Quotes. Who is Aurelius Dumbledore? How many brothers did Dumbledore have

He is the greatest wizard, the fear of all villains and the support of the weak. Probably, if it were not for Dumbledore, Harry Potter would not have had the strength to win the final victory in the fight against evil. Or would it be enough? In the last part of the boy wizard book series, the reader learns that the white-bearded magician was not sinless. What kind of hero is he? Is it positive? Was it difficult to play Dumbledore? The actor was not alone.

At Hogwarts School

This is the first character to appear on the pages of the book. With a slow and stately gait, he heads towards the home of the Dursleys, the closest relatives of the orphaned Harry Potter. Dumbledore's actions are rational and logical. He calculates the moves in advance, but this is perhaps the only time he made a mistake, believing that Harry would grow up better with his family. Dumbledore made a mistake and doomed Harry to 10 painful years, which, however, only benefited the boy, as he grew up kind, reasonable and strong, as years of affection and bliss could not make him.

At school, Dumbledore received Harry cordially, but most of the time he watched the boy from afar, giving advice and explaining mistakes from time to time. The director gives his student the first direct contact and the first task only in the third year of study, when it is necessary to save an innocent person from death. Further, the connection grows stronger, and Dumbledore for Harry is no longer just a teacher, but an older comrade, friend, great magician and almost a native person. At the end of the sixth book, he dies, and this means that the boy is deprived of his most powerful protector. All these years, Professor Dumbledore was Potter's hope and support.

Actor of the first and second parts

Having played in the first parts of the Potter series, he recalled that the first reading of the role took place with the children. It was approved right away. Harris was a British actor, the fifth child in the family. At an early age, he suffered from tuberculosis. He appeared on television for the first time in 1958, and then went up, starring in historical films, received the Golden Globe for the role of King Arthur. He starred in a lot of westerns. Harris even sang and recorded a couple of albums. Being a versatile person, he auditioned as a screenwriter and director. He agreed to the role in Harry Potter at the insistence of his granddaughter. The girl threatened her grandfather that she would not talk to him if he refused to act. According to many critics and just viewers, this was the reference Dumbledore. Actor Richard Harris passed away in October 2002. He played his last role in the film "Apocalypse", where he was John the Evangelist.

What should Dumbledore be like?

It was difficult to "jump on the bandwagon of a departing train" and continue such a difficult role after Harris died. The audience managed to get used to the face of the hero, his manners and posture. The new Dumbledore - actor Michael Gambon - has some resemblance to Harris, but in fact he is completely different. Albus Harris is more stately and kind. He resembles a kind grandfather, wise and experienced. This is a classic image of a wizard, similar to Merlin and Gandalf. Despite his solid years, Dumbledore has a lively mind, a sense of humor and a condescending attitude to life. Until the seventh book, little is known about the past of the great wizard, and therefore Dumbledore was extremely positive. Actor Michael Gambon had to convey the inner essence of the hero, remember the dark spots in his biography and try to justify some prudence towards Severus Snape and Harry Potter. The hero has a difficult childhood and a rebellious character. He should not remain on the screen smiling and meek. He is strong, smart and daring, which is how Gambon should have shown him.

The result is obvious

Book 4 introduces a new Dumbledore. The long silver beard was somewhat shortened, the hero began to tie it up and changed the style of clothing. No, he did not refuse robes, but preferred gray and faded to bright colors. It was a new Dumbledore - the actor made changes in his character. The director became emotional, impetuous and sometimes even nervous. He even lashes out at Harry when he wants to know if he himself threw his name into the Goblet of Fire. Gambon's Dumbledore can be stern and even tough. He is rather chilly with Severus Snape, but is gradually imbued with sympathy for him for his feelings for Lilly Potter. The director has almost no friends, but there are as many fans and admirers as you like. Fans of the saga of the wizard boy note that Dumbledore smiles little at Gambon, while in the book he encouraged the boy with a good-natured smile through half-glasses.

