complete polymerization of the coating (up to 21 days according to the instructions).
  • The coating has the appearance of an orange peel.

Those car owners who decide to cover the body of their own car with a raptor are not embarrassed by these shortcomings, and the advantages leave them in full confidence that their car is reliably protected for many years of operation in the most severe conditions.

Many car owners want to keep the attractive appearance of the body as long as possible. Dirt, scratches, flying stones - all this negatively affects the protective paintwork of the body. Cracks, scratches, chips, and then rust appear. This is especially true for off-road enthusiasts, who are not so much interested in appearance as in protecting the body from corrosion.

You can protect the body with the help of galvanic coatings, galvanizing and special primers. But all these methods are not sufficiently effective and durable. Therefore, many people are turning to the use of the Raptor coating.
Autopaint Raptor protects the body from the effects of water, sand, stones, gravel. With such a coating, the car is not afraid of difficult operating conditions, so the Raptor is ideal for vehicles with increased cross-country ability.

Raptor is a 2-component polyurea elastomer (polyurea) of increased strength. The Raptor coating, due to its composition, allows to obtain a seamless elastic insulating coating.

Raptor car paint protects the body from mechanical damage, corrosion, reagents, mold, and temperature extremes.

The composition is also used to restore worn body parts. After applying the Raptor coating, a protective layer of increased strength is formed on the body, which protects it from the effects of water, mechanical damage and ultraviolet radiation.

Painting with Raptor price. To paint a car with a Raptor, you will need at least 3 sets, and this "pleasure" will cost 18 - 24 thousand rubles. subject to self-coloring. If you decide to paint the car in a workshop, then painting the car with a Raptor will cost more by the amount of the cost of the master’s work (about 10-20 thousand rudders). Do-it-yourself painting with a Raptor is carried out in several stages, let's take a look at it in detail.

Application technology

The Raptor painting technology is quite simple and is within the power of any motorist, however, it requires preliminary preparation.

What is required for application

1) Materials

To apply the Raptor, it is necessary to prepare the accompanying materials in advance. The technological process of coating application requires the use of abrasive and polishing materials, hardeners, adhesive primers for plastic, acid primers for metal, proprietary degreasers and solvents, putty, rags, etc.

2) Pistol

Also, for the correct even application of the Raptor, a proprietary pistol is required. This gun is very similar to the conventional anti-gravel, but has a number of differences.
The most important difference is the ability to adjust the size of the "pimples" or pebbles during coating. With this gun, you can create a smooth matte finish.

3) Quantity of materials

The final quality of painting largely depends on the correct choice of consumables. It is best to entrust the selection of these materials to a competent specialist.
To determine the amount of materials, you need to make some calculations. The quantity and composition of consumables depend on the area to be painted, the number and thickness of the application layers.

Work Safety Measures

The product data sheet states that the Raptor car coating is a flammable material, irritates the eyes, causes dryness and burning on open contact with the skin, vapors of the composition can cause clouding of consciousness. Therefore, as with any other painting, when painting a car with a Raptor, all safety and personal protection measures must be observed.

General safety measures when working with paints and varnishes (including Raptor car paint):

  1. The room where painting work is carried out must be well ventilated. The room should be ventilated as often as possible. In case of insufficient ventilation of the premises, one should work in them for a strictly limited time and use protective equipment: gauze bandages, respirators.
  2. Smoking is prohibited in these premises.
  3. It is forbidden to use open fire.
  4. Used materials should be kept in separate containers. Used rags - fill with water.
  5. It is important to keep the room clean, to avoid spilling paint and varnish materials.
  6. Work must be carried out in overalls, rubber gloves, a respirator and goggles.
  7. It is necessary to store paints and varnishes in a dark separate room, inaccessible to unauthorized persons. Optimal conditions: 7-8 degrees Celsius. Any container must be tightly closed and labelled.

Painting stages

Painting a car with a Raptor takes place in several stages:

  • Training

For high-quality application, the Raptor coating needs an even, prepared surface. The paint can be applied to any surface - plastic or metal.

To prepare the surface, do the following:

  1. Disassemble the body: remove bumpers, mirrors, wheels, etc.
  2. Clean the surface of the body, remove old layers of varnish and paint;
  3. Clean body parts from corrosion, where required, and carefully process;
  4. Puttying uneven areas, covering up corrosion spots and sanding;
  5. Prime the surface, preferably with an ACID acid primer;
  6. Wait a few hours for the preparation to dry completely.
  • Painting

Composition preparation. Before applying the paint, you need to prepare the composition. A hardener is added to the paint in a ratio of 3 to 1. That is, 250 g of hardener is added to 750 g of paint. The mixture must be stirred for several minutes, or just shake the jar.

Painting work must be done in a box or garage with good lighting. What to do:

  1. With the prepared composition, paint the inside of the body first to see how the paint lays down;
  2. After making sure that the Raptor lays down evenly and well, paint the body completely;
  3. Let the paint dry.

After a few hours, you can collect all the details of the car in place. In the early days, it is best to use the car in urban conditions, and only after 14 days, when the train gains strength, you can go off-road.

Conclusion

The Raptor is a great solution not only for off-road enthusiasts, but also for car owners of all categories. The Raptor coating protects the car body from aggressive environmental influences, this is especially true for regions with sudden temperature changes, and from mechanical damage. Also, with the help of the Raptor, you can restore the body from corrosion.
Painting with Raptor paint saves money and keeps the car body in excellent condition for many years.
