Sri Lanka in October where it is better to relax. The best prices for tours to Sri Lanka at the moment

Sri Lanka or the island of Ceylon is an amazing country of its kind. it a large number of attractions, beaches and other equally interesting entertainment. When is the best time to go on vacation to the island, and which months are the most the best in autumn we will look at in this article.

Weather and holidays in Sri Lanka in September

Sri Lanka is located near the equator and therefore the course of its annual temperatures is quite even, and different climate brings strong monsoons, which take place throughout the territory at different times. Sri Lanka in September offers holidays in different regions depending on the weather conditions. In the south-west of the country, in September, it ends, and monsoons begin to dominate, which have different territorial affiliations. Monsoons bring tropical downpours and storms. For comparison, here the amount of precipitation is 2-3 times more than in the northeast during the rainy season.

And this feature of the climate is due to the Central mountain range lying in the very middle of the island, which with its peaks delays the passage humid air to the northeast of the island. Therefore, these regions of the island remain dry. I must say that they account for three-quarters of the entire island. That's why there is no such thing as "out of season", because tour operators can choose for their clients hotels that are located in:

  • Trincomalee,
  • Nilaveli,
  • upupeli,
  • batticaloa,
  • Pasekude
  • Arugam Bay.

These resorts can offer the most affordable vacation at a reasonable price, so many tourists choose September for their vacation.

It is also noteworthy that weather in september the east of the island is much hotter and air temperature there it varies from +31 to +34°С. The air temperature is lower the higher above sea level, so in Nuwara Eliya the average daily temperature reaches + 21 ° C, and in the evening you can feel the arrival of autumn.

For those who are into scuba diving, we advise you to buy a tour to the Jaffna and Pigeon peninsulas, and surfing and windsurfing are best in Arugam Bay. You will also enjoy a beach holiday in September here.

If at the beginning of September the prices for fruits and products are quite reasonable, then you and your children can enjoy the exotic to the fullest. If you come to Ceylon, then be sure to ride through the Cultural Triangle - such cities as:

  • Anuradhapure,
  • Polonnaruwe,
  • Kandy.

All these cities are simply replete with structures and buildings of 2000 years ago.

Also you can visit turtle plantation, tea plantation, Royal Botanical Garden, elephant nursery, etc. You can go canoeing, horseback riding, boat safari, helicopter flight or paragliding.

Beach holidays and weather in October

October is an unstable month in relation to the climate. In the northeast of the island, monsoons fully come into their own only in November, and in the southwest they are already ending. However, it rains all over the island. Sri Lanka in October, according to meteorologists, is prone to rain in the southern and western parts of the island. Precipitation falls everywhere and is 2-3 times more than in September. The beaches are empty beach holiday in october does not please tourists at all.

The capital city of Colombo receives much more rainfall than the rest of Ceylon. Therefore, in resorts predicting the weather is almost impossible. At this time, vouchers are much cheaper than in other months, and if you want to take a chance, you can go to rest on the island in rainy and monsoon season. And at the beginning and at the end of October the weather will not change for the better.

Also read on our website a useful and interesting article: where to relax abroad in October in 2018, if you, for example, are looking for more stable weather for beach holiday.

Some tourists are lucky and get dry weather when from +31 to +32°С. But in southern regions the heat is less felt and the air temperature reaches +28…+29°С. Water in the sea and ocean warms up to +24°С.

But best resorts and hotels are located in the highlands of Nuwara Eliya, as here you can conduct a variety of excursions.

A beach holiday in October here will not please you very much, as the sea will not be friendly, and the water in it will be warm. The waves are so powerful that you cannot go further than waist-deep, because they can knock you down. You can go surfing or windsurfing.

The best conditions for a beach holiday in the Trincomalee area, but just keep in mind that there may be poisonous jellyfish who might be dangerous to meet. For diving, small islands such as Pigeon and others are best suited.

Sooner or later, the rains will stop, and you will be able to see the ancient ruins of Buddhist temples, tea mountains, beautiful waterfalls, visit wedding ceremonies and rites.

In October, ticket prices are still quite reasonable, so you can buy a tour for a very reasonable price and go there with the whole family.

