  • Most of the country's special forces are subordinate to the IDF - the Israel Defense Forces, part - to the Israeli police and special services. All special forces regularly participate in hostilities and real combat operations. Most special forces are staffed by conscripts. The special forces of the Nakhshon Prison Service and the anti-terrorist units YAMAM and LOTAR Eilat are recruited on a professional basis. For service in special forces, a medical profile of "97" (the highest) is required. Approximately six months before the draft, conscripts who are suitable for health reasons are sent an offer to go through “gibush” (“rallying” - Hebrew) - selection for service in special forces. Gibush are held on a voluntary basis, only those who wish. Over the course of 2-3 days, gibbush candidates perform various tests of physical and intellectual fitness for service - in a stressful environment, in conditions of hunger, fatigue, lack of time and sleep. People who are able to endure difficulties and work in a team are identified. Those who passed the selection are called up to the appropriate units. In Sayeret Matkal, Shaldag, Maglan and Shayetet-13, for the course of pilots and for the course of naval officers, gibbush is carried out separately for each of the units, for the rest of the units, the gibbush is common, which unit is called up to BAKUM (military registration and enlistment office). For service in Sayeret Matkal and for courses for pilots and naval officers, gibush can be held during the week. Those who did not pass can go gibbush to other units. To serve in these units (where there is a separate gibbush) a certain level of clearance (“sivug bithoni”) is required, the prerequisites are living in Israel for more than 5 years, and the absence of relatives abroad. Only children in the family ("ben yakhid") are not accepted, as an exception - with the written consent of the recruit's parents. In reconnaissance infantry brigades (Golani, Givati, Tsankhanim, Nahal and Kfir), gibbush is carried out after the call, inside the unit, before the course of a young fighter (“tironut”). For service in the units "Psagot" and "TIBAM" requires a specialized higher education received before the call (a corresponding delay is provided before the call - "atuda academy"). Service in special forces is extremely honorable and prestigious; it guarantees a "worthy place in life" after demobilization. Conscripts who dream of getting into them begin to prepare for gibushu on their own back in their school years.

Armed with all types of the most powerful weapons that can be carried manually. The personnel of the deep reconnaissance companies attached to each corps are armed and trained similarly to the Rangers, although they are not formally related to the Special Operations Command. The regiment is subordinate to USASOC.

The first operational detachment of special forces "Delta"(First Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta aka 1st SFOD-D) is an operational detachment of the US Army. Created in 1977. Moreover, at first it was supposed to create anti-terrorist groups in the United States on the basis of the Green Berets, but the high command of the US Armed Forces decided to create new forces. Based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The detachment consists of 3 battalions. It is completed with the best fighters of rangers and special forces. It is part of the JSOC - Joint Special Operations Command, one of the components of US SOCOM along with the Army, Naval, Air Force and ILC command. It is known that the "Charlie" platoon of the "Delta" detachment participated in the operation in Mogadishu (1993), in the operation "Acid Gambit" to free an American citizen. Consolidated instead of DEVGRU in JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command - Joint Special Operations Command), called the Combat Applications Group (CAG).

160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment "Night Stalkers"(Special Operations Air Regiment) - an army aviation unit operating in the interests of the American special forces and MTR. Equipped with helicopters. It can also act as an independent combat unit. Part of USSOCOM.

SEAL- MTR of the US Navy, in the media are often called "fur seals" or "seals". It is part of NAVSOC, which in turn is subordinate to USSOCOM (like the MTR Commands of other branches of the armed forces), however, it is not directly subordinate to USSOCOM.

Naval Special Warfare Development Group (NSWDG) or DEVGRU (DEVelopment GRoUp) - the former SEAL Team Six, formed by Richard Marchenko. Together with the CAG, it is one of the two main counter-terrorism units of the US SOF, under the command of USSOCOM.

