Homemade wooden phone case. Other

Wood is a material that never goes out of style. Recently, due to the dominance of plastic and other "high-tech" materials, wooden things have become a sign of style. In addition, wood is a very pleasant to the touch material. Therefore, it is quite logical to make something that we often touch from it. I'm talking about a smartphone case. In our case, this is the iPhone, but this does not matter at all. A wooden case for a smartphone can be made in various ways: cut on a machine, glued from parts cut on a machine, and made by hand using a carpentry tool. Not everyone has machines, but (potentially) everyone has hands, so we’ll tell you about the third method.

First you need to take a wooden block a little larger than the phone and saw off two thin plates from it. These will be the front and back walls.

Then we cut out the sides from the wood in size slightly thicker than the phone.

We fasten these blanks with wood glue and leave to dry for a day.

Further processing can be carried out in different ways. The most common way is staining and varnishing. But if you want to make a really original case, then here are examples of different materials and processing methods: on the left, an amaranth case covered with colorless wax, in the middle, made of oak, aged for 5 minutes in Rubio Monocoat black oil, on the right, also made of oak, aged 15 minutes in Rubio Monocoat transparent oil. After processing, we attach a leather clasp with a sewn-in magnet to the case. Under the second magnet, we drill a recess in the case and attach it there with glue.

The wooden iPhone case is ready.

Today in mobile phone stores there is a huge range of cases for cell phones, which will satisfy any needs and tastes. However, often when you want to purchase a case for a specific phone model, it turns out that the choice is limited to a few standard options. It is very easy to find a silicone case or handbag for a touch phone, but it is not so easy to find original options.

Swing phone case.
We suggest not to get carried away by searching for commercial offers, but to make an armor-piercing case for a mobile phone with your own hands. The process will take about three hours, if you have everything you need nearby. So, to make a cover you will need:
Mobile phone. You can get by with data on its dimensions, but it is advisable to try on every detail on it during the manufacturing process
Flexible plastic. Suitable plastic folder for papers
Leather. Or other fabric. Better - skin
Metal plate with a thickness of 1 mm. Decking - good
Tools and more: scissors, marker, ruler, sewing machine, Moment glue

We make a frame.
The frame part is what the whole structure will rest on. Let's make it out of plastic.

1. We place the phone with the display down on a sheet of plastic, and mark the dimensions of the cell phone on it. You will need a ruler to accurately verify the dimensions and apply them to the material. In order not to get confused, you can proceed in stages: first, “wrap” the phone in a sheet of material, preserving its bending points, and only then cut out the elements, the position and shape of which correspond to the cellular controls - the display, the buttons. The frame should look something like this:

The largest cutout in the center is the display, two “squares” on opposite sides are the camera window

2. We try on the frame, it should turn out something like this:

Attachment to phone case.

Front part.
The front part is a folding plate that protects the phone's display. It can be similar to the back part - depending on the dimensions of the phone. About everything in order.

1. Let's take a metal plate as a basis. The main thing here is to correctly calculate the strength and weight, since heavy iron will simply pull the pocket during operation. Corrugated board is suitable, I used an aluminum sheet, in which I made stiffeners by bending the edges.
We put the phone face down on the sheet, and note the dimensions.

2. Cut out the plate:

in the second figure, a mark is also made on the outside of the material for sewing convenience.

4. We apply the outer side of the marked piece of leather to another piece with similar dimensions. We sew them on the CMM according to the markup:

The height of the "pocket" can be greater than the height of the phone, taking into account the value of another parameter - its width.

5. Cut out unnecessary parts of the material along the seam:

6. Turn over the "pocket" =), and "dress" it on a metal plate. The front part is ready!

Making the back.
As already mentioned, the back part can be absolutely identical to the front (excluding the size of the cell). To facilitate the design, I replaced aluminum with plastic.

I cut out the plastic from the plastic folder. Its main task is to preserve the shape of the hull, and not to strengthen it.

We fasten the resulting parts.

7. Again we wrap the frame part around the phone case, press its overlapping parts, and glue them together.

Two sheathed plates and a glued frame part.

8. Cut out a hole for the camera eye in the back plate. The edges of the hole can be glued or pulled together with a thread from the inside so that they do not spread.

9. We fasten the front flap (sorry for the terms) and the back plate, using the "extra" millimeters in length, or sewing on an additional piece of leather. The attachment point will hold the flip plate.

Wooden cases with engraving look more expensive and unusual than standard models made of plastic and silicone. This accessory will help you protect your smartphone from damage and dust. At the same time, the screen and the necessary elements remain in the public domain: camera, buttons, sensor.