Weather and beach holidays in November in Sri Lanka

Last autumn month The number of tourists begins to grow significantly, as rain season, which dominated the entire previous period, finally starts to end. Sri Lanka in November begins to please us. But climate change does not happen all at once. At the beginning of November, it still rains quite often, and already at the end we see a significant improvement in the weather.

For holidays in Colombo and Galle, the time is still not the best. Often the weather in November in these cities and in general in this region is overshadowed by heavy winds and thunderstorms. Also, the ocean sends huge waves ashore and therefore holidays in November must be carefully planned with tour operators. In the second half of the month, the weather begins to change significantly, and now the monsoons come to the northeast of the country. Humid winds form in the Bay of Bengal, which cannot go to the southwest, as they are delayed by massive mountain slopes.

Average air temperature reaches+28…+29°С during the day and +24…+25°С in the evening. In order for you to be comfortable, it is best to rent a room on the first coastline, where it is better to relax, as it is blown by light breezes.

In Kandy, which is located at an altitude of about 500 meters above sea level, the nights are quite cool and the air temperature there reaches +20°C. In the mountainous region of Nuwara Eliya average daily temperature fluctuates from +11 to +20°С. The hotels located there are equipped with heating devices, which is a real exotic for the tropics. In the north and in the central regions of the island, in particular in Anuradhapura, it stands mainly overcast weather and about 15 days a month it rains. Excursions into the jungle are best done in dry weather and apply cream on the skin against malarial mosquitoes, which can bring you big trouble. It is also necessary to be careful, since during this period all the creeping living creatures of Ceylon are activated.

Also in November, you can devote your vacation to the beaches of Ceylon and engage in various types sports. Lying on the beach can be combined with an Ayurveda course, sightseeing in the surrounding area and getting to know the rich local culture and identity. Those who like to dive and jump on the waves usually choose beaches with coral reefs that form natural lagoons that “quench them”. In the south and west of the island, they are located in the region of Unawatuna, Dikwella and Polhena.

In the east of Sri Lanka, this is the small resort of Nilaveli. Surfers choose Kalpitiya, Negombo, Bentota or Beruwala to relax and practice their favorite sport. But divers prefer the resort area of Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa.

Also ripe this month Exotic fruits , so your gastronomic delights will be completely satisfied. Like many years ago, the "droplet island" of Ceylon, located in Indian Ocean, beckons to itself numerous fans exotics. There are countless historical and cultural monuments that are priceless for human civilization. Some tourists come to this region in search of their spiritual development and enrichment, and some simply to join ancient culture and expand your knowledge base.

The most famous tourist sites include:

  1. elephant orphanage in Pinavella,
  2. the mountainous region of Nuwara Eliya with tea plantations and excellent golf courses,
  3. Royal Botanical Garden near Kandy,
  4. "Cultural Triangle"
  5. sacred Mount Adam,
  6. Sinharaja rainforest, home to endemic animals,
  7. the famous waterfalls are Bambarakandu and Bridal Veil.

The inhabitants of Sri Lanka are very fond of various holidays and there are a lot of them on the island.

In November, the full moon festival "Il Poya" is celebrated, which is celebrated on the day when the god Buddha sent his disciples to carry his teachings to various Asian countries.

Sri Lankans also celebrate the end of the Muslim fast of Ramadan, which is called "Eid-Ul-Fitr".

In November, the cost of tours begins to rise. But still, they are still very acceptable, and therefore many people buy vouchers for this particular period of time. And compared to winter months here you can relax together or with the whole family for a fairly affordable price in a three or four-star hotel.

Sri Lanka is an amazing country on the island of the same name in the Indian Ocean, which can offer all the conditions for a quality holiday: marvelous views, heavenly beaches, attractions, cultural component, tourist infrastructure and much more. Of course, the way to the island is not close, and vouchers are not so cheap (many times more expensive than to Turkey or Egypt), but at least once in a lifetime, it is worth visiting Sri Lanka.

When can you fly there? Let's figure it out: there are only two seasons on the island: the dry season and the rainy season. Most tourists prefer to travel to the island during the dry season. What about the rainy season? To begin with, it is worth noting that, despite the relatively small size of the island, the rainy season manifests itself differently on the different coasts of Sri Lanka: on the northeast coast, rains fall most from October to January, and on the southwest - from May to July. And if the rest turned out to be in October, then this article is for you.

