Top football teams in the world. The strongest football teams in the world: team ranking

The attitude to the FIFA rating is always different. international organization publishes it every month, but often this news goes unnoticed. They fell, they got up - well, okay. Attention is paid to the rating only during the draws of any international tournaments, since the distribution into baskets depends on the ranking table. It is at this moment that many begin to wonder why our performance is worse than someone else's.

The FIFA rating is really often surprising. For example, Wales is above England, although the Welsh are slipping in the World Cup qualifiers, and their neighbors are confidently solving the problem. Brazil has long been at the head of the South American group, but only in April will it finally overtake Argentina. By the way, "Albiceleste", dropping to fifth place, will remain above the rest of the South American teams. Surprisingly, in April the team of Bhutan, who lost the other day with a double-digit score, will improve their positions. How is this all possible?

Rating formula

The first indicator is the easiest: victory - 3 points, draw - 1, defeat - 0.

In addition, two more terms are added to the rating, based on the results of the teams for four years (48 months). The first is the average number of points scored in matches over the past 12 months. The second is the average number of points scored over the previous 36 months.

The importance of the match

All matches under the auspices of FIFA have different importance. It is worth noting that there are friendly matches of national teams that are not official and for this reason do not affect the rating.

In essence, the importance of a match is a special coefficient. The calculation is as follows:

Friendly match - 1;

Match of the qualifying tournament for the World or Continental Championship - 2.5;

Continental Championship or Confederations Cup match - 3;

World Cup match - 4.

Rival Strength

The strength of the opponent is calculated based on the same FIFA rating. Again, there is a formula: you need to subtract the opponent's position in this rating from 200. That is, a match against the leader of the FIFA ranking table has a coefficient of 199 (200-1) and so on.

However, there are 205 teams in the FIFA rankings. Can the Opponent Strength indicator be negative? Of course not. According to the above formula, the coefficient is calculated up to the 150th team in the rating, respectively. Further, in any case, an indicator equal to 50 is taken. So a match against any opponent adds at least 50 to the rating calculation formula.

Confederation coefficient

Like the "Importance of the match" indicator, everything is simple here. Each confederation (UEFA, CONMEBOL and so on) has its own coefficient, which does not change regardless of anything.

The indicators are as follows:

CONMEBOL (South America) - 1;

UEFA (Europe) - 0.99;

All others - 0.85.

I would like to believe that now the whole procedure for calculating the FIFA rating has become clearer.

Andrey Tsentrov

Eurocup tournaments (EC) appeared in the 50s of the XX century in order to give the best clubs from different countries of Europe the opportunity to “measure their strength”. Now there are two European cups - the Champions League (Champions League) and the Europa League (LE).
Number of clubs that field in European competition different countries, is not the same, as well as in which tournaments and from what stages they start. This depends on the position a country occupies in a special UEFA ranking, commonly referred to as the "UEFA Coefficients Table" (TC).
TC is formed as follows. At the end of the European tournaments, the so-called “season coefficient” is calculated for each country. To do this, the sum of points earned by all clubs that represented this country in the EC of the current season is divided by the number of these clubs (the coefficient is calculated to thousandths, without rounding). For the UEFA Coefficients Table, points are awarded according to the following rules:
- in qualifying (preliminary) rounds: victory - 1 point, draw - 0.5 points, defeat - 0 points;
- in the main rounds: victory - 2 points, draw - 1 point, defeat - 0 points;
- for getting the club into the group stage of the Champions League (and it does not matter, through the qualifying round or automatically), it is awarded 4 bonus points;
- for hitting the club in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League - 5 bonus points;
- 1 bonus point is awarded for reaching the ¼ finals, ½ finals and the Champions League final or ¼ finals, ½ finals and the LE final (but no bonus is given for winning the finals in both ECs).
The odds table is compiled by summing up the odds for the last five seasons.
Eligibility for Tournaments:
1st-3rd places - four clubs each in the Champions League and three each in the Europa League
4-6 - three each in the Champions League and three each in the Europa League
7-9 - two each in the Champions League and four each in the Europa League
10-15 - two each in the Champions League and three each in the Europa League

FIFA National Team Ranking

FIFA Ranking ( official name FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings The FIFA / Coca-Cola World Ranking is a ranking system for national football teams, which is determined every month based on the results of the performance of football teams from around the world over the past four years. It was first introduced in 1993 as a relative indicator of the strength of the national team at the moment, allowing you to assess the dynamics of the team's growth. The more successful the team performs, the higher the place in the ranking. For each match played, teams are awarded points according to the rules. After the World Championship in Germany 2006, the points system was changed.
The system is based on the principle of scoring points for each match played and calculating the average number of points for each year prior to the release of the rating. The number of points received per match is not fixed and depends on the opponent, the result, and the importance of the match.
Only the results of the first national teams are included in the calculation. No games of "combined clubs", Olympic, youth or women's teams are counted.
The FIFA rating is used to scatter national teams in the draws in the final tournaments of the World Cups.

