What is winter?

When the last multi-colored leaves have finished falling and wrap the earth in their motley carpet, and the gray rain drops give way to chilly cold and the first sparkling snowflakes, winter comes into its own. She reigns for three whole months: timid frosty December, snowy and festive january and, of course, February, famous for its severe cold. In winter, nature sleeps sweetly, wrapped in a blanket of snow and soothed by the discordant but melodic tune of a blizzard. However, this exciting time of the year declares itself not only with a lush cap of snow-white snowdrifts and transparent icicles hanging from the roofs of houses, but also with a temperature that does not rise above zero degrees Celsius and makes it chilly to wrap yourself in warm clothes.

Changes in nature in winter

December

December, which marks the arrival of winter, in contrast to the mild autumn November, already very rarely pampers nature with its thaws. He carefully and gradually prepares for the onset of cold and frost, lowering the temperature column on the thermometer and wrapping everything around with a warm snow blanket. Thanks to such care, many small animals and plants can survive the coming cold, because it is warmer under the snow than outside. Sparkling snowdrifts often reach 30 cm and no longer surrender to the mercy of timid sunlight. The lower the air temperature, the harder the snow and the more sonorous its melodic crunch becomes.

Gradually, the day begins to give up its positions, and the cold December nights are getting longer. Short frosts are already beginning to show their severe character, and a thin crust of ice fetters the movement of meandering rivers. Sometimes December indulges in small thaws and a pleasant increase in temperature, but it can remind you of itself with sharp frosts, and the Arctic winds gradually bring more and more cold and freshness.

In the northern hemisphere, the night of December 22 is the longest of the year, and the day of December 22 is the shortest of the year. In a day winter solstice On December 22, the sun rises to its lowest height above the horizon for the entire year.

With the onset of December, a lot of folk signs about the weather are connected. Here is some of them:

  • If in December the sky is overcast and the clouds hang low, then it is worth waiting for a big harvest next year.
  • If thunder often rumbles this month, then in January there will be very severe frosts.
  • The lack of rain means that spring and summer will also be dry.
  • A lot of snow, hoarfrost and frozen ground signify a good harvest in autumn.
  • If the bullfinches arrived this month, then the winter will be with frost.

In Russia, at the beginning of December, they already began to break through sledge tracks and arranged trekking. From December 9, in the evening, it was worth staying closer to the houses, as the wolves began to come closer to the village.

However, December marks not only the beginning of winter, but also the eager anticipation of the New Year. This holiday, celebrated on the night of December 31 to January 1, is one of the most wonderful days, because it symbolizes not only the beginning of a new year, but also the time of gaining new hopes and aspirations, faith in positive changes and magical events. Each person on this holiday becomes a child and looks forward to the onset of a bewitching fairy tale and the fulfillment of all dreams. The smell of pine needles and the unique taste of tangerines evoke warm memories and makes the heart beat faster in anticipation of miracles.

January

Winter is in full swing in January. She reigns serenely in nature and continues her snowy and frosty procession. Epiphany cold and unique snow crystals create a magical winter fairy tale from the intricate patterns on the windows, they sing about her, whirling in the whirlpool of a blizzard, and boldly look into the cloudless blue sky. The biting frost makes itself felt with clouds of steam from the mouth and a pleasant tingling of the cheeks and nose. All this magic is supported by the temperature already established in the range of -10-30 degrees Celsius. The days are gradually getting longer, and the impenetrable darkness of frosty nights is gradually losing ground. However, the piercing light of the bright sun does not have time to warm the earth, so the stubborn cold claims its rights even stronger and makes the air piercingly frosty. Thanks to this, at night you can admire the clear sky and sparkling diamonds of the stars. The wind does not have such force as in December and does not shake the trees dressed in snow, but only lovingly strokes their tops.

January is famous not only for its bewitching beauty, but also for the onset of important event in the life of Christians - the Nativity of Christ. This bright holiday, celebrated on January 7, is solemnly celebrated by all believers, and their congratulations to each other merge together to the chime of bells.

The days from January 7 to 19 are called Christmas time. They are illuminated by the light of the Nativity of Christ and are perfect for various games, fortune-telling and carols. Most often they guessed on the night of January 13-14. Young girls wanted to know who would be their betrothed, and married women sought to find out what the weather would be like in summer and whether it was worth waiting for a big harvest. Christmas time was also a period of noisy weddings. In Russia, sleigh rides and all kinds of snow fun were organized these days.