October is the peak of the monsoon season and is considered low tourist season(therefore, the prices for vouchers in travel agencies are acceptable). All over the island at this time high humidity, and the air temperatures are decent, on average + 30 ... + 32 ° C. Due to the humidity, the heat is felt more strongly, but the ocean breeze softens the situation a little. In Anuradhapura, a city on the Aruvi River in the north of the country, it is even hotter: during the day it is often + 33-34°C. And in Galle, a resort in the south of the country, it is a little cooler in October. During the day it is +28, and at night the temperature sometimes drops to 20 degrees Celsius.

It is also worth considering that the central mountainous regions of Sri Lanka are characterized by temperature differences, in the evening it is quite cool here - you must definitely grab a windbreaker!

In October, you can also have a beach holiday, because the water is very warm (about +29-30°C). The water temperature in the ocean is more than comfortable, but due to wind and strong waves, swimming on the beach can sometimes be prohibited (lifeguards display the appropriate flag). The ocean is especially worried in the northeast (in Trincomal, Nilaveli) - there beach season is nearing the end. But on some clear days, you can still swim, sunbathe and engage in water sports there.

Rains in October will be absolutely everywhere, however, everywhere the amount of precipitation is different. In Kandy, for example, it rains almost every day, in all other cities every other day or as needed. However, although the rainy season lasts until November, you may be lucky and you will find it raining only a couple of times during your entire vacation (for example, if you choose southern part islands). Moreover, the rains in Sri Lanka are most often short-lived. And most often, tourists and locals are only happy about the rains, and they don’t hide from the rains (fortunately, the rains are warm). Rains on the island begin rapidly and also rapidly fade away - therefore, it will not be superfluous to take a light raincoat or raincoat into your backpack.

And for the capital of Ceylon (who does not know, before gaining independence in European languages, the country was called Ceylon) October is one of the rainiest months of the year. The weather in Colombo is similar to May, when Sri Lanka experiences the first monsoonal peak. Here at this time it will be hot, cloudy and humid. During the day, as elsewhere, about 29 degrees Celsius, the nights are also stuffy and hot (about 26 degrees Celsius). October is probably not the best. best month for holidays in Colombo.

Holidays and festivals in Sri Lanka in October

One of the main holidays in October - Diwali. This festival and at the same time a public holiday on the island nation is also called "Deepawali" and is celebrated by the Tamil community. On this day, according to tradition, you need to take an oil bath in the morning, put on new clothes, then go to exchange gifts with family and friends, perform puja (a religious rite in Hinduism, offering food, water, incense, flowers to deities as an expression of respect and devotion to God, or Gods) and go to Koil (or Kovil, "King's House" - as the Tamils call special Hindu temples with Dravidian architecture).

In the evening, according to the plan, burning firecrackers and lighting lamps (in honor of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth) - this is how the Tamils expel evil from their family once and for all. Ceramic toys and special figurines made of crystalline sugar (known as "misiri") are also specially made for this holiday. The celebration of Diwali in Sri Lanka also includes a variety of games, dances, singing, but the wonderful traditions of a large family feast and family celebrations are also present.

Things to do in Sri Lanka in October

To begin with, it is worth noting that in October you can do beach holiday, unless, of course, the winds are very tense, and if the ocean is calm. The beaches in Sri Lanka are wonderful, the main thing is to choose a resort to your liking.

But still, Sri Lanka is much more than just a beach holiday. After all, there are a lot of interesting things on the island, you can’t argue here. Whatever you say, Sri Lanka is an island with amazing story, because it was mastered in the VI century. BC e., and that only over the years has not happened to him! On the island, of course, there are a lot of ancient buildings, but in larger cities, the influence of the Dutch, British and Portuguese is clearly visible, which in different periods time hosted on the island.

It will also be interesting to delve into the historical past of the country and go to amazing historical sights. Kandy, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya etc. You should definitely try a cup of real Ceylon tea(Ceylon - this is due to the former name of the state). Tea - business card islands, so it is not at all surprising that excursions to tea plantations in Sri Lanka are very popular. By the way, these plantations are really amazing, and many claim that they have become the most memorable sight of Ceylon.