The ranking of countries in football is effective tool, allowing to determine real power a specific team against the background of other rivals, even those with whom they had never met before. Such lists help fans to understand how much their state is better or worse than its competitors. In turn, football associations use it to form various tournaments. It is the official top that allows you to maintain balance in the formation of groups. Their composition is regulated by four baskets, where the first is for the favorites, and the fourth is for the outsiders.

Today, there are a number of national football rankings, but only a few have nothing less than legal force. It is quite difficult for a layman to figure out which tables are neglected by specialists, and which, on the contrary, are put in priority. To comprehend the truth, it is necessary to study all the existing varieties of such quotes.

What are football ratings?

The club level has its own ranking systems, from the odds table to the lists of the best. However, if we are talking about men's national teams, then here the calculation is carried out according to several official and unofficial ratings of countries in football:

  1. FIFA - takes into account the results of teams only;
  2. UEFA - both states and clubs are ranked;
  3. ELO is a system taken as a basis in latest changes FIFA. It is used in chess and eSports tournaments;
  4. unofficial World Cup - any country that has defeated the current winner of the Mundial can become the leader of such a football rating;
  5. Footballtop - national teams line up according to the preferences of the fans.

The current ranking of countries in football in 2018, as before, is the first two options. All the rest have no value for professionals. On the other hand, they can amuse the fans of modest teams in terms of football.

What is the top from FIFA?

For the first time, football team scores were counted in 1993. Based on the results of confrontations, the football rating in the world changed regularly. Despite this, only 8 teams have become leaders in the 25-year history. Six from Europe and two from South America. In the photo below, you can see these lucky ones.

The algorithm for calculating points in the rankings of countries in football has been modified throughout the existence of such a top. Another innovation was launched immediately after the completion of the domestic Mundial. Now the results of matches are taken into account more objectively - not only the winning team gets points, but the losing team also loses them.

The victory in the ranking of countries of the World Cup does not mean at all that the champion will become the leader in the overall standings according to FIFA. For example, now the winner of the 2018 World Cup France has to be content with only the second line. At the top - the bronze medalist of the Mundial team from Belgium, which, by the way, topped the top for the first time. This situation explained complex scheme scoring, where a number of characteristics, multiplied among themselves, play a decisive role:

  • the outcome of the match - for a victory, as usual, they give 3 points, a draw - 1, a victory on penalties - 2;
  • coefficient of the importance of the match - depends on the status of the match;
  • opponent's strength coefficient - the higher the defeated opponent in the ranking of countries in football, the greater it is;
  • regional coefficient - calculated based on the confederation of the state (UEFA, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, AFC, OFC or CAF), after the update it is not used at all.

Just yesterday, the FIFA ranking of countries in football was compiled based on the results of the last four years. If a team did not play a single match during this period, it was excluded from the list. The top was released monthly, but now the points will be updated immediately after the end of the match. The head of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, said that in this way all confederations are equalized. The hegemony of Europe and South America came to an end. It will become much easier for conditional Kyrgyzstan to get to the World Championship now. Of course, for this you need to demonstrate a really good game.

What does the UEFA ranking look like?

The UEFA football rating for today is not just a standings of the best European countries. Its main purpose is to form baskets before the European Championship. In addition, such a top plays a key role in the qualification of clubs for the main tournaments held under this auspices. How all the leaders of the past and present have spoken is clearly demonstrated by the following scheme.

Speech by all the winners of the European Championship and Russia. Source:

  • 7 clubs in European competitions - 1-4 places;
  • 6 teams - 5-6 position;
  • 5 teams - from 7 lines to 15 inclusive.

The higher the country's position in the UEFA football rankings, the more teams receive direct tickets to the group stage of the Champions League and LE. The rest go through several stages of qualification, where representatives of all 55 associations take part. In this way, here it is not the team that earns points, but the clubs of each specific federation.

Location of teams at the end of the 2018 World Cup

The Russian Mundial is officially recognized as the best in history - a fact confirmed by the competent authority. The event was really grandiose, but first of all everyone was interested in the game, and only then the surrounding atmosphere and infrastructure. Each match forced the athletes to give 100% - not only the final place in the ranking of countries in football, but also the image of the state depended on this! As many as 36 confrontations, fans watched at least one goal - this is a record!

  1. France;
  2. Croatia;
  3. Belgium;
  4. England;
  5. Uruguay.

As for the main favorites of each tournament - Brazil, and even more so Germany, their performance did not leave a bright impression. Although we all remember how they shone in their time. The table above reflects the past successes of the invariable giants of the world rankings of countries in football.

Where is Russia?