According to folk signs about the weather:

  • if on January 21 the south wind blows, then the summer will be rainy, and if on the 23rd there is frost on the haystacks, then the summer will be cool and rainy.

February

With the onset of February, the cloudy gray sky, which continues to wrap the sleeping earth with a soft cap of snow, gradually becomes a little kinder and allows bright sunbeams to often peep through dense clouds. Winter still reminds of itself with the discordant tune of a blizzard and a cheerful carousel of snowflakes swirling with a blizzard, but the premonition of spring gradually begins to enliven everything around. Pink cheeks from the prickly frost gradually begin to warm up with timid solar warmth. The snow is covered with a thin crust and begins to slowly give up, anticipating the approach of spring. The days are getting longer, and the clear sky is increasingly pleasing to the eye with its unique blue.

In the southern regions of Russia, buds appear on willows - the first harbingers of spring, and thawed patches, like messengers, carry the news of its approach. The frosty wind pleasantly pricks the face with small snowflakes, and the chilly frost alternates with long-awaited thaws. However, bewitching snowstorms and stubborn cold will not soon surrender to the mercy of the beautiful spring.

February is associated with many folk signs about the weather.

  • If the weather is very cold and frosty this month, then the summer will be hot.
  • Little snow in February threatens a poor harvest.
  • If thunder rumbles, then it is worth waiting for strong winds.
  • Rainy February speaks of the same spring and summer.
  • Bright stars predict frosts, and dim - thaw.
  • If the frosts in February are very strong, then the winter will be short.

Signs of winter coming

One of the first signs of winter is the appearance of dense, low-hanging clouds. They envelop the sky like a fur blanket and do not allow the sun's rays to break through their veil and delight the earth with their warmth, and the sun is low and already warms not so much. Such clouds are very different from summer, light and cirrus. The winter sky does not please with its colors, but it compensates for this with sparkling snowflakes, neatly, like sparkling silver, covering everything around.

Thick cover of snow is also an important sign of winter. Only at this time of the year, fluffy snowflakes do not melt under the timid rays of the sun, but, gradually increasing, create a reliable snow cover.

Winter is famous for its frosts. Gradually it gets colder. The thin needles of the first frosty winds begin to tingle your cheeks and nose and make you wrap yourself more tightly in winter clothes. Her permanent companions - a hat and mittens - are added to a warm jacket.

Plants and animals are also actively preparing for the onset of winter. Trees and shrubs in anticipation of cold weather and cloudy days shed their leaves. However, this will not last long and in the spring the first small leaves will appear on the branches. Only coniferous trees they do not want to part with their green needles and continue to please them even in winter.

AT winter time little food so some animals hibernate, and those that remain awake grow fluffy and thick fur. A hare, for example, turns white, and a hedgehog and a bear hibernate.

It is also not easy for birds to endure cold and lack of abundant food, so many of them fly away to warmer climes, and the rest adapt to different types stern.

Natural phenomena in winter

At this time of the year there are such interesting and unusual phenomena nature like:

  • Blizzard
  • black ice
  • icicles
  • Frost patterns

A snowstorm arises with the first gusts of wind and, boldly picking up the snow cover, drags it into a mysterious winter dance. This is a very severe natural phenomenon, which is better not to meet on the way. The snowstorm boldly disposes of the snowy landscape and disposes of fluffy snowdrifts at will. Most often this happens in the middle of winter, when frost and cold rule their ball.

Black ice, like a sweet winter dream, fetters reservoirs and covers with a thin crust of ice not only the continuous flow of rivers, but all roads. This happens if after rain or sleet the temperature column drops below zero. Ice on the rivers hinders navigation, but gives wide scope for all kinds of winter entertainment such as sledding, skating or skiing.

Another interesting phenomenon winters are icicles. They, like ice daggers, pierce the ground as they fall and shatter into hundreds of sparkling fragments. Icicles form when snow begins to melt on rooftops or other flat objects, and the resulting water freezes at night in low temperatures.

Frosty patterns, like frost, are an incredible lace creation of winter. Their bizarre pattern and bewitching beauty leave a lot of room for imagination and immerse in snow fairy tale. This is made possible by the formation of ice crystals that settle on the irregularities of the glass. They overlap each other and create pictures of incredible beauty.

Winter is not only a beautiful time of the year, but also a very unusual one. It's like a big mystery to be solved. For example:

  • snow is a real work of art and there are no two identical snowflakes in the world.
  • Snowflakes are 95% air, which is why they fall to the ground so slowly.
  • In Antarctica, you can find purple, pink or red snow.
  • AT different countries and parts of the world ice has different temperature. For example, the coldest ice is found in the Antarctic glaciers and reaches -60 degrees Celsius, while the warmest (0 degrees) is on the peaks of the Scandinavian Mountains and the Alps.
  • More than half of the inhabitants of the Earth have never seen real snow at all.
  • On February 18, 1979, snowfall was recorded in the Sahara desert, and this is one of the hottest places on the planet.
  • Enjoy yourself warm winter possible in North Sudan. There, at this time of the year, the temperature rarely drops below +40 degrees.
  • One of the coldest and most uninhabitable places is Antarctica. In winter, the air temperature there averages -70 degrees. And at Vostok station, which is located in Antarctica, a temperature of -89.2 degrees was recorded.

Winter is a wonderful and fabulous time of the year, when, despite the short day and frosty air, life does not stop, but is filled with new light and sound. The snow-white cover of snow and snowflakes sparkling in the sun, unique patterns on glass and ice crust that bind rivers and lakes are endlessly pleasing to the eye. The prickly frost, lovingly rubbing your cheeks, reminds you of how many games there are on fresh air hides this time of year and makes you freeze in anticipation of the New Year holidays.

Beliefs in different regions of Russia

Weather signs vary depending on the region of Russia, since each region has its own climatic conditions: in Krasnodar Territory winter begins no earlier than January, and in Yakutia - in October. The main signs in different regions:

  1. 1. in the Kuban determine the weather in winter by the behavior of pets: cats lick their paws and do not leave the stove - cold weather will come soon.
  2. 2. In Bashkiria people believe that Cold winter promises early flowering bird cherry and a generous summer harvest.
  3. 3. In the Ryazan and Moscow regions the climate is practically the same, so the beliefs in these regions are the same: snow-covered St. Nicholas - for a fruitful autumn.
  4. 4. In the Leningrad region they believe that windy weather on the eve of the old New Year portends dry summer months, but the apple harvest will be rich.
  5. 5. In Tatarstan productivity is associated with the thickness of ice on the river: the thicker the ice layer, the more abundant the harvest of vegetables and fruits.
  6. 6. In the Urals a thaw in the winter months is associated with stormy summers and poor grain harvests.

Russian winter lives in three months - says a folk saying. According to the astronomical calendar, it lasts from the winter solstice to spring equinox. Meteorologists in winter consider the entire period when average daily temperature air below zero degrees. And the folk calendar claims that winter begins with frosts and ends with drops.

Every time we note: when the season changes, something new appears in nature, something first. So on the threshold of winter - the first frost, the first snowstorm, the first sparkling snowdrift ...

Everything was quiet in nature in anticipation of cold weather. And although even in summer and autumn, with the help of signs, data were obtained on the nature of the upcoming winter, the peasant has his own opinions on this matter - he must check everything himself. He will go out in the morning to ask for food for a cow and look at the sky along the way, notice how domestic animals and the feathered population - sparrows, tits, bullfinches - behave. He will think about it, go into the dressing room, where he has a dry spruce twig, and give out his forecast for the coming day, or even for the whole week. And what is interesting: this old-fashioned forecast is almost always justified.

Clouds go against the wind - to the snow. The sun sets in the clouds - to the snowfall. Clouds are floating low - expect a cold.

Smoke from the pipes in a column - to the cold.

A foggy circle near the sun or broken near the moon - to snowstorms.

Red fire in the stove and firewood burn with a bang - be severe frost.

Here a quiet breeze pulled from the north, and after it blurry clouds appeared on the horizon - to be snow. By night it is stronger. The weak draft in the furnace and the smoke from the chimneys, which swirls and spreads, leans to the ground without wind, will tell you the same.

You go out to the river, and there is water on the ice - expect rain or great heat. But the people also noticed something else: before the frost, the water in the rivers rises. Contradiction? No, water never comes out on the ice before frost, but the hole is full of water.

Before the cold, the stars shine brightly in the night, in the morning the dawn is always bright. But if you hear thunder and see lightning, then expect a storm.

During the day it was very cold, but in the evening it suddenly got warmer. Do not rejoice - a long cold is still ahead.

Live barometers will inform you about the onset of severe cold weather.

There will be severe frost if: the cat is looking for warmth;

a cat in a ball - frost on the threshold;

chickens in the yard twist their tails;

geese flap their wings, tuck one leg under them;

indoor birds subside;

in the morning the titmouse screams loudly;

in one nest you will suddenly see several squirrels;

the crow hides its nose under its wing;

wolves howl near dwellings.

If you see a dog rolling in the snow, expect a snowfall soon;

“There will be a snowstorm at night: the dog is wallowing in the snow.”

The dog curls up into a ball and lies in a ball - in the cold.

The cat washes, licks its paw - to the bucket, sits in the stove - to frost, scrapes the floor - to the wind and blizzard, lies belly up - to warmth.

One of these signs was reflected in his poem by A. A. Fet:

Mother! Look out the window

Know that yesterday it was not for nothing that the cat

Washed the nose

There is no dirt, the whole yard is dressed,

Brightened, whitened

Apparently it's cold.

Before a bad weather, a cat reaches for the water and laps it more than usual.

The whole flock of crows croaked - to the frost;

arranged a round dance in the sky - to the snowfall;

sit on the ground - to the thaw;

sit on the lower branches of trees - wait for the wind.

Magpie flies near housing, climbs under the eaves to the blizzard.

For two or three days, our closest neighbor in housing, a sparrow, feels frost. It is January outside, and he suddenly started collecting various rags, feathers, threads - as if he was going to build a new nest. So he does before the onset of great cold weather.

Before a snowfall, chickens begin to pluck. But during the frost, the smoke squinted, arched like a rocker - which means that the frosts will weaken.

Look at the windows: suddenly, during the frost, they burst into tears, flowed from the window sills - which means that tomorrow it will be warmer. People always expected a thaw if:

during the frost rustled the forest;

during frost, the squirrel leaves the nest and descends from the tree;

the sparrows chirped together;

a bullfinch flew to the window;

fog descended to the ground.

In winter, the horse will not lie down on the ground, unless, of course, it is healthy, but before the thaw it almost always lies down, and then snowfall was soon expected.

Often people say that what winter is, summer and are like that. What will they tell us about this? folk tales about winter?

Winter warmth, summer cold.

If it is cold and dry in winter, it is dry and hot in summer.

Blizzards in winter - bad weather in summer.

A lot of frost on the trees - there will be a lot of honey.

Interesting observation of indoor flowers. In winter, before warming and snow, droplets of water appear on the tips of the leaves of callas.

Numerous signs about a particular season have evolved not only for centuries - millennia, and each nation has contributed to the treasury of signs. Today, without any problems, we can find out the weather forecast for the near future, and, if desired, for a month, or even six months in advance.

But in spite of everything high tech and a sufficiently high accuracy of forecasts, we, with bated breath, listen to folk signs and check whether it will come true or not. Either the mystery of the Russian soul, or just features climatic conditions led to the fact that winter signs cause a special thrill.

And this is not surprising - after all, winter predicts summer and gives clues about what the harvest will be like.

Winter signs were of great importance in people's lives, passed down from generation to generation, supplemented by new and more accurate ones. To acquaint with numerous signs began from childhood.

cold winter evenings by the light of a torch, children were often gathered together and told them about the importance of signs. For better memorization, most signs about winter were formed into proverbs.

What are the omens?

All signs were divided into long-term and short-term. Long-term gave a forecast for the spring and summer. Short-term folk omens made it possible to predict the weather for the near future of winter.

Hunters, guided by signs, decided to go hunting or not, travelers knew whether or not to go to long way. For example, a chicken standing on one leg portends frosty weather in the coming days.

From the horses sleeping standing in the stall, one could also guess that there was a severe frost ahead. Winter signs on short term were just as important as long-term ones, because with the advent of winter, even harsh, life did not stop.

The harbingers of frost were also signs that we pay attention to today.:

  • there are no clouds, and the north wind blows;
  • smoke from the chimney is a pillar;
  • there will be frost if there is a pale moon in the sky, surrounded by a halo;
  • it seems like the stars are twinkling.

Warm and sunny weather they promised fluffy frost on the branches of trees and bands of clouds in the sky. Heavy snowfall with "shaggy" snowflakes, misted windows promised clear weather. The ice cracking underfoot spoke of the rapid end of the frost.

There is no wind, and the smoke from the chimney, as if spreading along the ground, is leading to snowfall. The dark sky in the morning, despite the fact that the snow had stopped falling yesterday, also foreshadowed a snowfall.

The beginning of the thaw could be predicted by such signs:

  • water appeared on the surface of the ice, despite the frost;
  • there is almost no draft in the stove, the heat does not hold, and the fire is almost white;
  • bullfinch outside the window;
  • sparrows chirp noisily and cheerfully.

Most accurate forecast the weather gave observation of the evening sunset:

  • the setting sun is red - to be a strong snowstorm;
  • clouds floating across the sky against the wind - towards the snow;
  • clouds came from the north - do not wait for heat.

All the sparrows hid somewhere, but the magpie flies near the dwelling - frosty days await. Clear and stable weather could be judged by the color of the sky - it should be clear blue color. We noticed a squirrel that left the nest and descended to the ground - to be warm.

Attention was also paid to the behavior of domestic animals, because it is known that animals feel weather changes much earlier than humans.

Most of these observations are associated with a cat, and the prevailing signs are still true today.:

  • the cat climbed onto the stove - wait for the frost;
  • for no reason at all, scrape the floor - to a blizzard;
  • decided to scratch the wall - to bad weather;
  • lay down on the very passage belly up - to be warm.

Winter signs for a short time were also of great importance for children, quickly memorizing proverbs, they could figure out what the weather would be like in the near future without prompting from adults. Therefore, they knew whether or not it was worth playing games on the street.

Longer-term forecasts could be obtained by looking at the night month - for this one did not even have to leave the hut. The gently sloping month foreshadowed that it would snow for about thirty days. A fat yellow month in the sky is a sign of a slushy and wet winter.

By appearance month and moon could determine the weather for the near future. We noticed a reddish moon in the night sky - expect wet snow tomorrow, or even rain.

Long term omens

Winter predicts summer, and summer predicts winter. On this occasion, there is a well-known saying: prepare a sleigh in the summer, and a cart in the winter.

Summer weather with almost 100% certainty could be predicted by how winter is:

  • warm winter - wait for a cold summer;
  • constant blizzards, blizzards - get ready for summer bad weather;
  • harsh and frosty winter - the promise of a hot summer.

Each month of winter is rich in its signs.

What will December tell us?

St. George's Day in Russia was celebrated twice a year: December 9 and May 6 (according to the new style). These days were respectively called Cold Yuri and Warm Yuri. If there was a lot of snow on St. George's Day in December, the grass will already sprout by the day of warm Yury.

The day of St. Andrew the First-Called is celebrated on December 13th. On this day, it was worth going and listening to the water: the murmur is quiet, almost indistinguishable - even winter is ahead, and if the murmur is loud, clearly audible - expect snowstorms, blizzards and other snowy storms.

January forecasts

Winter folk omens in January could tell what the harvest will be in summer.

  • The edges of the roofs are framed with long icicles - summer will bring a good harvest.
  • If the winter frosts were the strongest in Epiphany, expect a rich harvest.

Frosts in January - to hot and dry July. Heavy snowfalls in January - numerous rains in July. If the south wind blows on January 21, there will be many strong thunderstorms in the summer. Warm day on January 24 - by early spring, cold day - late spring.

signs of february

Wet snow in February - summer will be rainy. Little snowy February - to dry and hot August. But special attention was paid to the wind in February. Strong and cold constant winds promised an excellent harvest.

If the bright sun shines on the first day, you should wait early spring. The wind on Efremov's day (February 10) said that the summer would be damp.

When the Candlemas (February 15) came, they closely followed the sun. If the setting sun peeked out from behind the clouds - true omen: the harsh winter has come to an end. But if the sun could not be seen, it was constantly behind the clouds - winter is not going to recede.

In fact, there were much more signs of winter time - each province and volost had its own signs of certain events. And this is understandable - winter conditions are different everywhere.