Summarizing

It is impossible to compare the performers of the role of such a multifaceted and interesting wizard. The headmaster of Hogwarts was a great personality with many pleasant qualities. The actor playing Dumbledore at the beginning embodied the bright side of the image, showed that the hero is kind, calm and smart. Toward the end of the acting game, it became clear that he still remains a man, not a god. Dumbledore skillfully calculated the moves of all the players on his "chessboard", he wielded them like pawns, even in death, but everything was done for the "common good". Is this approach justified? After all, the result was achieved. There are different points of view on this matter, but the truth is unknown, probably even to the author of the books.

"The Crimes of Grindelwald" thoroughly shook up the world of "Harry Potter" - that is, sorry, now "Wizarding World". Even before the premiere, it became clear that the film would freely dispense with the previously established canon and replenish the world with new entities, and the biographies of the characters with new revelations. We watched the film and we can say: yes, we did not know how much!

In this article, we will analyze what J.K. Rowling and David Yates turned upside down in their magical world, and also ask them a bunch of uncomfortable questions.

Spoilers start below this picture!

Aurelius Dumbledore

Yes, Dumbledore has another brother, and that's Credence!

One of the main intrigues of the film was the origin of Credence Barebone. Everyone is sure that the young man comes from an important magical family, but for the time being no one knows which one. At first, we are hinted that he is Lestrange, but it immediately turns out that this is not so. And in the finale, Gellert Grindelwald proclaimed the answer: Credence is Aurelius Dumbledore, Albus' long-lost brother. In confirmation of this, the family phoenix of the Dumbledore family appeared to the young man.

Until now it was believed that Albus Dumbledore had only one brother, Aberforth, and one long dead sister, Ariana. Actually, because of the death of Ariana, Albus quarreled with Grindelwald.

The new revelation raises a lot of questions, especially the scene where the ship carrying Aurelius Credence sinks. Who was the woman who carried him with her? Mother? But Kendra Dumbledore, the mother of Albus, Aberforth and Ariana, died earlier and under completely different circumstances: she did not drown in the sea, but was accidentally killed by her daughter. And why did he need to be transported across the ocean, if teleporting is no more difficult for wizards than sneezing?

And how can Albus not know about the existence of his brother? And he doesn't know for sure - when Lita Lestrange remembers that she lost her brother, he says that he understands her because he lost his sister. He didn't lose his brother!

Ariana Dumbledore

Finally, it is not clear why this makes Credence significant. Dumbledore is not a royal family, he does not claim any throne, just a beautiful surname. Grindelwald's clause that only Credence can kill Dumbledore sounds strange. Gellert himself cannot kill a friend because of the blood oath (as well as his one), but no one else has such a problem. I remember that in the "Half-Blood Prince" there was a whole queue to kill the director ...

There is a slight possibility that Grindelwald is just lying. But for now, everything - the phoenix, the magical power, the presence of Queenie that could expose the lie - indicates that Aurelius Dumbledore is real.

McGonagall worked at Hogwarts...before she was born

Fans noticed a small, but unfortunate departure from the canon even before the film's release: Professor McGonagall was on the list of roles. And she did appear in the film.

In fact, according to official data from the Pottermore website, Minerva McGonagall was born in 1935, and has been working at Hogwarts since 1956. Recall that the action of "The Crimes of Grindelwald" takes place in 1927. But that's not all: McGonagall even appears in Leta Lestrange's flashback, which takes place 10-15 years earlier, and already there she is a professor!

There is a weak "Watsonian" explanation: this is not the McGonagall. She may have had a relative who worked in the same position. Perhaps she was even called Minerva too (according to Pottermore, the professors were named after the grandmother witch, however, by the name of Ross). Otherwise it's just a plot hole. Considering that the professor got her surname from her Muggle father, it is most likely true.

Nagini - maledictus. Who-who?