US Marine Force Recon (FORECON)- Intelligence of the USMC is considered the elite of an elite branch of the military. The first Marine intelligence units were formed during World War II and were called "raiders" (raiders). In 2001, during the anti-terrorist operation in Afghanistan, the fighters of this special unit captured the airport of the city of Kandahar, which ensured the safe landing of the main allied forces. The main task of reconnaissance of the ILC is to conduct covert reconnaissance operations at a considerable distance from the coast. ILC intelligence conducts its operations only in favor of the Corps - Force Recon does not report directly to USSOCOM.

United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC)- intelligence units of the USMC, under the command of MARSOC (Marine Special Operations Command) (hence, under USSOCOM). Unlike FORECON, it is a division of the ILC, directly subordinate to USSOCOM.

Special forces have become an integral attribute of any modern army and the police. The most complex and non-standard tasks of freeing hostages, protecting VIPs, destroying especially dangerous terrorists and special operations abroad fall on the shoulders of the special forces. The first prototypes of special forces units appeared during the Second World War, it was the German Brandenburg division. Now there is an absentee competition between countries, who has the best special forces, where the main role here is played not by equipment, but by training people who are ready to perform any task in the most extreme conditions. Meet the ten best special forces in the world.

10. Alpha (Russia)

The Russian special unit Alpha was created in 1973 under the KGB of the USSR. It became known about him after the storming of the presidential palace in Kabul, destroying almost all the people in the building. In 1985, 4 Soviet diplomats were kidnapped in Beirut, one of whom was immediately killed. The release of the hostages was taken up by Alpha, who found the relatives of the organizers of the kidnapping and liquidated them by sending such a peculiar message to the terrorists. Recent times are mainly used for anti-terrorist (school in Beslan and the terrorist act on Dubrovka, better known as Nord-Ost) and special operations inside the country, which are almost always accompanied by numerous victims. By the way, this is one of the few special forces operating on the principle of "destroy everyone", and not "save alive at any cost."

9. GIGN (France)

The French special forces unit GIGN (Groupe d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale) was created after the resonant terrorist attack of 1972 in Munich, during Olympic Games when several dozen hostages died in the Olympic village. Plus, a year before that, there had been a prison riot in France with numerous victims. GIGN specializes in counter-terrorism operations and hostage rescue. The most famous operations of the French special forces were the rescue of 30 hostage children in Djibouti in 1976, the arrest of war criminals in Bosnia, special operations against Somali pirates and, of course, the rescue of passengers on Air France flight AF8969 in Marseille in 1994. The number of GIGN is about 400 people.

8.SSG (Pakistan)

In 1956, the leadership of the Pakistani army created its own detachment for special operations SSG (Special Services Group), based on the structure of the British SAS and American green berets. Only one in four applicants become SSG fighters who complete a nine-month training course that includes hand-to-hand combat and survival in extreme conditions. SSG is ready to perform any task in the mountains, jungle, desert and under water. During the Cold War, SSG fighters were trained by American instructors and operated in conjunction with US Special Forces. In the 80s, Pakistani special forces fighters acted together with the Mujahideen in Afghanistan against the Soviet army. Then, according to unconfirmed reports, they actively acted in the territories disputed with India. Recently, the SSG has been mainly involved in anti-terrorist operations in Pakistan, so in 2009 they conducted a hostage rescue operation at the police academy and army headquarters.

7. Sayeret Matkal (Israel)

The Israeli special forces Sayeret Matkal was created at the General Staff in 1957, where only people with a good physical shape and a high level of intelligence are selected. Candidates undergo an eighteen-month training course that includes infantry training, paratrooper training, anti-terrorist operations and intelligence training. Since the 60s, Israeli special forces have taken part in several dozen special operations in different parts of the world. The most famous operation carried out by the Sayeret Matkal fighters is Yonatan, also known as Entebbe. In 1976, Palestinian militants hijack a passenger plane that landed near the capital of Uganda, Kampala, taking 83 people with Israeli passports hostage. 100 people participated in the storming of the airport, but a strike group of 29 people, consisting entirely of Sayeret Matkal commandos, destroyed most of the terrorists.