It is simply unacceptable to visit Sri Lanka and not see the local temples with your own eyes. It's hard to say exactly how many there are. But one of the most important is Temple of the Tooth in Kandy(the ancient capital of the island) - this is where the tooth of the Buddha is kept, which, in fact, few people have seen, because it is always hidden from human eyes.

Other important religious buildings of the island - Golden Cave Temple in Dambulla, white Lankasilaka Viharaya Temple in Polonnaruwa, Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara Temple in Kelaniya, as well as kvadrangla temple near Polonnaruwa, which, unfortunately, has survived to this day in the form of ruins.

Sri Lanka has two capitals at once, as well as two official languages. Colombo is both a port city and the financial capital of Sri Lanka. And the "real" capital - Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte. In both cities with a decent history, there are many old mosques, churches, temples and, of course, museums, the exhibits of which have been attracting tourists for more than a dozen years.

Entertainment in Sri Lanka is not quite the same as Turkey-Egypt. And in general, you should not set yourself up for such a vacation - nevertheless, Ceylon has not yet “sold with giblets” tourist shark, and is popular precisely because of its unique untouched culture and exotic nature.

However, with kids the island will not be boring. Children in general are rarely bored unless they sit in one place. On the island, of course, there are water parks, a favorite children's adventure, however, there are very, very few of them, and they are not so chic and big. For example, you can go to an amusement park with a water section. "Leisure World"(in the town of Kaluaggala, on the west coast, near Negombo).

You can also try cricket- traditional entertainment in the spacious fields of the island. However, it’s not that cricket was especially popular among Russians (and generally at least somehow popular), but you can try it once, fortunately, chic juicy island fields are conducive to this activity.

Thus, Sri Lanka is attractive and interesting from all sides and absolutely for any tourist. Despite the fact that it often rains in October, the sky will sometimes be covered with clouds, and the ocean is not so calm, a trip to the island will definitely be positive, informative and very interesting - after all, in Sri Lanka, such a mysterious and distant island, there is simply no can be boring!

Reviews about holidays in Sri Lanka in October from the site. As in other countries of the world in Sri Lanka, you can relax in any month of the year, the main thing is to plan your tour. If you have not been here before, be sure to familiarize yourself with the climate of Sri Lanka in October 2019 and read the reviews of tourists about the rest of this particular month.

Holidays in Sri Lanka in October 2019 with prices for tours

Prices for holidays in 3* hotels in October start from RUR. Holidays in Sri Lanka are chosen by tourists for whom it is important to relax not so much with the body as with the soul. And those who want to feel the real exotic on themselves should definitely go here. People get tired of noisy holidays with clubs and foam parties and choose this calm island to spend their holidays there.

October in Sri Lanka is a truly hot and summer month. However, no one is safe from showers and thunderstorms. Despite the fact that in the southern and western parts of Ceylon the monsoons are already losing ground, and in the north they are only gaining momentum, even experienced meteorologists cannot predict where more precipitation will fall. But don't get upset. There are still some recommendations that will help you spend your holidays in Sri Lanka in October quite successfully. You should not settle in Colombo, as there are thunderstorms, and even with hurricanes, this month occur much more often than in other parts of the island. All over Ceylon they rule high temperatures air. During the day they reach +33 degrees. It is cooler in the south - the daytime temperature here does not rise above +29, but high humidity makes breathing much more difficult for people who are not accustomed to the climate. The mountainous part is cool and not so humid. Temperature indicators range from +11 to +20 degrees. This is great weather for excursions, but not for a beach holiday.

Despite all this, the reviews of tourists are replete with enthusiastic epithets and colorful photos. sunny weather. Here, as they say, whoever is lucky. Holidays in Sri Lanka in October do not scare travelers at all and are 98 percent comfortable. Despite the unpopularity of the season, tourists leave positive reviews about the holiday, talking about the indelible impressions that they experienced from the unprecedented beauty of the island, the diversity of flora and fauna and real unity with still untouched nature.

Sri Lanka in October is not in great demand. And so the prices for rest are quite reasonable. This is due to the fact that a beach holiday here is unlikely to succeed due to changeable weather. But excursions, surfing, golf and the study of local cuisine and religion have not been canceled. Prices for tours will save a personal or family budget, and get a lot of impressions of the local nature and culture for a moderate fee.