This plot twist was known even before the premiere. One of the secondary characters and Credence's passion was Nagini - Voldemort's future snake and his last Horcrux. It turns out that during the Fantastic Beasts era, she was a person from Southeast Asia. Rather, she maledictus is a new term. Judging by the description, the maledictus is very similar to a werewolf, which was Remus Lupin: Nagini involuntarily turns into a snake. One day, her transformation must go so far that she will not be able to return to human form.

This is an interesting assumption that changes our understanding of her actions. Nagini, it turns out, is not just a smart animal, but a creature with a human mind, and even much older than Voldemort. So, her service to her master was a conscious choice of an experienced sorceress.

Secrets of the Lestrange Family

Many were surprised that Lita Lestrange, Newt Scamander's girlfriend, is played by the dark-skinned mulatto Zoe Kravitz. Aren't the Lestranges purely European? But over the course of the film, her skin color gets a plot explanation. It turns out that her father coveted a charming Negro sorceress from Senegal and made her his concubine with the help of the Imperius spell. From this union, Lita was born, who was considered an outcast in the family.

We know this story from her half-brother, the African wizard Yusuf Kama, who seeks revenge on the Lestrange family. Kama is an episodic and not very useful character for the plot, whose story would be more appropriate in a separate picture. Kama is certain that Credence is Lyta's long-lost brother, Corvus. But Lyta immediately tells her part of the story: it turns out that she replaced Corvus as a baby. After that, the real Corvus died in a shipwreck. In order not to find out about this, she had to pass off the baby Credence as Corvus.

The story raises a lot of questions, primarily to the laws of the magical world. Can you easily seduce women with the Imperius Curse? Didn't Papa Lestrange conjure Azkaban for himself? And, in light of the revelation about Credence-Dumbledore, why did a whole crowd of wizards sail across the ocean on a Muggle ship and how did Lyta manage to accidentally replace a descendant of one magical family with a descendant of another? It already smells like a piano in the bushes in the spirit of Indian melodramas.

Queenie on the Grindelwald side

Queenie, Tina Goldstein's sister, goes on a rampage throughout the film, battling it out with her fiancé, the No-Maj baker Kowalski. She wants to marry him, but this is forbidden by the laws of the wizarding world. But in the finale, Quinn, oddly enough, joins the ranks of Grindelwald's supporters after his pep talk about how he wants to change the world. In it, Grindelwald pretended to be an innocent sheep and did not call for the enslavement of no-magicians - but on the sidelines he voiced precisely such plans.

The paradox is that Queenie is a Legile, she can read people's minds and even inspire them. Hadn't she read in Gellert's mind that he wanted to turn people like her lover into slaves? Could it be that Grindelwald was lying just behind closed doors, but publicly speaking the truth? Or did Queenie make such an important decision without checking it in any way? Or did he manage to slip fake thoughts into her? Or ... In short, there is no answer to this question in the film.

Fashion and technology of the magical world

The wizarding world itself was very different 70 years before Harry Potter saw it. The paradox is that this world seems to have developed backwards.

For example, the corridors of the Ministry of Magic in one scene are vacuumed by a steampunk machine. Do magicians have such technology? Why then do they exploit the unfortunate house elves and where will these inventions go in three quarters of a century?

Another oddity is the clothes. All the heroes in the magical world are dressed in the fashion of the 1920s, sometimes even ahead of it. Dumbledore walks around school in a jacket and vest, men wear hats, ladies have fashionable hairstyles for those years.

After that, it’s wild to remember how old-fashioned the same world looked in Harry Potter, where caps, turbans, frock coats and robes were in fashion. At what point did Dumbledore decide to walk around in an ancient mantle instead of a jacket and change everyone else into something like that? Why has fashion in the wizarding world not only lagged behind the world of non-magicians, but moved backwards?

Grindelwald foresaw World War II!

The creators saved the most lethal revelation for Grindelwald's speech. Yes, much more deadly than some lost brother, and requiring immediate explanation.