6. Delta Force (USA)

The 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta unit (translated into Russian as the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment Delta), better known as Delta Force, was created in 1977 to conduct anti-terrorist and covert operations, reconnaissance and hostage rescue. The British SAS were taken as a role model, moreover, the person who stood at the origins of the creation of the Delta Force worked closely with representatives of the British special forces for a long time. Former Green Berets and Rangers are usually taken here, of which only 1 in 10 pass the tests.

5. GSG 9 (Germany)

The German unit GSG 9 specializing in anti-terrorist and special operations under the Ministry of the Interior was created in 1973, exactly one year after the Munich tragedy, when 11 Israeli athletes were terrorists during the Olympic Games. I use GSG 9 to free hostages, destroy terrorists, neutralize extortionists, protect important people and conduct sniper operations. Over the entire period of its existence, more than 1500 successful operations have been carried out.

4. JTF2 (Canada)

The Canadian Special Forces JTF2 (Joint Task Force 2) under the Ministry of Defense was created in 1993, the number of which was increased after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The main task of this unit is to conduct anti-terrorist and special operations, as well as engage in the protection of VIPs. JTF2s were deployed to guard heads of state during the 2010 Winter Olympics, rescue hostages in Iraq and hunt down Serb snipers in Bosnia. Also, Canadians, together with the American Navy SEAL, conducted special operations in Afghanistan, and which were so secret that the Prime Minister of Canada did not know for several years that JTF2 were actively fighting in Afghanistan.

3. EKO Cobra (Austria)

The Austrian anti-terrorist unit EKO Cobra was established in 1978 under the Ministry of the Interior. In Austria, the idea of creating special forces under the police arose in 1972 after the terrorist attack in Munich in 1972 during the Olympics, when 11 Israeli athletes were killed. EKO Cobra is mainly engaged in anti-terrorist operations. All fighters of the unit take mandatory courses in shooting, hand-to-hand combat, combat tactics, explosives and scuba diving. EKO Cobra is the only special forces unit in the world that neutralized terrorists in a flying plane before it landed on the airfield. This happened in 1996, when the criminals demanded to change the course of a civilian aircraft, on which there were four employees of EKO Cobra and were neutralized within a few minutes.

2.Navy SEAL (USA)

The US Navy SEAL, also known as the SEALs, formed in 1962, has become a true legend after audacious operations over the past few years in Iraq and Afghanistan. Particularly resonant was Operation Neptune Spear in 2011, during which he was killed by terrorist number one, Osama bin Laden, in a villa in Pakistan. All recruits of the unit undergo a training course during the year, where the majority is eliminated already at the first stage during general physical training, where the emphasis is on push-ups, squats, running and swimming. After that, passing highly specialized training like explosives, reconnaissance, etc.

1. SAS (UK)

The best special forces unit in the world is the British SAS (Special Air Service, SAS), created back in 1941, which has become a role model when creating similar units in other countries. Initially, the units were created for actions in the rear of the Italian and German troops in North Africa, eventually transforming into an anti-terrorist detachment for operations both inside and outside the country. All SAS candidates, and these are mostly skydivers, must make a 40-mile forced march with full gear in 20 hours, then swim 2 miles in 1.5 hours and run 4 miles in 30 minutes, and this is only the first part of the test. Further into the jungle, where they must demonstrate survival skills and finally endure a 36-hour interrogation, where they are trying to break the will of the recruits. In addition to combined arms training, SAS fighters take various courses under the guidance of instructors from MI5 (security service) and MI6 (foreign intelligence service). The SAS made a name for itself in 1980 with a successful assault on the Iranian embassy in London and freed the hostages.

The desire to know who has the right to be called the best in a particular field seems to be inherent in man by nature. Hence the numerous competitions in completely different disciplines, various ratings and TOPs. But what about when it comes to those who are already considered the elite. And is it possible to choose the most elite of them with a certain accuracy?