The national team has undoubtedly jumped above its head. The Russians literally fought for the honor of their state at the Mundial. Because of this, they made the loudest jump of the outgoing year in the world ranking of countries in football.

The current position of the national team in the world

According to the rules of the organizers of the 2018 World Cup, our squad automatically became a participant in the competition as the hosts of the tournament. As a result, for two whole years I had to be content exclusively friendly matches. Only this can explain the shameful 70th place in which the team was in the ranking of countries in FIFA football dating back to the beginning of 2018. However, after the triumphant quarterfinal, where even the grandiose Spain was defeated, Russia immediately rose to 21st place.

Fortunately, the wards of Stanislav Cherchesov did not stop there. In the debut of the League of Nations, the team got two wins and one draw. This allowed us to increase by another 8 lines. Now Russia has settled in the ranking of countries in football in the world at 41st place. It's only the beginning…

What is the situation in Europe?

As you probably already understood, clubs, not national teams, rule in UEFA. On the this moment Russian teams don't shine in Europe, but even that doesn't stop them from being in sixth place. The closest pursuers are Portugal, Belgium and Ukraine. It is unlikely that this season they will affect the position of the national team in the ranking of countries in football. But it is unrealistic to catch up with the leading France and Germany! Therefore, the main thing is to keep what has been obtained, because such a position allows you to delegate as many as 6 clubs. If we were a line lower, the number of teams would drop to 5.

What place does Russia have at the 2018 World Cup?

The rating of the countries of the World Cup immediately after its completion was published on the official website of FIFA. Fans were surprised by the lowest position of their favorite team of all possible. Why did it happen, because we, unlike others, took off only after a series of penalty kicks? The logic of the organizers is quite simple - whoever scored more points in total for the entire tournament, that one is higher.

  • Russia - 8.
  • Sweden - 9.
  • Brazil - 10.
  • Uruguay - 12.

Here is such a painfully simple arithmetic, which lowered the hosts to 8th place in the ranking of the World Cup countries. It's a paradox, but the team scored exactly 8 points. Be that as it may, the outgoing year made many domestic fans believe in the national team. I would like to hope that the players will continue to please their fans.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SUNDAY

On Sunday, the FIFA Council made a number of important decisions, one of which concerned a new formula used to calculate the coefficients of all the teams in the world. "After more than two years of exploring various alternatives and extensive consultations with all confederations, the FIFA administration has proposed to the FIFA Council a modified formula - a system that was approved today and will be used for the first time after the conclusion of the World Cup in Russia," the official statement on the website of the International federation.

"A group of sports professionals and statisticians have developed a formula based on the Elo method," FIFA said. Let me explain: Arpad Imre Elo is an American physicist of Hungarian origin who invented a system for calculating the individual coefficients of players used in chess. FIFA has already taken as a basis his method - for the ranking of women's teams. Now it's the turn of the men.

What is it all done for? "To make the formula more accurate, eliminate opportunities for ranking manipulation and ensure equal opportunities for all teams," FIFA cheered us on.

HOW IT WILL WORK

Now the "weight" of the match is taken into account - the relative strength of the opponents and the importance of each game. Depending on this, points will be added to the coefficient of the team or vice versa, it will decrease.

Friendly matches will be less important. And vice versa, heaviest weight will receive the games of the final rounds of the World Cup.

In general, the formula looks like this:

P = Pbefore + I x (W - We)

Pbefore - points that the team had before the match, which is taken into account.

I - the importance of the match. It varies as follows:

I = 05 - for friendly matches that are not played on the days set by the international calendar

I = 10 - for friendly matches that are held on the days set by the international calendar

I = 15 - Nations League group stage matches

I = 25 - play-offs and matches of the final stage of the League of Nations

I = 25 - qualifying matches of the championships of confederations (for example, the European championship) and the world championship

I = 35 - matches of the final tournaments of the championships of the confederations to the quarterfinals

I = 40 - matches of the final tournaments of the confederations championships starting from the quarterfinals, as well as all matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup

I = 50 - matches of the final tournament of the World Cup to the quarterfinals

I = 60 - matches of the final tournament of the World Cup starting from the quarter-finals.

W - match result

1=win, 0.5=draw, 0=lose

We - expected result of the match

We = 1/10 (-dr/600) + 1)

After each game played, which is included in the official FIFA register, computer program will recalculate the rating of each of the playing teams. This will happen for the first time in July after the completion of all 64 World Cup matches.

HOW WILL IT AFFECT THE RUSSIAN TEAM

One of the main advantages of this rating system, FIFA called that it "allows for a smooth transition" from the old system to the new one. In addition, points won a few years ago will no longer lose their value, as they used to. And the national teams will no longer have to cheat by avoiding friendly matches. The confederation coefficient will disappear, which to a certain extent complicated the tasks for teams not from Europe and South America. Finally, the host of the World Cup will be able to avoid a serious drop in the rankings, which has happened regularly in past years.

