The driver-mechanic of the airborne combat vehicle (BMD) is part of the BMD crew, reports to the BMD commander, is directly responsible for the technical condition of the material part of the combat vehicle and controls it on the battlefield. He also observes the battlefield, emerging targets, reports them to the commander, provides best conditions for shooting.

The actions of the driver are directly related to the delivery of personnel to the battlefield and the participation BMD crew in the performance of the assigned combat mission. He ensures the efficient use of the equipment entrusted to him, economical consumption of fuel, lubricants, maintains the engine and other mechanisms in good condition.

The activity of the driver is carried out during the preparation and conduct of the landing operation, which imposes additional requirements on him. He must know well the design of parachutes and parachute-rocket systems, perform parachute jumps under various landing conditions, be ready for landing inside the BMD and immediately prepare it for action after landing, take part in the preparation of equipment and weapons for landing, master the techniques hand-to-hand combat, be capable of making a long march over rough terrain.

The activity of the BMD driver is associated with large static and dynamic loads and the processing of a significant amount of information. It operates both independently (when carrying out routine and other work) and as part of a crew (when moving in marching and combat columns, when performing a combat mission).

The specialist spends most of the time together with the crew members inside the armored hull of the BMD, as well as in closed storage facilities (during the period of preventive maintenance). The habitability conditions inside the BMD for a number of factors (noise, vibration, microclimate parameters) exceed the maximum allowable values.

The main labor operations performed by a specialist consist in preparing the material part of the BMD for movement, including immediately after landing, controlling the movement of the BMD and its mechanisms, monitoring their work in a rapidly changing environment.

The most stressful moments in the activity of a driver are landing in a BMD from a flying military transport aircraft, driving a BMD in difficult road conditions, starting the engine after it suddenly stops on the battlefield or in a convoy on the march.

The positions of BMD driver-mechanics are completed by military personnel who have undergone special training in a training military unit.