At the end of June, the American edition of Business Insider ranked the strongest special forces in the world that perform the most difficult and delicate tasks. When compiling it, the authors took into account the reputation of each unit, the most famous operations, the quality of training and the rigidity of the selection. The eight places in order of ascending the podium were distributed as follows: Pakistan Army Special Forces Group; special naval forces of Spain; department "A" of the Central Security Service of the FSB of Russia; special forces of the French gendarmerie GIGN; special forces of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces "Sayeret Matkal"; British SAS and SBS; United States Navy SEALs.

According to the rules of sports

Russian military experts greeted this rating with skepticism. For example, Ivan Konovalov, director of the Center for Strategic Studies, believes that its compilers simply wanted to kiss the States:

“It is clear that the Business Insider rating is politically biased, while it is absolutely incomprehensible how the Americans compiled it. ... in theory, if you make an objective rating of special forces, then Russian and British should share the first place. And even then - the British special forces have lost a lot in recent years, they are simply followed by the glory of past years.

In principle, there is nothing surprising in the attempt to put American special forces in best light, along the way belittling the experience and skills of other, in particular Russian, fighters. This kind of thing happens everywhere.

So, five years ago, the FSB department “A” that got into the American rating participated in the Super SWAT International Round-Up competitions, which are held annually in the state of Florida. Among the 72 teams, the majority was represented by the same American police special forces. Only 12 came from other countries: Russia, Hungary, Brazil, Germany, Sweden, Kuwait.

The geographic constraint of the event is explained, among other things, by the fact that representatives of Florida frankly condemn even units from other states, to say nothing of foreign guests. The fighters of the Russian Alpha who participated in the competition recall that they really tried to fine them undeservedly more than once. And despite this, the Russian team managed to take the top lines according to the results of the exercises, and even come first in the last race.

Competitions that are held outside the United States are even more interesting. In 2013, a team of veterans of Russian units (including Department A of the FSB and special forces of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs) on their own initiative decided to face their foreign colleagues for the King of Jordan Cup. Then everything went off without serious claims to refereeing, and, despite the victory Chinese special forces, Russian veterans surprised the audience with their endurance, and showed the best result in the sniper exercise. This is provided that they were opposed by active members of the special forces, often twice as young as the members of our team.

“I think that if we brought an active unit to these competitions: “Alpha”, “Vympel”, “Vityaz? - any of these units would be guaranteed the first place!” - Colonel of "Alpha" Sergey Vasilenko assessed the result then.

His predictions came true two years later. This time, it was not veterans who came to Jordan, but a combined team formed from quite a full-time fighters of the special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Chechen Republic. As a result - the title of champions, and the representatives of other countries left behind, including China, which had been in the lead for the previous two years.

By the way, the American special forces at similar events far from their native shores and cool orange juice do not show themselves from the very better side. At last year's competition in Kazakhstan, the US team withdrew on the first day, not wanting to give all the best "in the heat and in difficult conditions."

Problem of methodology

We must pay tribute, such competitions are not at all indicative on a global scale, since not all special forces take part in them (especially annually), and many exercises may not fully correspond to the tasks that a particular unit is designed to solve in a real battle .

However, the various ratings, compiled in the manner of what Business Insider published, are even less objective. And there are several reasons for this.

Firstly, it is impossible to determine whom and with whom to compare. In most countries there are police special forces, there are special forces subordinate to the ministries of defense, there are those who carry out the tasks of the special services. At the same time, the nature of the tasks for which each of these organizations is responsible differs from state to state. In its TOP, the American edition mixes the FSB special forces into a single heap, smashing terrorists inside the country; military unit "Navy SEALs", which performs reconnaissance and sabotage operations in war time behind enemy lines; the British SAS, working both on assignments from the army and MI6 intelligence; GIGN, subordinate to the Ministry of Defense and the police.