The Poles, who some time ago were cunning with friendly matches (someone smart figured that the white-reds should abandon them at a certain stage), in this rating they are only 19th.

It turns out that with an imperfect and unfair formula, someone managed to get a benefit, and someone, like the Russian team, fell to the bottom. But now everything's supposedly in' equal conditions".

Only now the starting positions in these "equal conditions" are different. And it will not be easy for us to rise from this bottom, what the 70th place looks like.

And it is highly likely that in the qualifying tournament for the 2022 World Cup we will get very strong opponents.

famous british magazine FourFourTwo published his list of the top 100 football players of 2016. There are no Russian players in it, but this does not make the list less interesting.

Top 10 players of 2016

1. (Real Madrid, Portugal national team)

The intrigue of all football ratings in recent years actually comes down to which of the two names will be given the first place, and which - the second. And at the end of 2016 FourFourTwo gave gold to European champion and winner Cristiano Ronaldo. The publication emphasizes that despite the opinion of many fans that the Portuguese is gradually losing ground in world football, they are still quite strong.

2. (“Barcelona”, Argentina national team)

In the past year, Leo Messi got the second line of the rating. The Argentine was reminded of the failure in the Copa America final, but they still note the progress of the already star football player. The publication writes that his free-kick technique has improved, but more importantly, Messi has finally turned into a real strategist, able to correctly determine when it is better to try to score on his own, and when to assist his partners.

3. (Barcelona, Uruguay national team)

Following Messi is his loyal partner Luis Suarez, another member of the famed attacking trident. And, as noted FourFourTwo, it is thanks to him that we can assume that Cristiano and Leo no longer have a monopoly in big football. In addition, Suarez is very hardworking and not greedy, which makes him even more great.

Barcelona - Arsenal. 2:1. Luis Suarez

4. (Atletico, French team)

It would seem that Neymar should follow Messi and Suarez, but European vice-champion Antoine Griezmann wedged ahead of the Brazilian. FourFourTwo notes that in 2016 the Frenchman became a world-class star, and even though in 2016 Cristiano with both his teams snatched a victory from Griezmann, first in the Champions League, and then in, the year one of the leaders and top scorer of Euro 2016 still came out on - really outstanding.

Atlético - Barcelona. 1:0. Antoine Griezmann

5. (“Barcelona”, Brazil national team)

Giving Neymar 5th place in his ranking, FourFourTwo writes that in Barcelona the player had two tasks: to find his place among other superstars, and also to prepare for the role of Messi's heir, because sooner or later he will definitely be needed. The editors believe that the Brazilian coped with the first of the tasks and is on the way to solving the second. In addition, progress is noted for Last year and also the fact that Neymar really found and realized his place in the team. If necessary, he is able to help in defense and at the same time will not be greedy in attack. Well, and everything else in 2016, Neymar, as you know, still became the Olympic champion.

6. (Real Madrid, Wales)

There was a moment in Gareth Bale's career when it seemed that he was about to leave - it was a rather sad story of a serious conflict in the camp of Madrid. But it seems that all the troubles are behind, and the player continues to progress. The publication notes his outstanding physical data and the desire to control the game. And, of course, how much he did for, which became one of the brightest teams at Euro 2016. And if Neymar can replace Messi in the future, it is Bale who has been called a potential successor to Ronaldo.

Russia - Wales. 0:3. Gareth Bale

7. ("Bayern", Poland national team)

The most difficult thing for Robert Lewandowski in 2016 was to improve his performance in 2015, which became incredibly successful for the Pole. As a result, the magazine gave the player 7th place, and at the same time recalled the words, which believes that in the game Lewandowski should rely not so much on tactical literacy as on his killer instinct.

8. (Manchester City, Belgium)

The publication believes that Kevin de Bruyne has finally become a real star, and give him 8th place in the ranking. It is noted that he once did not give him the opportunity to prove himself in simply because the footballer was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now the Belgian has truly revealed himself, among other things, because he finally ended up in right place at the right time.

Manchester United - Manchester City. 0:1. Kevin de Bruyne

9. (Manchester City, Argentina national team)

FourFourTwo believes that for Sergio Aguero, the outgoing 2016 was the year professional growth. The magazine writes that the football player has good statistics, and the combination of brilliant work of the mind and performance skills makes him more and more dangerous for his rivals.

10. ("Bayern", Germany national team)

Manuel Neuer became the only goalkeeper to be included in the top ten according to the publication. FourFourTwo recalls that the game of the German led to a great evolution of goalkeeping skills and forced all the goalkeepers of the world to look up to him. Also noteworthy is the crazy "superhuman" concentration that Neuer has, and of course his great contribution to the game, including at Euro 2016.