Types of wooden cases to order

This section contains different types of cases for your iPhone.

What design options are available:

  • Name engraving. Order a wooden case with a surname as a gift to a friend, colleague, loved one. Inside there is an option "Sporty style": you can add a number and imitate the inscription on the team uniform.
  • your drawing. Create the perfect layout yourself or contact our designer. By clicking "Start creating", a full-fledged online designer opens in a separate window. Here you can draw, upload pictures from social networks, choose ready-made clipart - we will make any engraving on a wooden case to order for you.
  • Case made of different types of wood. Sophisticated and very effective version of the case with your design. We will divide your picture into several parts, cut them out of wood of different species and assemble them like a puzzle.

You can also choose the color of the base - bamboo or mahogany. Covers with a surname can be supplemented with a pattern; stars, triangles, flowers and other elements are available.

What are the advantages of laser engraving?

Laser engraving of wooden cases is the way we transfer any of your designs onto a wooden base.

Why we offer it:

  • You can transfer high resolution pictures. The laser is a high-precision equipment, and it is able to repeat the smallest details of the picture.
  • Fast process. It takes seconds to make a wooden case, the main thing is to prepare a layout based on your photo or picture.
  • The drawing cannot be erased. The laser removes the top layer of wood, and the picture is embossed. It will be unharmed as long as you use the case.
  • The price does not depend on the circulation. The laser does not require blanks, clichés, etc., so you can order any number of covers from 1 piece and not overpay for the complexity of the work.
  • You can make a batch of the same accessories. If you need a series of wooden cases with custom engraving, the laser will accurately repeat even a complex pattern.

My father recently bought an iPhone 5s (now outdated) and I know for a fact that he will never buy a case for it. Therefore, I figured out how to make a do-it-yourself phone case as a gift so that his conscience would not let him refuse it.

Although I make a wooden case for a 5s model phone, you can make a case for any iPhone by downloading the case specifications from the Internet (there are with iPhone lineup parameters for those who develop applications and accessories for them). I didn’t even have to pick up the phone itself to take measurements, so my gift was a real surprise. I only needed to touch up a few things myself the first time I put the case on my smartphone, so I will not give any sizes - they can be found on the Internet.

Step 1: Tools and Materials

Tools:

  • 3D printer and laser cutter
  • measuring metal ruler
  • jigsaw
  • belt sander (optional, you can sand with your hands)
  • drilling machine (if you know how to drill with jewelry precision manually, you can use a conventional drill)
  • engraver with a set of nozzles (diamond head, disc cutter, emery nozzle, etc.)
  • various screwdrivers, hammers, sandpaper sheets (from 120 to 400 grit)
  • sharp knife to remove excess glue

materials

  • hardwood sheet, the area of the sheet should be about 2-3 times the surface area of the phone. I used 3mm thick walnut wood, but I think 2mm would be fine too (though then you would have to work with surgical precision), as well as 4mm thick (in which case the case would be unwieldy)
  • thicker wood trimmings for the sides of the case, approximately equal to the thickness of the phone plus 1-2 mm
  • miniature screws and nuts, the appearance of your taste
  • superglue, wood glue

Step 2: Making wood blanks

First, I made a cardboard phone template according to the dimensions I found on the Internet. If you can make the template from a piece of wood a little thinner than a phone, that would be great. Observe the dimensions and align the angles so that you do not have to redo everything later. Of course, if you are confident in your abilities, you can glue the parts right around the phone, but I would not risk it.

From a sheet of wood, cut out two planks larger than the phone by 1 cm. For now, you can not adjust them in size. Mark the board that you like best as the bottom cover of the case.
Then cut the sides (0.75cm wide) out of thicker wood, make sure they are thicker (higher) than your phone. The difference should be small so that after further grinding there is a gap of about 1 mm. Gently glue them on the inside of the lid around the perimeter.

Before gluing the sides, make sure that the phone fits in the case, especially in height. To do this, put the phone inside the workpiece and cover it with a second plank on top, it should lie flat on the sides.

Step 3: Tighten the nuts

Attach the front panel (the board that is not the “lid”) to the workpiece with tape. Draw a rectangle on the board with a pencil and carefully cut it out. Be careful not to cut off the excess - there should be room for four screws at the corners of the case. For the sides, leave a gap of 4-6 mm, for the upper and lower parts - a little less, since we will screw the screws on the sides.

Without removing the tape, drill four holes in the top cover and sides, with a diameter slightly smaller than the thread of the screws. Don't drill through! This is best done on a drilling machine with an indication of the drilling depth. When drilling holes, always drill shallow first, then try on the screw, and then, if necessary, drill deeper.