Secondly, special forces are not a tank. They do not have clear characteristics such as the thickness of the armor, the range and accuracy of the shot, or top speed from which the best sample could be determined. It is rather the crew of the tank, which, other things being equal, will win the battle. It all depends on the level of training, which can only be determined by putting one unit against another in a real battle, or at least its simulation. However, here again everything depends on the tasks - the special forces of the marines do not fight with the special forces of the enemy's marines in real life, they have other goals.

Thirdly, cannot be given preference based on the number of successful operations. Their number strongly depends on the age of the unit, as well as the peculiarities of the foreign policy and internal stability of the state to which it belongs. For example, the police special forces of Colombia - "Humglas" - regularly storming the laboratories of local drug cartels, in any case will be more experienced than the special forces of the relatively quiet and calm Belgium. As well as the US Marines managed to harden in Afghanistan and Iraq much stronger than the modern combat swimmers of peace-loving Denmark.

Need a twist

In view of the above, any attempt to find the strongest special forces in the world is doomed to an overly subjective result and the need to sacrifice serious nuances during the analysis. And therefore, instead of such ratings, we suggest looking at a selection of six countries and their special forces, which have a certain zest that distinguishes their fighters from others.

There are many special forces in the United States: the SWAT police, the 82nd and 101st airborne divisions, the Green Berets, the reconnaissance of the Marine Corps, the 75th Ranger Regiment and others. The most elite is considered to be the "Navy SEALs" (SEAL) and the Delta operational detachment of the ground forces. It is there that the best of the Rangers and the Green Berets are subsequently selected. Per recent decades these special forces, among others, have accumulated the most serious experience of military operations in foreign territory due to the desire of the States to spread democracy by unleashing wars. In addition, it is the American special forces, including the Delta detachment, SEALs and the Green Berets, that have received the widest media coverage due to the generous funding of the image component of these units and frequent flickering in the cinema and gaming industry.

Great Britain

In England, the undisputed leader is the airborne service of the ground forces - SAS. This is one of the oldest special forces in the world, founded in 1941 and received its first combat experience back in World War II. After there were Malaya, Borneo, Oman, Yemen, counter-terrorist operations in Northern Ireland, participation in conflicts in the South Atlantic, the Persian Gulf and Bosnia. Due to the tasks set over the years of existence by both the British army and its foreign intelligence, the SAS has gained diverse and large-scale experience in operating in real combat conditions and has become a model on which many special forces were subsequently created in other countries.

Israel

At least some information, in addition to the name, is not available for all Israeli special forces. And among these, the most interesting are the special forces of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces "Sayeret Matkal" and performing similar tasks at sea "Shayetet 13" - a special unit of the Israeli Navy. They are engaged in intelligence, security and anti-terrorist operations on the territory of the country and abroad. It was Sayeret Matkal that was the main striking force during the operation at Entebbe airport, which is considered the most successful operation to free hostages in enemy territory in the history of the fight against terrorism. At the same time, Sayeret Matkal is the only unit of this level in the world that is staffed by conscripts.

Austria

The hostage-taking at the Munich Olympics in 1972 forced many countries to come to grips with the creation of anti-terrorist special forces. In Austria, this failed for the first time a few days after its creation - even before the group arrived at the hostage-taking site, the criminal shot two civilians, several policemen and committed suicide. Then there was a whole series of failures - at best, it was possible to negotiate with the terrorists only by transferring a ransom. Only in 1978 was a new anti-terrorist group "Cobra" created, which radically changed the reputation of the Austrian special forces. Despite the fact that in the history of the existence of the unit, he did not have too many reasons to show himself in business, his fighters carried out several operations extremely quickly and with commendable results. Including "Cobra" is the only such detachment that managed to prevent the hijacking of an aircraft (by the way, Russian) directly during the flight. Also, this special unit is famous for the fact that during its existence, albeit not for a very long time, not a single member of it died.

