continuous- extended time

Unlike Simple tense, which is used when the action is meant as a fact, the action is regular, ordinary, action "in general", and we are not interested in its duration.

1. The most basic semantic meaning of the Extended Time:

It is used when it is necessary to emphasize that an action is in progress at some point in time:

Now I am writing. - That is, the action called "writing" is happening at the moment. I am writing now.

Yesterday, when you called, I was writing a letter. - That is, the action called "writing" took place (lasted) at the very moment of the call.Yesterday, when you called me, I was writing a letter.

Tomorrow don't call me at five o'clock because I'll be watching TV. - That is, the action called "watching TV" will be in progress (lasts) for five hours.Don "t call me tomorrow at 5 o" clock, because I will be watching TV.

As can be seen from the examples given, a specific moment in time when an action took place can be expressed either by a direct indication of time ( at 5 o " clock - at five o'clock), or temporary adverbs (such as now - now) or another action expressed by Simple ( Simple) time (when you called me).

2. The affirmative form of the Continuous tense is formed: auxiliary verb to be in the required form plus a semantic verb with the ending - ing.

I am writing.

You are writing

He is writing.

They are writing.

I was writing.

You were writing.

He was writing

They were writing.

I will be writing.

You will be writing.

He will be writing.

They will be writing.

3. Negative form is formed: verb to be in the desired form plus a negative particle NOT plus semantic verb with the ending - ing . (Note that in the future Continuation the negative particle not is placed after will . This rule about negation is easier to remember using the term "first auxiliary verb" - negation is formed using the particle not , which is placed after the first auxiliary verb. In the past and present, there is only one auxiliary verb, that is, it is also the first. And in the future there are two of them - will be , so we put after the first - that is, after will)

I am not writing.

You are not (aren "t) writing.

He is not (isn't) writing.

I was not (wasn "t) writing.

You were not (waren "t) writing.

I will not (won't) be writing.

You will not (won't) be writing.

4. The question is formed by setting ("removal") of the auxiliary verb to be in the correct form before the subject. (Note that in the future tense "taken out" will , not be ). (Or again, the "rule of the first auxiliary verb" - in the interrogative form, the first auxiliary verb is placed before the subject. Remember this rule of the "first auxiliary verb" - it will also come in handy when studying other tenses, such as the Perfect.)

Examples of questions with answers - short and full:

Am I am writing? - Yes, I am. I am writing./ No, I am not. I am not writing.

Are you writing? - Yes, you are. You are writing./ No, you are not (aren "t). You are not (aren" t) writing.

Is he writing? - Yes, he is. He is writing. / No, he is not (isn "t). He is not (isn" t) writing.

Was I writing? - Yes, I was. I was writing./ No, I was not (wasn "t). I was not (wasn" t) writing.

Were you writing? - Yes, you were. You were writing./No, you were not (weren "t). You were not (weren" t) writing.

Will I be writing? - Yes, I will. I will be writing. / No, I will not (won "t). I will not (won" t) be writing.

Will you be writing? - Yes, you will. You will be writing. / No, you will not (won "t). You will not (won" t) be writing.

Auxiliary material:

Required verb forms to be:

Past tense:

singular was , plural were.

Present tense:

am - singular, first person

is - singular, third person

are - plural of all persons. (Do not forget that in English the second person is always only plural. you are, you were)

Future time:

will be - in modern English for all persons and numbers. (although in classical grammar for the first person singular and plural - shall be . But it is now rarely used)

Spelling rules for verbs with - ing:

1. If the verb ends in -e, it is discarded before - ing:

Smoke-smoking

Hope-hope

Exception: be - being , as well as verbs ending in - ee :

See - seeing, agree - agreeing.

2. The letter y before - ing does not change:

Say - saying

Try - trying.

2. If, when adding - ing , the stressed closed syllable opens, the last consonant of the verb is doubled so that the pronunciation of this syllable does not change:

Put-putting

Get-getting

Now for the strengthening exercises:

2. Make sentences in the Continuous tense from these words, make them in the past, present and future affirmative, negative and interrogative with short answers, adding the necessary circumstances of the time. That is, for each item you will get 9 sentences plus short answers to questions. If you use a "buffer" for the same parts of sentences, then things will go faster.

I was washing my hair yesterday when he came in.

I "ll be washing my hair tomorrow at 8 o" clock, so please, call me at 8.20.