In his very convincing speech, the main villain says that the magicians need to take over the world - not by the right of the strong, but in order to save it from the raging Muggles and their wars. For example, he shows visions of the war of the future: tanks, planes, atomic bombing. If he could peep the first two things at the First World War (although clearly a later technique is shown), then the atomic mushroom will bloom for the first time over the planet only in 1945!

So Grindelwald is a prophet? Does he see the future and is able to show it? Then why the hell is it given so little attention? It is this prophecy about the destruction of the world by No-Majs that should be at the center of the plot, and not the family tree of the Lestranges or Dumbledore! Or, on the contrary, did he create this future by somehow spurring Muggle science (this is generally possible for a magician)?

At the same time, serious questions arise for the magical community: why didn’t you intervene already during the First World War? Is it only Grindelwald who thinks that wars need to be stopped?

Unfortunately, The Crimes of Grindelwald leaves more questions than answers. I would like to believe that Rowling and company have a cunning plan in store for each such case, and everything will turn out logically in the end.

But the experience of the new Star Wars tells us otherwise. It may turn out that the writers invent twists on the go, and then try to bring explanations for them, breaking the previously established canon. And what kind of canon can we talk about in the era of eternal restarts?

Harry Potter is a legendary saga about a boy who managed to survive after an encounter with the worst wizard in the world of Potter. Children all over the world are still excitedly reviewing all parts of the saga, as well as re-reading books.

Few people could have noticed in childhood that the cast was changing. And some characters were played by different actors. This happened to the incredible wizard and headmaster of Hogwarts Albus Dumbledore.

In addition, all parts have long been removed, but this story is not forgotten. Not so long ago, film adaptations of other Rowling books were released, which also tell about the world of wizards. And there the audience was to meet Dumbledore, but this time he was much younger.

Richard Harris

Richard Harris is a great actor who is impossible not to love. He was remembered by everyone as the director of the school of magic. However, few people know that he did not want to accept the offer and star in the film. On the big screens, the audience managed to see him thanks to his granddaughter.

She was a fan of Harry Potter, so she threatened him that she would stop talking to him if he did not play the role of Dumbledore. The man had no choice but to agree. Unfortunately, he did not appear in all parts, since he died in 2002.

Michael Gambon

Gambon is the finest theater and film actor. Also successful on television. Repeatedly received awards and nominations for the Emmy, Golden Globe and many others. He came to Potter after the sudden death of Richard Harris.

Although this is an insanely sad fact, Michael managed to perfectly cope with the role entrusted to him and did not upset millions or even billions of fans. He played in the remaining parts and showed himself only from the best side.

Jude Law

To date, the role of Albus Dumbledore is played by the most beautiful Jude Law. He got the role of a young character, even before he became the famous director of the school of wizards. The artist is incredibly talented and at the moment it is difficult to imagine someone else in his place.

For the first time we see Albus Dumbledore on Privet Street. He was a tall, thin, and very old wizard with silver hair and a beard (both of which were so long that he could well have tucked them into his belt). His “blue eyes shone brightly from under crescent-shaped glasses, sitting on a long nose, so hooked that it seemed as if this nose had been broken in at least two places”. Above the left knee of the wizard is a scar in the form of the London Underground Road. Dumbledore wears a long frock coat, a purple robe, and buckled boots.

Personality and character

The name Albus is of Latin origin, it means "white". The surname Dumbledore is associated with the Old English word bumble-bee "bumblebee". As J.K. herself says Rowling, Dumbledore often walks around humming to himself, and this singing is like the buzzing of a bumblebee. The full name of our hero is Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.

Albus Dumbledore does not tolerate formalism, his speech is simple and clear. For him there are no prejudices and superstitions. The wizard calmly and confidently pronounces the real name of You-Know-Who and convinces others of this. For Dumbledore, there are no racial prejudices: the sorcerer accepts the half-giant Hagrid, the werewolf Lupin, to study at school, he hires the centaur Florence, he is kind with house elves.

Another important trait of Dumbledore is patience and generosity. He is rarely seen angry, but when he does, it is for very serious reasons.