Hello friends. Today I will talk about the beaches of Sri Lanka. About when it is better to go to this beautiful country in all respects for tourism. There is also National parks nature and ancient monuments of culture and architecture under the protection of UNESCO, and incredible beauty of mountain landscapes with tea plantations and, of course, beaches. After all, Sri Lanka is an island.

You can go to Sri Lanka at any time of the year and for different purposes. The country has many hotels with fresh pools and spa treatments where you can enjoy your vacation and not depend on the mood of the weather. You can go to Sri Lanka both independently and through a travel agency.

In the article, we briefly talked about roads, weather, country features.

It's time for a detailed story about the beaches of the island, about their pros and cons, about what you can see and where to go near the beach.

Sri Lanka is lucky with beaches. You will not need, as in India, for example, to travel more than a day and a half by train to get from the beaches of the state of Goa to the beaches of Varkala. In Sri Lanka, distances are completely different. Everything happens faster and more pleasantly. The south-west of the island is directly littered with beaches, the distance between which takes from 15 minutes by tuk-tuk to 2 hours by bus. You just have to choose the right one for you.

Important! When choosing a beach in Sri Lanka, you need to remember three things: the season, geographical features and infrastructure of the island. AT different time monsoons blow from the ocean to the island. AT coastal waters high waves rise and swimming is simply impossible. Hotels temporarily stop their work and wait for a change in the wind.

In October, November, December, January and February, you need to choose the beaches of the Southwest Coast. It is about them that my story today.

If you have plans to relax at sea from May to September, then you should think about the east coast of Sri Lanka.

You can open the map and point your finger at any beach in the southwestern part of the island. Storms and huge waves will not be there. We give the top popular places that tourists prefer to visit. With them, we recommend starting your acquaintance with the beach of Sri Lanka. To make it easier for you to navigate, I will describe the best beaches in Sri Lanka from west to south. These beaches are equipped with good infrastructure. On them big choice housing, cafes, restaurants, entertainment and attractions.

Sri Lanka beaches on the map

Negombo

The beach is closest to (7 km), which in turn is located 30 km north of the capital. The beach is suitable for those who want to immediately plunge into the Indian Ocean upon arrival, take a break from the flight. Or vice versa - to take a break from an exotic trip around the island and gain strength before a long flight home.

The long sandy strip of Negombo beach is wide. There are plenty of places, but unfortunately, umbrellas and sunbeds are offered mainly only to those who stay in a coastal hotel. Independent tourists need to either negotiate with the hotel, or think over.

All hotels are located along the coast. The choice is large. There are more expensive, there are cheaper, there are closer to the shore, there are further away. Finding accommodation to your taste is very easy.

  • More expensive and close to the beach - Hotel Snahelo
  • Slightly cheaper, but not worse - hotel Holiday Fashion Inn
  • Budget guesthouse — Blue Elephant Tourist Guesthouse

Of the attractions in the neighborhood: you can visit the Muthurajawela nature reserve, which is home to about 200 species of plants and animals. The main historical values of Negombo are the old Dutch Fort and the Church of the Virgin Mary. For diving enthusiasts, there is a sunken ship and coral reefs.

Pros: close to the airport and the capital. Large selection of accommodation, cafes and restaurants.

Minuses: many tourists and local residents the beach is not very clean. You can find a quiet and clean place, but sometimes it's not easy.

On the island, we met people who were happy to spend their holidays only in this place. It's a little unclear to us. We would not spend our entire vacation in Negombo alone. A maximum of one day to relax and forward to the adventures of Sri Lanka.

Mount Lavinia

The next beach, located 12 km from Colombo and 45 km from the airport, in the city of the same name Mount Lavinia. This beach is also strategically suited for those who are going to travel around Sri Lanka or vice versa, relax before flying home. In our route around the island of Mount Lavnia, we made the starting and returning point, plus here we left the winter things at the hotel. Picked up before flying home.

The hotel is a house with separate rooms for tourists. It's inexpensive and conveniently located. The owner is sociable and will gladly answer all questions about Sri Lanka. It will even help you plan your itinerary. For those who choose not a place of rest, but a convenient point of arrival and departure, we can recommend this hotel. To the beach 2 minutes walk.