Netherlands

The most interesting Dutch special forces are the anti-terrorist detachments of the Royal Navy Corps (BBE), which includes a special detachment of marines and a ground amphibious combat group. The highlight of WWE is the use of non-lethal capture methods. So, in 1974, a special squad successfully stormed a prison with armed Palestinian terrorists, using only stun grenades and hand-to-hand combat techniques. But they became famous not for this case, but for the operation carried out three years later - the simultaneous capture of a school and a train with hostages. The well-coordinated actions of the Dutch special forces groups and the original moves taken both during the negotiations and during the assault subsequently fell into the textbooks of most anti-terrorist special forces in the world.

Russia

Despite the diversity of Russian special forces and the difference in their purpose, the GRU special forces and departments "A" and "B" of the Central Security Service of the FSB are considered the most famous in the world. At the same time, although their fighters have repeatedly proven their skills in weapons both in sniper competitions and in real operations to capture and destroy field commanders in the North Caucasus, they have a reputation, first of all, as unsurpassed masters of hand-to-hand combat. Alpha veterans recall being trained to have the enemy destroyed or completely neutralized before they even knew what was going on. Moreover, due to the specifics of the operations, it often had to seem from the side that just one of the friends became unwell. Other Russian special forces are considered to be just as seriously trained in hand-to-hand combat. Here, for example, is what the English-language military portal armchairgeneral.com writes:

“... In hand-to-hand combat, Russian special forces are the best military unit in the world. Its fighters spend more time in training than any other special forces in the world, including the Navy Seals, Ranger, Green Berets, Delta, SAS and Israeli commandos.

But the most important thing, of course, is not in the “highlights” of this or that division of this or that country. The main thing is that they can successfully fulfill their duties, protecting the peaceful sleep of their fellow citizens. It is worth noting that, it seems, the Russian detachments succeeded in this better than all their colleagues - to a certain extent, it would be right to call our country a safe haven in a troubled world. And may it continue to be so.

Story modern forces special purpose in our country began relatively recently - in fact, the starting point can be considered the moment the Russian Federation itself appeared. Numerous detachments assigned to the KGB and the GRU were dispersed into new units, and several new elite groups were formed, which immediately had to deal with the legacy of the collapsed empire. Despite the mortal danger that awaits each of the soldiers of the special forces, many people dream of getting here, but only a few units can go through the most severe selection.

Squad "Alpha"

The name "Alpha" was invented by journalists eager for catchy words, who slightly embellished the bureaucratically dry Office "A". The fighters of this detachment are working on carrying out counter-terrorist operations - we can say that this is the first level of the country's barrier against the threat of world terrorism. The Alpha unit is rightfully considered the elite of the Russian special forces and is highly rated internationally.

Detachment "Vympel"

This is one of the oldest special forces in our country. The Vympel group was formed under the KGB of the USSR: with the collapse of the country, the sign was changed (now it is the Special Purpose Center of the FSB of Russia), but the structure was left the same. Vympel fighters are considered external agents - they are used for pinpoint operations outside of Russia.

OSN "Volcano"

It is enough to look at the place of permanent deployment of this special unit in order to roughly imagine the level of training of the fighters. OSN "Volkan" is based in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic of the Southern Federal District - these guys took part in the first Chechen war, and in subsequent counter-terrorist operations. Not only fire training is valued here: in order to get into the "Volcano", the applicant will have to undergo serious engineering, technical, topographic and medical testing.

Detachment "Warrior"

Contractors of the "Warrior" are tested for the right to wear a maroon beret in the order of monthly practice. On their shoulders lies the fight against organized criminal groups and terrorist gangs. It is the “warriors” who are trusted to ensure the security of top officials of the Russian Federation.

PDSS

The abbreviation stands for "Underwater sabotage forces and means." Roughly speaking, the PDSS is an analogue of the American "fur seals", with a large adjustment for the harsh Russian realities. A candidate for combat swimmers goes through the strictest multi-month selection, during which physical and psychological stress reaches the limit. PDSS units are on duty at all Russian naval bases and carry out targeted missions outside the country.