Dumbledore remains calm in dangerous moments. For example, he stops the panic during the appearance of a mountain troll at the school.

At the same time, Dumbledore is secretive. When he and Harry were discussing the Mirror of Erised, the wizard said that he saw himself in it, holding a pair of woolen socks in his hands. However, it is later revealed that in reality he, like Harry, saw his family in the mirror. Albus' brother, Aberforth, told Harry that Albus always had a talent for hiding and hiding.

Despite his wisdom and genius, Dumbledore is capable of strange, sometimes eccentric acts (the reason for which lies in the unusual sense of humor of the sorcerer). For example, at the opening of the school year, he could say:

"Welcome! Welcome to the start of the new school year at Hogwarts! Before starting the banquet, I would like to say a few words. And my words will be: Berk! Bubble! Remainder! Trick! Everything, thank you all!”

Childhood and youth

The great wizard of modern times was born in 1881. His parents, Percival and Kendra Dumbledore, doted on their son. Three years later, a younger brother, Aberforth, was born, followed by a sister, Ariana. When the girl was only 6 years old, a tragedy occurred in the family: Ariana refused to use magic (because of the bullies who pestered her), the head of the family was hidden in Azkaban because he wanted to punish them, and Kendra Dumbledore had to move to Godric's Hollow. Already from there, at the age of 11, Albus Dumbledore entered Hogwarts School, the faculty of Gryffindor, and became the most brilliant student in her history. He received all the honorary awards that were established by the school, entered into correspondence with the most famous wizards of the time: Nicholas Flamel, Bathilda Bagshot, Adalbert Woffling, and articles of the aspiring magician were published in leading magical science journals, for example, in Transfiguration Today, Problems sorcery" and others. Being a very enthusiastic nature, Albus did not notice what was happening in the family, even during the holidays he was engaged in magical sciences.

In his youth, Dumbledore befriended an equally gifted but evil wizard named Grindelwald. The epiphany came when Ariana died during a quarrel with Grindelwald. The pain of loss and guilt has not left Albus since then, although he himself never spoke about it.

Apparently, the death of Ariana and the story of Grindelwald prompted Dumbledore to take up teaching, although the young wizard was predicted to have the highest positions in the Ministry of Magic.

Magic and mentorship

Dumbledore and Fawkes*

Dumbledore's pet is a phoenix named Fawkes. The phoenix is also the wizard's patronus.

Dumbledore is a magician of world renown. Here are just some of his regalia: Chief Wizard of the Wizengamot, Commander of the Order of Merlin First Class, Chairman of the International Confederation of Wizards.

However, our hero began his career with teaching and was faithful to his chosen activity until the very end.

Initially, Albus Dumbledore held the position of Transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts. In 1956, he was appointed headmaster of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

During his work, a lot of very different events happened, from the pranks of schoolchildren to the fight with the most dangerous wizard - Voldemort.

Much can be said about this, but it is better to read it anyway.

Care

Albus Dumbledore card**

Dumbledore passed away the way he planned. Getting another horcrux, the wizard was greatly weakened and became an easy prey for Malfoy Jr. Draco disarmed the magician, but killed Albus Severus Snape. Dumbledore's death was prearranged between Dumbledore and Snape.

The last time Dumbledore communicates with Harry is through a portrait in the headmaster's office. In the future, the youngest son of Harry Potter received his name in honor of the two headmasters of the school, Dumbledore and Snape.

The universe of everyone's favorite wizard Harry Potter is impossible to imagine without the wise mentor of the young magician - Albus Dumbledore. It is he who, for the most part, directs the actions of little Harry, protects him from the dangers of dark witchcraft and ultimately prepares him for the final battle with the terrifying Lord Voldemort. It is impossible to imagine the Hogwarts school without such a familiar director, and in almost every plot significant scene of the film epic, Dumbledore appears in one way or another. The actor who played the old wizard in the first two films died of a fatal illness, but not a single story about Michael Gambon is still complete without a mention of Richard Harris.