Mount Lavinia Beach is a wide and long stretch of sand. Umbrellas and sun loungers are available on site. Entry into the water is fast. The current here is changeable. You can encounter rip currents (they are also called rip currents). The thing is unpleasant and dangerous for beginners. Keep an eye on local vacationers - if you see that in some places they don’t swim, most likely there is a current there. Don't go there.

On the beach, we met both foreign tourists and many local residents with children who enthusiastically built multi-tiered living pyramids, climbing on each other's shoulders.

Mount Lavinia is a historic town built by the British. Of the preserved buildings, a hotel stands here. Mount Lavinia Hotel. It used to be the governor's house, built for the mistress of the governor, Lavinia. Hence the name of the resort itself.

What to watch: Dehively Zoo, Bolgoda Lake, where 45 species of fish live, about 160 species of migratory and waterfowl.

Pros: much less crowded than in Negombo

Minuses: rip currents, waves, many locals come on weekends and holidays.

As I wrote above, Mount Lavinia beach was chosen for strategic reasons: to leave winter things for the whole trip, to swim before a long route to the center of the island. I wouldn't stay here for a long time.

Friends, now we are in Telegram: our channel about Europe, our channel about Asia. Welcome)

Bentota

The resort is located 80 km from Colombo and offers tourists a gorgeous long beach with golden sand. The infrastructure is well developed. The beach is considered romantic, because. popular with lovers. Newlyweds often stop here and spend their honeymoon.

Bentona is located at the point where the Bentota Ganga flows into the Indian Ocean. Therefore, the resort is divided into two parts. A calm cape in the north is Paradise Beach, and the south beach where all the entertainment, cafes and restaurants are collected.

The resort has the largest water sports center and diving club. Here you can rent water skis, a catamaran, a scooter, a canoe, a surfboard.

  • Stylish 5-star hotel on the coast - Paradise Road The Villa Bentota
  • Cheaper hotel Ocean of Life Ayurvedic Resort
  • A budget option - Dimuthu Tour Inn

From attractions: sightseeing of the ruins of the Galapata Vihara complex, boat trip along the Bentota Ganga river. There is a turtle farm 3 km from the resort. It is worth going here - you will see how small funny turtles are bred.

Pros: wide long beach, quiet relaxing holiday, not crowded

Minuses: waves, a small selection of inexpensive housing, expensive holidays. Bentota is considered an expensive resort, so wealthy people prefer to visit it.

Hikkaduwa

This is our favorite beach. We chose a resort for a long time and decided to go to Hikkaduwa. And they didn't fail. Hikkaduwa combines an excellent beach strip, a large selection of housing, developed infrastructure and entertainment.

In the northern part of the city there is a railway and bus station; a market where you can buy fruits and seafood.

A large selection of umbrellas and sunbeds can be found on Narigama Beach, next to the hotel Rita Hotel and the Blue Moon restaurant. In some places, even large double trestle beds with a roof.

On the beach you can rent a surfboard and a small board for riding the waves. There are waves by the way, but you can swim with pleasure.

Fewer waves in the lagoon near the hotel Coral Sands.

In the evening, parties are held on the beaches. The environment is relaxed and friendly

On the coast there is a large selection of housing from 5 stars to guesthouses. At night you can hear the sound of the ocean, sometimes the noise of the party. For those who want to sleep in silence at night, we suggest looking for housing on the second line, behind the road. We lived in .

From entertainment: 50 meters from the coast there is a coral reef, a good place for snorkeling. You can also take a surfboard and catch a wave. Turtles also swim in the lagoon. You can try to feed them.

Pros: a large selection of housing, cafes, restaurants, shops, a large wide beach.

Minuses: not seen

Both independent travelers and package tourists have been seen on the beaches. We recommend this beach for long stays.

Unawatuna

An ideal place for holidays with children and for the elderly. Thanks to the lagoon, there are practically no waves here. Entry into the water is easy and pleasant.

The infrastructure is developed, there are cafes and restaurants along the entire coast. They also offer sunbeds and umbrellas. There are various shops and diving centers.

  • Cozy hotel by the sea La Veranda Di Serena
  • The hotel is cheaper, also on the coast - Rock Fort Hotel
  • Budget guesthouse — Sam's Guest House

From Unawatuna, it is easy to get to the city of Galle, where the listed fort is located. world heritage UNESCO.