In the world of the military, nothing strikes the imagination more than special forces. In addition to conventional military forces, most countries have an elite group of troops that meet a higher standard of requirements and training. Some of these groups have received wide publicity, others are not so well known and shrouded in myths. A commando can silently emerge from the water to silently neutralize guards, storm a plane to rescue hostages in a captured shopping center, sabotage enemy bridges and roads, and perform other top-secret missions in the military world. Which countries have the best special forces in the world? This is a difficult and almost unanswerable question, since any national special forces are created for serious missions, from countering terrorism and rescuing hostages, to reconnaissance and even attack. However, past operations and reputation can be taken into account to assess which forces are in the lead.

Special Forces GIGN, France

First on the list is the French Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN for short) from France. GIGN, like most of the European special forces, traces its history after the hostage-taking at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In France, a year earlier, there had been a prison riot in which hostages were taken and killed. The result of these upheavals led to the creation of a force that today includes approximately 400 fighters. Specializing in hostage rescue and counter-terrorist operations, GIGN has repeatedly shown itself in action. Past operations have included the rescue of 30 student hostages in Djibouti, the capture of war criminals in Bosnia, the fight against Somali pirates and of course the dramatic attack and hostage rescue aboard Air France Flight 8969 in Marseille in 1994.

SSG Group, Pakistan

In 1956, the Pakistani army created its own special forces known as the Special Services Group (SSG). This force was modeled on the British SAS and US Special Forces, and its strength remains classified. The selection into the ranks of the special forces is very strict, and only 1 out of 4 newcomers, after nine months of training, an on-board school, hand-to-hand combat courses and exhausting physical exercises, fall into the ranks of the SSG. The SSG is trained to perform tasks in all sorts of environments, including mountains, desert, jungle, and even underwater combat. During the early Cold War, SSG forces trained and operated alongside US Special Forces. Some of the fighters were trained in Afghanistan fighting the Mujahideen against the Soviets in the 1980s. India claims that SSG forces frequently attacked its soldiers in the border areas between the two countries. Later, the SSG focused on local counter-terrorism operations, taking part in many successful operations.

Sayeret Matkal, Israel

This Israeli special forces branch is focused on intelligence, counter-terrorism and hostage rescue outside of Israel. Sayeret Matkal was created in 1957 to fill a void in Israel's special forces and is made up of candidates selected for high physical and intellectual characteristics. Applicants complete eighteen months of training, including basic infantry school, paratrooper school, counter-terrorist training, and reconnaissance. The force has taken part in many large scale operations since the 1960s. The most famous of these is Operation Entebbe/Thunderbolt, which made Sayeret Matkal famous all over the world. The operation began after several Palestinian terrorists took hostages aboard the airliner. Many hostages were released, but more than 100 people (mostly Israeli and Jewish hostages) were detained at the airport's terminal building. A group of approximately 100 Israeli commandos, including the Sayeret Matkal Special Forces, attacked the position, killing the terrorists and freeing all the hostages.

EKO-Cobra, special forces of Austria

In 1972, following an attack on Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics, Austria created the Cobra-Einsatzkommando for anti-terror operations. The detachment was created from 450 men who served in the Austrian Federal Police. Training at EKO-Cobra is similar to that of other squads, and includes several months of specialized courses in marksmanship, language learning, hand-to-hand combat, and tactical combat training. All candidates undergo psychological and physical testing. During training, special forces soldiers learn explosives, scuba diving, and sniping. While the EKO-Cobra did not have such outstanding operations as Sayeret Matkal, they successfully freed the hostages in the Graz prison in 1996, and are the only counter-terrorism team to prevent a mid-flight hijacking. In this case, in 1996, four Cobra fighters were on the flight when the hijacker demanded a yaw. Needless to say, the raider chose the worst flight for such a move, and was immediately neutralized by the special forces.