First Dumbledore

Many fans consider the first two Harry Potter films to be the most magical and memorable. It is possible that the great, kind and wise Dumbledore contributed in part to this. The actor, who played a powerful magician in the films "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", has become a kind of symbol of the "book" Albus.

Richard Harris was born in 1930 in Ireland. At the beginning of his life, he dreamed of becoming a professional rugby player. In his youth, Harris showed amazing success in sports, but soon he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and the novice athlete was pushed aside from professional rugby.

The beginning of the way

It took Harris two years to fully recover from the illness. All this time he studied literature and eventually came to the conclusion that he was more interested in art than sports. In 1956, the future Dumbledore (an actor, by the way, originally planned to become a director) enrolled in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. In the same year, he made his theatrical debut in the production of "Square Guy", and Harris began to successfully play on stage, along with celebrities such as Albert Finney.

The first film of the talented Irishman was the well-known film Alive and Well in 1959, but after that the actor who played Dumbledore starred in many other films. His impressive track record includes such world-famous titles as The Guns of Navarone, Mutiny on the Bounty, Such is the Sports Life Richard Harris has managed to prove to Hollywood his ability to shine along with undeniable stars such as Marlon Brando.

Last years

Richard Harris continued to play in famous films, including Russell Crowe's "Gladiator", which was released in 2000. Already in 2001, he got the role of one of his favorite literary characters. The actor playing Dumbledore sincerely hoped to work throughout the film adaptation of JK Rowling's novels, but a year after the release of the first film, he died from a rare cancer - Hodgkin's lymphoma.

New professor

After the death of one of the leading actors, the director had to urgently look for a new director of Hogwarts. Several candidates applied to replace Harris, but in the end the role went to Michael Gambon, the second Irish theatrical figure who managed to bring to life the image of such a complex character as Albus Dumbledore.

The actor was born in Dublin in 1940 and played for a long time on the stages of London theaters before trying his hand at film and television. Gambon is almost unknown to the average Russian viewer - his only significant role was the character of the director of a magical school from the exciting series of books about Harry Potter. It must be admitted, however, that the second actor, who plays Dumbledore, did not at all seek to surpass or somehow "catch up" with his predecessor in terms of realism and level of skill. On the contrary, Gambon brought a bit of his own vision of a multifaceted character to the next five films about the Boy-Who-Lived.

Young Dumbledore

The actor, invited to participate in the so-called "flashbacks" (scenes from the past of movie characters), had little experience in acting in films, but he immediately fell in love with the audience and fans of Harry Potter.

Toby Regbo was born in 1991 in London. The young man became famous thanks to the role of young Nemo in the movie "Mr. Nobody". He was invited to play young Stefan in the film "Maleficent", but the director eventually decided that such a character should be played by a younger performer.

Interestingly, Toby's father is descended from a Norwegian clan, while his mother is a native British. The grandfather of the young actor was the captain of an Italian ship, and his grandmother was a ballerina from Australia. Being an extraordinary personality and possessing a non-trivial talent, young Regbo was able to adequately show himself in the world of cinema and win recognition from eminent masters of the genre.

Who Lost Harry Potter?

Dumbledore (actor, it doesn't really matter) is one of the key characters in the famous book series, and the casting for this role was carried out exclusively among British and Irish cinema figures. Although it was originally planned that Richard Harris would play the wise headmaster of Hogwarts until the last film of the epic, his sudden death dashed the hopes of the director and the entire film crew, which has become a kind of friendly community thanks to the magic of the Harry Potter universe. Dumbledore (the actor, by the way, was not chosen immediately) at that time set the main background for the storyline.

Even before Michael Gambon, the famous Ian McKellen was listed as a candidate. However, the legendary "Gandalf" refused the role, explaining his decision by the fact that the previous Professor Dumbledore (actor Richard Harris) considered his performance frankly unsatisfactory. In addition, McKellen did not want the images of the White Mage Gandalf and the powerful headmaster of a magical school to be associated with the audience with the same person.
