Only the ascetic herself opposed such veneration in every possible way and did not especially welcome the veneration of her icons. Moreover, until now she has not been officially recognized as a saint, that is, for church people the phrase Saint Martha in the strict sense is not permissible, as well as the veneration of icons. Nevertheless, prayers are possible, and icons, by the grace of the Lord, bring good to people, because, in fact, being canonized as a saint in this situation is nothing more than a formality.

During her relatively short earthly journey (1880-1925), Martha won veneration from a significant number of believers. Even the wife of Emperor Nicholas II came to her for advice and help.

Martha took upon herself the feat of foolishness - voluntary madness. People did not understand the meaning of her actions, many were angry and offended by her - until one day they noticed that sore spot, into which the pebble of the blessed one fell, calmed down and healed.

Matushka quietly and peacefully ended her earthly journey at the age of forty-five, having predicted before that: "I will be buried three times." And so it happened - the first funeral was in the monastery of the Holy Spirit, then (after the Bolshevik terror that had spilled over the country collapsed on the heads of its opponents and allies) a prison was set up in the monastery - and the body of St. Martha was transferred to the Alekseevsky Church, and then - buried at the Central Cemetery of the city of Stalingrad.

Now many hundreds of pilgrims come to the cemetery with prayer and hope. They say that you need to bring a flour product with you - a cracker, a bun, bread, and put it on the grave. After the prayer, you can pick up the bun and eat it yourself, or you can give it to someone, or even leave it on the grave.

Do not make of this pious tradition a cult and witch madness. Although all the fairy tales about necrotic energy in this case do not work - believers who resort to the help of Blessed Martha take the earth from her grave and use it to heal from diseases. Saint Martha, however, like her sister, ardently believed in Jesus Christ even before the resurrection of Lazarus, and with honor brought this faith to the end of her days.

We also know that Saint Martha, together with her sister and brother, as well as Saints Maximinus, Martellus and Cydonius, went to preach Christ in Gaul, where she, 30 years later, died in a hermitage.

In Orthodoxy, Saint Martha is revered in the rank of myrrh-bearing women of the righteous saints.

MARFA Tsaritsynskaya

Martha (there is an opinion that real name women Medvenskaya, although even the worldly name of a woman is not known for certain) was born in 1880 in Tsaritsyn (Volgograd).

The young girl, after graduating from the gymnasium, went to the city of Petersburg, to meet with John of Kronstadt and received a blessing from him.

Father John foresaw that the girl was destined to serve the Lord and blessed her on the difficult path of foolishness for Christ's sake. The future saint ordered her to call herself Martha and give up everything earthly "so that she would walk and remind people of God."

At the end of 1908, after the death of John, Martha returned to Tsaritsyn, where at first she settled in a barn in the courtyard of her parents' house, and then began to spend the night right on the street, in the open air.

According to the townspeople, Martha visited only pious families, preferring the families of simple workers. Like Saint Xenia of Petersburg, they tried to invite Marfa to their home. People began to notice that after her visit, peace reigns in the family, the sick recover, prosperity appears. Catholic prayer to St. Martha in Orthodox lips

The images of the holy sisters Martha and Mary, vividly presented in the Gospels of Luke (Luke 10:38-42) and John (John 11:3-44), are close to the heart of every Christian. They are revered both in Orthodoxy and among Catholics, but in the Roman Church the first of them is called Martha. Thus, the Prayer of St. Martha for the fulfillment of desires, the text of which is given below in the article, which is so popular today among the Orthodox (especially among women), is a direct borrowing from their prayer books.

Savior in the house of pious sisters

What is the reason that the prayer of St. Martha found such fertile ground in Orthodox Russia? To understand this, let's open first of all the 10th chapter of the Gospel of Luke and it will tell us about how two sisters who lived in Bethany - Martha (Martha) and Mary, received Jesus Christ in their house.