Delta Force, USA

The full name of this group is the 1st Special Operations Detachment "Delta". In addition to counterterrorism operations, Delta can also take part in hostage rescue, attack, reconnaissance, and less covert direct impact operations. The group was formed in 1977 as a result of a growing number of terrorist operations. It was created mainly from soldiers who served in the American special forces, Green Berets, or Rangers. Potential applicants must be male, 21 years of age or older, have high test scores, and be physically and mentally fit. A series of grueling physical and mental tests allows you to immediately get rid of the weakest. According to the results of testing, less than 1 applicant out of 10 is admitted to intensive 6-month training courses. Delta Force operations are shrouded in mystery, but you can be sure they are at the forefront of any US-led operation.

JTF2 Special Forces, Canada

Established in 1993 and expanded to several hundred fighters after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Canadian Special Forces JTF2 is an elite counter-terrorism and special operations group. Composed of members of the Canadian Forces, JTF2 performs a wide range of operations. They have repeatedly escorted VIPs and provided security at events such as the 2010 Winter Olympics. More covertly, they worked in many of the world's hotspots, rescuing hostages in Iraq, or hunting down Serb snipers in Bosnia. Their presence in Afghanistan is mostly classified, but it is known that some forces were still involved in separate operations. Their activities were so secret that even the Canadian Prime Minister did not know that JTF2 Special Forces were involved in Afghanistan during the first years.

Spetsnaz Alpha, Russia

The elite division of Russian special forces, Alpha Group, was founded in the mid-1970s and became famous during the invasion of Afghanistan, during which Alpha fighters stormed the Presidential Palace in Kabul, killing everyone in the building. In 1985 a group was sent to Beirut to try to rescue four Soviet diplomats. Rumor has it that when the diplomats were killed, the alpha fighters hunted down the relatives of the invaders and returned them to their families practically piece by piece to send a message to would-be terrorists. Domestically, Alpha has been involved in most major anti-terrorist operations, such as the siege of the Nord-Ost theater in 2002 and the takeover of the Beslan school in 2004. Both events demonstrated the rather brutal nature of Russian special forces, as hundreds of hostages died in the course of the operation.

Shayetet 13, Israel

Another Israeli special forces group, Shayetet 13, is linked to the Israeli navy. Established in 1948, this force has taken part in all major Israeli military operations, from hostage rescue and counter-terrorism to intelligence gathering and surveillance. The course of study lasts 20 months and subjects candidates to the most demanding psychological and physical tests even before the start of specialized training. SWAT soldiers learn all kinds of combat, skydiving, scuba diving and more. Shayetet 13 is also responsible for seizing weapons heading for the Gaza Strip. Their most famous operation took place after the 1972 Olympics in Munich, when special forces hunted down and eliminated those responsible for the attack on Israeli athletes.

Navy Seals, USA

The Navy SEALs are an American special forces group created in 1962. This group has achieved literally mythical status over the years of its existence. Thanks in part to Operation Neptune Spear, a mission in which commandos went to Abbottabad in May 2011 and killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda. This is an elite physical and mental strength, where only the best of the best are selected. Training takes a year, and most applicants can't even pass the physical proficiency test, which includes swimming, push-ups, squats, and running. But if you pass these very strict standards, then go to general training. After completing the training, you go further, obtaining the qualification of a Navy SEAL, and only after that the door to specialized training opens for you. All this ensures that special forces soldiers are physically and mentally strong and capable of performing the most difficult operations anywhere in the world.

SAS Special Forces, UK

What could be a special forces group that surpasses the legendary Navy SEALs? This is the SAS special forces - the British Special Forces Service, created in 1941 to work behind the lines of German and Italian troops and support the resistance movement against the occupying forces. The physical requirements for candidates are very strict and require great endurance. Testing culminates in a 40-mile march with full ammunition, which must be completed in 20 hours. Applicants must be able to swim two miles in an hour and a half and run four miles in 30 minutes. After that, they are thrown into the jungle to learn survival and receive navigational skills, after which they undergo survival practice. The final test is a 36-hour interrogation session in an attempt to break the candidate's will. And only after that the candidate will be admitted to further training. SAS special forces soldiers take security courses at MI5 and MI6, training in intelligence service and counterintelligence operations. British special forces are like a mixture of Navy SEALs and James Bond in one bottle.