Countersink the holes so that the heads of the screws are flush with the surface of the cover. Be careful not to drill a hole through by accident!

Step 4: Forming the Border of the Front Panel and Cutting a Hole for the Camera

Based on the parameters found on the Internet, I drew a hole on the top cover of the border that is needed for the microphone, and for the back button, and for the screen, and for the front camera.

Drill a hole inside the hole outline. Remove the jigsaw blade from the mount, thread it through the drilled hole, place the jigsaw blade back into the mount and don't forget to tighten. Cut out the hole along the marked outline. Similarly, make a hole for the flash and camera on the back of the case. While cutting a hole in the back cover, I cut through the top of the case, then just glued it back (pictured). It is not necessary to glue this piece back, as there is a power button under it, and a hole makes it easier to access it. I decided to return the piece of wood to its place and make another button.

Sand the edges of the cut holes, with different nozzles for the engraver, you can make the cut angle completely square or, conversely, round it.

In the last photo you can see that I rounded off the corners of the case (with a belt sander). This should only be done when the top cover is screwed into place, only in this case the contour of the rounding of the covers will match. Rounding the corners is not necessary at all, but this shape repeats the shape of the phone inside and visually makes the case much less bulky.

Sand the entire surface of the case first with 200 grit sandpaper, then 400 grit sandpaper to make it completely smooth. I did not use any finishing composition, because I did not have it. Perhaps I would use oil or some non-toxic compound, because the case will be in constant contact with the hands and face.

Step 5: Making holes in the side walls and buttons

You can make buttons out of whatever you want.
Using dimensional data from the Internet, I drilled holes in the bottom, top and side walls of the case - for the speaker, volume buttons, power button and mute button, for the microphone, for the USB and headphone jacks.

Before you start drilling, be sure to insert a piece of wood into the body (in the first photo) so that the wood does not split.

Once you've drilled the holes, you can find something creative for the buttons.
Three buttons are quite simple - I sanded the height from the head of the bolt so that there was practically no hole for the screwdriver, then cut the threaded part to a suitable height with a disk cutter (you can also use a hacksaw). Glue a small nut onto the hat with superglue. I did not glue the nut on the volume up button, because I wanted it to be different from the other two. Before you start gluing, try on the phone case to make sure the holes line up with the buttons. You may need to tweak the edges of the holes a bit so that they don't overlap the surface of the buttons and don't press them all the time.

The mute button was a little tricky to make - I needed to make a lever, so I made it from a piece of wood about the size of a match (pictured), with a small notch to grip the switch. I made another recess deeper and a hole, sanded the lever a little to fit the size of the recess.

The lever needs support. For this I used a bent nail. It should pass in the middle of the thickness of the side wall. You need to somehow contrive and be able to drill holes, pass a nail through them and put a lever on it along the way.

If this seems too tricky to you, you can simply cut a hole in the case so that you can easily press the button with your finger.

Step 6: Completion

Place the phone in a makeshift case and tighten the screws.
If the phone dangles a little inside the case, place a folded piece of paper under the phone.

Hi all! Today I want to tell you how to make a phone case out of wood. There are three ways: cut on a CNC machine, glue from parts cut on a laser machine and do it yourself with a carpentry tool. The latter method is more accessible, and it will be discussed further.

For manufacturing, you will need a wooden block a little larger than the size of the phone.

Saw off two thin plates from it

then cut the sides a little thicker than the phone

Put the phone on one board and glue the edges with a gap of about 1mm along the edges, remove the phone and glue the top cover.

After 24 hours, the glue polymerizes and you can start processing.

I will not describe all the subtleties of carpentry, since everyone has their own approach to business and a different tool.

I got three

If desired, you can glue fabric or leather inside, make a fastener and apply a pattern.

On the left, made of amaranth, coated with colorless oil.

Medium oak, aged 5 minutes in Rubio Monocoat black oil

Right oak, aged 15 minutes in Rubio Monocoat clear oil

On the one that I liked more, I made a leather clasp with a sewn-in neodymium magnet,

and he drowned a magnet in the body with an arc and glued it to Poksipol.

You can make it even easier: Buy a plastic cover for the phone and glue it to it

a plate of wood

Simple and cute. And most importantly, handmade!

You can use different types of wood and types of oils.

If you have any ideas for improvement, please send me an email. [email protected]

And also write the approximate cost for the cover and lining. Maybe I'll start mass production))

Thank you for attention!