The Evangelist narrates that, having entered their house, the Savior, as usual, barely taking a breath after a hard journey, began to preach the Word of God. Hearing His words, Mary, sinking at His feet, listened to the Lord with deep reverence, while her sister, meanwhile, was completely absorbed in the household, wanting to treat the stranger in a worthy manner, and even asked the Lord to send Mary to help her.

In response to this, Jesus, in seemingly simple words, uttered a great truth - the spiritual food with which He saturates all those who listen to Him is incomparably more important for a person than what he eats at a meal, and Mary chose with her heart precisely “the good part ".

The Greatest Christian Virtue

What is the merit of the sisters, which opened the way for them to the crowns of holiness, because in this episode their role is rather passive? This is not true. By their attitude towards the Lord, they testified to the greatest virtue that filled their hearts - faith. They believed in Christ even before the torments on the cross and the resurrection that followed.

Just as unbelief is the gravest mortal sin, so the Lord calls faith in Him the highest virtue of a Christian. This is also evidenced by the fact that in His first - most important commandment He proclaims: "I am the Lord your God ...". It is the Lord that Martha calls Him. That is why the prayer of St. Martha (Martha) is full of such grace-filled power.

Believe, and you will find the Kingdom of Heaven!

Evidence of boundless faith in the Lord is the following episode, given in the 11th chapter of the Gospel of John. Here Martha and Mary turn to Jesus on the day when they suffered the greatest grief - the death of their beloved brother Lazarus. Meeting Jesus, Martha (Martha) uttered the words that opened the way for her to the Kingdom of God: "... I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."

This short phrase is the backbone of all Christianity. Jesus is full boundless love and forgiveness. He is ready, condescending to human weakness, to let go of his unreasonable children their countless sins, demanding nothing in return except faith in His omnipotence. Believe, and the way to the palace of the Son of God will be opened to you.

That is why the prayer of St. Martha for the fulfillment of desire, like any other appeal to her, brings fertile fruits. The Orthodox Church teaches us that none of the saints who have acquired the crown of holiness are endowed with the gift to work miracles. But, being at the Throne of God, they intercede for us, and through our prayers to them, they cry out to the Almighty to send down what they ask.

"Golden legend" from time immemorial

According to legend, the first life of the saint was compiled in Gaul (France) immediately after her death, and was written by a cell attendant named Marcilla. This manuscript was carefully preserved until the 5th century, and then, due to extreme dilapidation, was rewritten again. Traces of the priceless document can be traced up to the 9th century, and then hopelessly lost.

However, the Lord did not allow information about the life of St. Martha to disappear without a trace. A somewhat abridged text of this document has come down to us in the writings of the 13th-century Italian writer and theologian Jacob Voraginsky. His major work entitled "The Golden Legend" includes a story about the life of St. Martha. In the Middle Ages, it was very popular in Western Europe.

Holy Exiles

According to Jacob Voraginsky, who, in turn, refers to the records of the cell attendant Marcilla mentioned above, Saint Martha (Martha) came from a royal family. Her father, named Sirus, once ruled Syria and a number of coastal regions. Neither Martha nor her maternal sister Maria were ever married, and kept their purity and virginity to serve God.

Immediately after the Ascension of Jesus, the persecution of Christians began. Soon the blood of the first martyr, Deacon Stefan, was also shed. These days, St. Martha with her sister Mary, the righteous Maximian and several other followers of Christ, a crowd of unbelievers threw into a fragile boat. Without sails, oars, and even without water, they were betrayed to the will of the waves.

But the evil will of the people was opposed by the greatest goodness of God. At this critical moment, with all persuasiveness, the Lord testified to His good will towards the holy virgin. The boat with the exiles did not die in the depths of the sea, but, guided by the Will of God, safely reached the shores of Gaul (France).

They set foot on the shore in the place where the city of Marseille is located today, but without stopping for a long time, they reached Aix, which has been preserved under the same name to this day. There, Saint Martha was prepared by God to perform her most famous deed, which served as the basis for the dragon to be often depicted on her icons later.

As Marcilla once recorded, in those years, a terrible monster named Tarascus was found in the Rhone River, lying in wait for travelers and devouring them. No matter how much they tried locals to defeat him - nothing worked, and the number of victims grew every day. But, it is known that the Will of God is capable of crushing what brute force retreats before.

No longer relying on weapons, the inhabitants prayed for help to Saint Martha, who tirelessly preached among them the teachings of Christ. The pious maiden, listening to them, sprinkled the monster with holy water, after which it immediately lost its strength and was destroyed.

The place where this event took place became known as Tarascon, and subsequently became widely known thanks to the popular novel by Alphonse Daudet and his hero Tartarin. Saint Martha herself remained there to live, and devout women began to gather to her, soon forming a community, from which a monastery was later formed. In it, the saint, tirelessly indulged in fasting and prayer, and there the Lord vouchsafed her to close her eyes forever.

Veneration of St. Martha (Martha) in Russia

In Russia, Saint Martha is known under the name of Martha. Prayer to her is very strong, since she was among the myrrh-bearing women who followed Christ during his wanderings, and after the crucifixion, who appeared in the early morning at the Tomb to anoint the body with incense. It is believed that she was also a witness to the Savior's suffering on the cross.

In Russia, the veneration of the holy sisters Martha and Mary goes back to the first centuries after the establishment of Christianity. Temples were erected in their honor and monasteries were founded. Widely known, for example, is the Moscow Marfo-Mariinsky Convent of Mercy, founded in 1909, then abolished, and revived today.

Given the role that she was assigned in the gospel scene of the reception of Christ in Bethany, in the host of saints Martha is given the place of the patroness of the household, as well as cooks, servants and waiters. However, this does not mean at all that the prayer to St. Martha for the fulfillment of a wish should concern only these aspects of life. The saint is ready to listen to any requests, as long as they do not go beyond the framework of Christian ethics.

Below is the text of the prayer itself, widely distributed today on the Internet. According to a number of Orthodox priests, it is a translation (and very mediocre) of one of the Catholic prayers, which, however, does not deprive it of grace when read with faith and sincerity. It is given in full, and without any changes.

Prayer of St. Martha in a modern presentation

Here is the text of this prayer:

“Oh Holy Martha, You are Miraculous! I turn to you for help! And completely in my needs, and you will be my helper in my trials! I promise you with gratitude that I will spread this prayer everywhere! I humbly, tearfully ask - comfort me in my worries and hardships! I humbly, for the sake of the great joy that filled your heart, I tearfully ask you to take care of me and my family so that we keep our God in our hearts, and thereby deserve the Saved Almighty Mediation, first of all with the care that now burdens me. (Further desire, for example, help me find a job, etc.) I tearfully ask you, an assistant in every need, conquer hardships the way you defeated the Serpent, until you lay at your feet!

Further, it is recommended to read “Our Father”, “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice ...” and “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit ...”. Of course, there is nothing to object to this, but, here is the categorical statement below that the prayer to St. Martha (Martha) must be said nine times, and only on Tuesdays, is puzzling.

Questions to be answered

Excuse me, but only officials have a “reception on personal matters” once a week, and the saints are ready to listen to our prayers continuously, regardless of the day of the week, month and year. It is also not clear why nine times, and not eight or ten? And further, the promise to spread this prayer smacks of a certain sectarianism.

Older people will surely remember the money invested in them. mailboxes flyers of various homegrown religious brotherhoods. All of them contained dubious prayers, and ended with the requirement, after reading a certain number of times, to pass on to their acquaintances. Those who shied away were promised imminent and inevitable troubles. However, this is just a subjective opinion.

But what is undeniable is that the saint that was discussed in this article was a true disciple and follower of Jesus Christ, which earned herself eternal life and the right to intercede for our needs before the Throne of the Most High. Therefore, we will not follow the texts of foreign prayers, but pray to Saint Martha for the fulfillment of our desires in our own words, and in conclusion, with all sincerity and purity of heart, we will say: “Oh, holy Martha, God's servant, pray to God for us!”
