The Department of the Russian Language is the successor of two departments - the Department of the Russian Language of the Initial Stage of Education and the Department of the Russian Language for Advanced Studies and Internships, which for a long period were key structural divisions, first of the preparatory faculty of Moscow State University (1954-1991), and then of the Center international education Moscow State University (1991-2013). First study programs

The first learning programs who laid the foundations and principles of the functional-semantic description of the Russian language. Here, for the first time, the principle of teaching the Russian language was implemented, taking into account the ethno-cultural and linguistic specificity of students. In 1965, the staff of the department prepared and published the first universal textbook of the Russian language for foreign students studying at the preparatory faculties of the USSR universities. The Department of the Russian Language was established in 1985 on the basis of the Russian Language Section, which has been part of the Department of Languages ​​since 1958. Since 1970, the head of the section, and then the first head of the department of the Russian language, was associate professor, candidate of philosophical sciences N. S. Vlasova, who skillfully combined pedagogical and organizational activities. Under her leadership and with her participation, the first curricula and teaching aids in the Russian language for foreign students of the conservatory were created.

From 1991 to 2012, the department was headed by Professor, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences E. Ya. Zagorskaya, who contributed to the continuity of traditions, the creation of a single creative team of teachers. Since 2012, the head of the department has been Associate Professor N. N. Samokhina, who has been working at the department since 1979.

The main task of the department is teaching Russian as a foreign language, teaching foreigners the language as a means of communication in the social, cultural, educational and professional spheres of communication. Foreign students from Australia, Great Britain, Vietnam, Greece, Spain, Italy, China, Korea, Mexico, Serbia, Turkey, South Africa, Japan and other countries study annually at the department. About 40 of them begin to study the Russian language for the first time at the preparatory department, opened in 1979. Students study Russian from the 1st to the 5th year and pass the state exam. His study continues in the assistant-internship. The department also trains interns arriving at short time. For bachelors, the course "Russian language and culture of speech" is conducted. Teachers of the department take entrance exams in Russian language and literature.

The scientific and methodological work of the teachers of the department is aimed at improving pedagogical process, the creation of a targeted and evidence-based educational literature taking into account the professional interests of students. One of priority areas in our scientific and methodological work is the improvement of the methodology for using a literary text in the lessons of the Russian language. Per last years teachers of the department have created manuals for advanced level students aimed at developing their reading skills and analysis of a literary text, at deepening their cultural competence. An important direction of the scientific and methodological work of the department is the creation of teaching aids based on the language of the specialty, since foreign students experience great language difficulties in the process of obtaining vocational education. N. N. Samokhina’s manual “Preparing to read textbooks and listen to lectures on the history of music” is repeatedly published. In 2012-2015, E. P. Orlova, N. N. Samokhina, E. V. Taktashov, T. V. Tatashova took part in international project to create a language course for EU students on Speak&Learn mobile devices (17 European languages).

To acquaint foreign students with the history and culture of Russia, the department annually organizes excursions for them to the Kremlin museums, memorial museums Russian writers (the A. S. Pushkin Museum on Prechistenka, the A. S. Pushkin Museum on the Arbat, the Chekhov Museum in Moscow and Melikhovo, the N. V. Gogol Museum, the M. A. Bulgakov Museum, the house-museum P. I. Employees of the department participate in the organization of linguistic olympiads, school electives, summer linguistic school, in writing linguistic literature for schoolchildren: collections of tasks, books for reading, textbooks and encyclopedias.

The Russian Language Department also organizes conferences and round tables, among which we can single out the annual international conference dedicated to the problems of language and communication.

There are several permanent working seminars at the department:
