Pedagogical State University named after V.M. Shukshina began its history back in 1939, when a teacher's institute was formed. BSPU is currently a modern higher educational institution, which has at its disposal more than 40 buildings, many of which are monuments of history and architecture late XIX- the beginning of the XX century. The university has two nine-story dormitories, a residential building for employees, a stadium, a youth center "Kruiz" and a student cafe, a recreation center on Lake Kanonersky.

The structure of the university also includes a branch in the city of Belokurikha and a college of information technology.

Educational work is provided by more than 330 highly qualified teachers, among whom 40 have degree doctors of sciences, 168 - candidates of sciences, 45 were awarded the title of " Honorary Worker higher vocational education”, more than 50 - “Excellence in public education”.

The university is successfully developing international activities. Scientific relations have been established with the leading universities of the country, including the Russian State Pedagogical University. A.I. Herzen (St. Petersburg), Barnaul State Pedagogical University, Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, as well as universities in Canada, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Iran, China. Many teachers and students have completed training, internships or defended dissertations abroad.