From entertainment: you can go snorkeling, diving (there are several sunken ships and coral reefs), fishing from a boat.

Pros: ocean without waves, beautiful nature

Kogalla

A small resort is located 12 km from. Kogalla has a five-kilometer beach. There is a good choice of hotels from 5 stars to guesthouses.

Tourists with children, lovers, newlyweds, diving enthusiasts love to relax here (diving centers work on the coast)

The peculiarity of Kogalli is in the lake of the same name. It was chosen by birds, ecotourism fans and pilgrims who want to visit the ancient Buddhist sanctuaries, once built by hermits.

  • Resort hotel on the coast South Lake Resort
  • Cheaper hotel on the lake Madoldu eco resort
  • Budget hotel on the first line - Rainbow Surf Beach

Entertainment: those who are interested in the life and history of Sri Lanka can visit the museum folk art and culture.

Pros: quiet cozy resort

Minuses: waves

The beach next to Koglalla is Weligama. It is located in a picturesque bay with golden sand. Waves are 300-400 meters from the shore. There are surfers catching waves. The wave almost does not reach the beach.

Hotels are located along the entire coast. The choice is large, for every budget.

  • Nice 5 star hotel on the beach W15
  • Cheaper hotel on the coast, with a pool - We Escape
  • Budget guest house-villa — Diamond House

A feature of the resort is the world-famous fishermen who fish sitting on large thick sticks. They climb on their pole, sit on the crossbar-seat and fish. Caught fish can be bought. Fishermen are a kind of show for tourists. By the way, on the beach they offer to try fishing in such an exotic way for a small fee.

Another feature - not far from the beach is the island of Taprobane (Taprobane) with a small hotel.

From entertainment: walk around the city itself, on its streets you will meet colonial mansions, Buddhist dagobas, Catholic churches.

Sight cities - a figure of the God of Death (Leper King) carved from a three-meter block.

Recommended for stays of 3 or more days. Nearby is Mirissa beach. You can stop at Weligama for 1 night, explore it, then go to the neighboring Mirissa beach and explore it. Then choose from these two beaches already for a long time.

Mirissa

Beautiful beach in the lagoon with a great sunset. There are waves in the main lagoon. There are no waves in the third lagoon (the farthest one). Swimming is better there. You can even go snorkeling and snorkelling.

In the morning, a fish market opens in Mirissa. If you want to eat the freshest fish, get up early and go to the market.

From attractions: there is no entertainment as such in Mirissa, only the sea and the sun. There is a small rock with a viewing platform. The nearest attraction is the fort in Galle.

A plus: calm and quiet

Minus: few shops

Due to the small choice of entertainment and excursions, it is ideal here just to lie on the beach and swim. It seemed to us that there was nothing more to do on the beach for more than 6-7 days. Need to explore other beaches.

The beaches in Tangalle seem endless. A wide sandy spit stretches for several kilometers.

The resort does not have such a developed infrastructure as in Hikkaduwa. Mostly tourists come here for deserted beaches, of which there are several in Tangalle. There are two of them in the northern part: Medaketiya beach - the safest beach for swimming and Medilla. In the western part of the beaches Goyambokka (Goyambokka) and Pallikaduwa (Pallikaduwa).

There are waves in Tangella. Sometimes because of them it is generally impossible to go into the ocean. We recommend the beach next to the hotel Eva Lanka. There is a more or less calm bay.

From entertainment: visit the Mulgirigala caves, the national parks of Yala, Udawalawe, the Kalametiya nature reserve. Watch the turtles lay their eggs (April to September) at Rekawa West Beach. At the hotel, book an excursion for a walk to the whale migration site.

Pros: deserted beach, few people, close to Yala National Park and other nature reserves.

Minuses: waves.

Sri Lanka beaches without waves

The southeastern part of the island of Sri Lanka is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and is quite different from the European resorts known to us with a sea beach. We must remember that the waves will always be here, at any time of the year. AT winter period, from October to March, there are fewer waves.

Of the resorts that I have listed above, the waves are least on Unawatuna Beach (due to the natural bay), Mirissa (in a certain lagoon), Weligama (not throughout the entire beach area). There are waves in Hikkaduwa, but they are not terrible, except for stormy days, of which we met few. We just learned to communicate with them.
